Before the bomb threat, Dr. Harrison had informed Kelly of Costello’s desire to see him at the colony. Since the major’s home and the colony were at opposite ends of New York State, traveling there to visit Costello was no easy task – particularly when it only allowed visitors two days per week.
Kelly was to meet with Costello on Wednesday, August 25 at two o’clock. The major would begin his 220-mile journey across New York State on the afternoon of Tuesday, August 24. Kelly asked Moyer to ride “shotgun.”
On the way there, Kelly would attend a business meeting in Albany – one requested by “Legs” Diamond. Kelly’s intention was to “settle up” with Diamond.
