Chapter 1
The ambient light in the grand ballroom of the St. Regis was blinding, reflected off crystal chandeliers and the polished surfaces of high-society pretense. To the rest of the world, Alexander Wade was the ruthless, unreachable thirty-two-year-old CEO of Wade International a man whose life was built on ironclad control, precise schedules, and unwavering discipline. Tonight was merely an obligation. His father, Richard Wade, expected his presence at the family's annual charity gala, a performance of high-society unity meant to satisfy the press and investors alike. A few paces behind him stood Daniel, his personal assistant and ever-watchful shadow, ensuring the evening moved forward with practiced perfection. From across the room, Victoria Wade, Alexander’s stepmother, glided through the crowd with her usual flawless grace, her biological son Ethan trailing a step behind her. Victoria gave Alexander the polite, measured smile she reserved for public appearances the shiny mask of a woman who had never truly accepted her husband’s firstborn. "You look like you're preparing to fire the entire board, brother," Ethan murmured as he paused beside Alexander, taking a sip from his glass. "It's a charity event. You're allowed to relax." Alexander didn't break his scan of the room. "Someone has to keep this family's reputation intact." Ethan offered a subtle smile, unbothered. "Right. Carry on, then." Accepting a flute of champagne from a passing waiter, Alexander took a polite sip to satisfy a group of approaching foreign dignitaries. He had no intention of staying long. But within twenty minutes, a sudden, heavy pressure settled behind his eyes. At first, he dismissed it as fatigue. Then his vision blurred. A suffocating warmth spread through his veins, dulling his sharp instincts and making his limbs feel impossibly heavy. He gripped the edge of a high-top table, his knuckles turning white as he fought to maintain his balance. Daniel was at his side instantly, his voice low and urgent. "Mr. Wade? You're pale. What's wrong?" "I'm fine," Alexander rasped, but his voice lacked its usual commanding authority. His heart was hammering wildly against his ribs. Daniel took one look at his dilated pupils and made a quiet, immediate decision. Bypassing the main exit and avoiding the cameras, Daniel steered Alexander through a private side door. Recognizing that the venue was compromised, Daniel bypassed the host hotel entirely, ushering his boss into a blacked-out sedan and directing the driver to a quieter, highly secure luxury hotel four blocks away. By the time they reached the suite, Alexander could barely stand. Daniel had already summoned Dr. Hayes, the Wade family’s trusted private physician. Within fifteen minutes, the doctor arrived, ran a swift blood test, and confirmed the reality. "He's been drugged with an advanced chemical sedative," Dr. Hayes whispered to Daniel near the foyer. "I've administered a neutralizing agent, but his system is in shock. He needs absolute rest. He will be conscious, but his perception and cognitive functions will remain heavily impaired for the next few hours." Daniel nodded, his jaw set. After settling Alexander onto the plush bed in the dim room, Daniel stepped out, locking the heavy door behind him. For security, he took the room directly adjacent to Alexander's, setting his laptop on the desk to begin investigating the night's security footage while staying close enough to respond to any call. Four floors below, in a dimly lit hotel bar completely disconnected from the Wade family's orbit, Caroline Bennet sat staring into an amber glass of scotch. At twenty-seven, Caroline had built a life she was proud of. She was sharp, independent, and fiercely capable, relying on her own hard work rather than her family's considerable wealth. She was a woman who valued control, elegance, and quiet strength. Tonight, however, that strength had been shattered into sharp, painful fragments. Her phone buzzed continuously on the marble bar a relentless barrage of texts and calls from Finn Forbes. Finn, the man she had loved for four years. The man she had envisioned her entire future with. Only two hours ago, she had arrived at Finn’s apartment early to surprise him, carrying a bottle of wine. She had opened the door with her key, expecting to find him reading or working. Instead, she had found him in his bedroom, wrapped around another woman. The betrayal itself had been a physical blow, stripping the air from her lungs. But the knife had twisted far deeper when the woman turned around, her eyes wide with initial panic before settling into a strange, defensive guilt. It was Emily. Her younger sister. Caroline hadn't screamed. She hadn't thrown a scene. Her upbringing and her own dignified nature wouldn't allow it. She had simply stood in the doorway, staring at the two people she trusted most in the