Cavell first visited Costello on August 20. To allow her time to search the White City, they had agreed that Costello would disrupt the Peterson Hospital at 11:00 a.m. on August 24. A disruption large enough to necessitate the dispatch of staff members from the White City. Costello chose 11:00 a.m., because Dr. Harrison arrived at Costello’s room promptly at 10:50 a.m.
“And how is my favorite new patient today?” Harrison asked, as he entered Costello’s room, just as he did every other day. However, on the 24th, Harrison was shocked to find that Costello was no longer strapped to his bed. Costello had easily broken free from his restraints and was now standing by the window, probing the bars for weakness.
