CHAPTER 1: THE BREAK-UP
DIEDRE. “We are over.” For a few seconds, I stared at George in confusion, unable to process the words that he is telling me. “I am sorry,” I said. “Can you repeat that? I am not sure whether I heard you correctly.” “You heard me well enough. We are over.” “Wh- where is this coming from? What are you saying?!” “Don't do that,” he says with the most disgusted look in his eyes. “Don't pretend you don't know why. I loved you! I trusted you. And you do this to us!” “Do what?! George, please! Talk to me. What is going on?” I begged as I try to grip his arm. “Enough!” He snaps as she pushes me away. “Enough with your lies. God! How could I be so stupid, so blind?” I stare at him in shock as despair and panic begins to cloud my mind. This is serious. He is serious. And I don't know why. I had come into the apartment, exhausted but excited, eager to tell him about my news, only to find his things packed. George is the only child and therefore heir to the Bates family fortune. Future CEO of the whole incorporation but you wouldn't know that with the way he behaves. So down to earth and sweet. Charming, gentle, honest. A rare man indeed. It came as a shock to me when I discovered where he actually came from and whatever insecurities I might have had because of it were calmed down by him. I had met him in my third year in college studying fashion design while he was studying business admin. There was no reason for the two of us to meet, much less click, but we did. A few months after our meeting, he asked me to be his girlfriend and I agreed. Third year, we both moved into this apartment with dreams of a future together. We were planning on getting married and starting a family once we both graduate this year, but that dream seems to be in jeopardy and I have no idea why! “George… please. Talk to me. Why are you doing this? What did I do?” “You are seriously asking me that? Seriously?!” “Just tell me! Please!” “Fine, you tell me. Where were you last night?” “Last night?” “Yeah, when you said you were going to study in a group. Where did you go?” “I did go to study! But the rest didn't come, and it was only me and Jake…” “Enough. Enough with your excuses. I don't want to hear it.” “George…” He pulls out his phone and, after a few taps, shoves it at me. “Do you still want to deny it? Is that what studying looks like?!” I stare in horror at the image on the phone. It is definitely me, topless and asleep on Jake's chest. “What….” I… I don't understand. This… “George,” I call weakly as I look up at him. “Please… this is not what it looks like.” “It looks like you had a different kind of study. Damn it Deidre! We were going to get married!” “I didn't sleep with him!” I cry out. “I don't know why this happened. I don't know how he got the pictures, but it's not me! I swear it!” “It is you! That is your birthmark on your shoulder! This was no Photoshop. It is the same earrings you were wearing last night, don't deny it.” “Please. Please… I didn't … I didn't do this. George!” I scream after him as he shoves past me with his luggage. “George, please! It's not true. I love you!” “Well I hate you. And I never want to see you again.” “No. No, you don't mean that. Please, my love. You know me,” I beg as I grab onto his leg. “You know me. You have known me since the first year. You know you are my first. Why? Why would I want to jeopardize what we have because of Jake. I don't even talk to him apart from the study group. Please, George. Believe me.” “I tried,” he says as he looks back at me. Hurt, betrayal and anger in his eyes as he stares at me. “I really did. Despite all the rumors I heard. Despite the unusual coincidences, I did hold out for you. But this, you can't explain this away, Deidre. You are a wh*re. And I am down being a cuckold.” Rumors? What rumors? And why am I just hearing about this now? “George…” “You can have the apartment,” he continues as he looks away from me. “I can't stay here anyway. The lease will be up by year's end, After that, you are on your own.” “I don't want the apartment!” I scream. “I want you. George, please. At least let me defend myself.” “Explain yourself? You really are going that far, huh? Very well then. Explain the hickory at the back of your neck.” “What?!” “You heard me. Or what? You want to say you didn't feel it there either? That it was just an insect bite?” “I…” I did feel that place was sour but I never…. I didn't even check to see what it was. I was in such a rush this morning, I… I didn't have the time. ‘Yeah, that is what I thought,” he snarls as he jerks his leg away from me. For a long minute I stare at the empty doorway in shock. This ain't happening. This can't be happening. It is the sound of a car door slamming that propels me to my feet. Rushing out of the apartment and down the flight of stairs, I came out just in time to see George backing out of the driveway in his car, his window riled all the way up. “George!” I scream as I chase after him. “George pl ease!” I crash to the floor in despair, his car fading fast from my view. “Please…” I sob. “Come back. I…I am carrying your baby.”