world, before turning on her heel and walking out into the cold night air. Her mother, Eleanor, had always held a softer, warmer place in her heart for Emily a subtle, unspoken favoritism that Caroline had felt her entire life without ever understanding why. But this? How could Emily do this to her? How could Finn? Unaccustomed to drinking, the alcohol hit Caroline fast and hard, blurring the sharp edges of her grief into a dizzying fog. Exhausted, her eyes stinging with unshed tears, she finally left the bar, intending to retreat to the room she had booked for the night. The elevator ride up felt endless. When the doors opened, Caroline stepped out onto a carpeted hallway, her head spinning. Heartbroken and disoriented, she walked down the corridor, her vision swimming as she looked at the brass numbers. She stopped at a door, her trembling fingers fishing the key card from her clutch. She tapped it against the electronic lock. To her dull surprise, the mechanism clicked green. The latch had not been fully engaged by the room's previous occupant. Caroline pushed the heavy door open and slipped inside, letting it swing shut behind her, entirely unaware that she had walked down the wrong hallway, on the wrong floor, and into the wrong life. The room was vast, shrouded in near-total darkness save for the city lights filtering through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Caroline dropped her bag onto a chair, her chest heaving as the weight of the night’s betrayal crashed over her once more. A single tear escaped, tracing a warm path down her cheek. She walked blindly toward the bed, desperate only to sleep, to escape the agonizing memory of Finn and Emily together. "Who's there?" A low, commanding voice cut through the silence, laced with dangerous suspicion. Caroline froze. Through the shadows, she saw a large silhouette shifting on the bed. Alexander sat up, his brow furrowed heavily, his body fighting the heavy, lingering effects of the drug in his system. His pulse spiked with immediate alarm. Was this another attempt? An intruder sent to take advantage of his state? "Who sent you?" Alexander demanded, his voice thick, carrying an authoritative edge even through his impairment. He reached out, his large hand gripping her wrist tightly, pulling her closer to assess the threat. Caroline gasped, the sudden physical contact startling her intoxicated mind. "What... what are you talking about? This is my room..." "It isn't," he growled, searching her face. But as his eyes focused in the dim light, he didn't see a polished assassin or a schemer sent by his rivals. He saw a woman trembling, her wide eyes glittering with genuine pain and raw vulnerability. She smelled of sweet perfume and harsh spirits, her breathing ragged. "I just... I want it to stop," Caroline whispered, her defense mechanisms crumbling entirely under the weight of her exhaustion and alcohol. She didn't know who this broad-shouldered stranger was, but in her deeply confused, heartbroken state, the firm grip on her wrist felt less like a threat and more like the only anchor holding her upright in a world that had just collapsed. "Please... just let me forget..." Alexander was confused, he stared at her, who was this girl? His usual iron control was weakened by the drug still clouding his senses. Yet even through the haze, he could feel the tremor running through her. She wasn’t an intruder. She wasn’t playing a role. She was simply a woman who looked as though her entire world had fallen apart. Caroline moved toward him, the alcohol had softened the sharp edges of her usual composure, leaving her cheeks warm and her steps slightly unsteady. Alexander also pulled her closer to him, his breath on her face, his thumb brushing away the tear clinging to her cheek. Caroline’s breath caught, but she didn’t pull away. Then Caroline’s eyes lifted to his. Something in that look silenced whatever caution remained between them. Alexander leaned closer, slowly enough for her to move away. She didn’t. Their lips met. They were hesitant at first, but as the moment stretched, the unspoken yearning between them took over. Caroline closed her eyes, giving in to the warmth she’d been desperate to find all night. Alexander forgot the fog in his mind, forgot every reason to resist, knowing only her. “What are you doing to me” Alexander growled, looking into her innocent eyes, as the tiny bit of control left in him seemed to disappear. Caroline’s fingers curled lightly into his white shirt while Alexander’s arm settled around her, drawing her closer Eventually, exhaustion overcame the questions neither was willing to ask. Caroline remained tucked against him, his arm wrapped securely around her, while the room slowly fell silent. By dawn, they were still tangled in each other’s arms, completely unaware of how much that single night was about to change between them.
