The Beginning of the End
There was a saying Amina Bello had grown up hearing. "Misfortune never knocks once." As a child, she'd laugh whenever her grandmother said it. Surely, life couldn't be that cruel. Surely, bad things happened only to people in tragic movies or newspaper headlines. Now, standing beneath the gray skies of Accra with rain soaking through her black dress, she realized her grandmother had been right all along. Misfortune never came alone. It came carrying more misfortune. The cemetery had emptied almost an hour ago. The mourners who had cried loudest were the first to leave. The relatives who had promised endless support suddenly remembered urgent appointments. Even the neighbors who had crowded her father's house for three days disappeared one after another, leaving behind only plastic chairs, half-empty bottles of water, and silence. Only two people remained. Amina. And her sixteen-year-old brother, Idris. Idris stood a few steps away, his shoulders trembling despite his efforts to appear strong. At sixteen, he was already taller than their late father had been, yet grief had reduced him to the frightened little boy who used to hide behind Amina whenever thunderstorms rolled across the city. She reached for his hand. "It's time," she whispered. He didn't answer. Instead, he stared at the polished mahogany coffin slowly disappearing beneath fresh earth. "I still think he'll come back." His voice cracked. "They'll tell us it was all a mistake." Amina swallowed hard. She wanted to believe that too. She wanted someone to wake her from this nightmare. She wanted her father to call her phone again, asking why she hadn't eaten breakfast. She wanted to hear him complain about how she worked too hard. She wanted one more lecture. One more smile. One more chance to say goodbye. Instead... The grave diggers continued their work. The sound of soil hitting wood echoed through the cemetery like tiny explosions. Each thud buried another piece of her heart. Idris finally broke. He dropped to his knees, tears streaming freely down his face. "Dad..." Amina knelt beside him, wrapping both arms around his shaking shoulders. Neither of them noticed the expensive black SUV parked quietly near the cemetery gate. Its tinted windows concealed the person watching them. After several minutes, the vehicle drove away without a sound. — By the time they returned home, exhaustion had settled into every bone in Amina's body. The once lively house felt unfamiliar. Too quiet. Too empty. The scent of incense still lingered in the living room, mixing with fading perfume and untouched food left by sympathetic neighbors. Family photographs decorated the walls. There was one taken at the beach when Idris was eight. Another from Amina's university graduation just three months earlier. Her father had insisted on standing beside her in every picture, proudly telling anyone who would listen, "My daughter is going to do great things." The memory twisted painfully inside her chest. She looked away. "I'll make dinner," she said softly. "I'm not hungry," Idris replied. "You need to eat." "So do you." She managed the smallest smile. "We'll both eat." He nodded reluctantly before disappearing upstairs. The silence returned. Amina leaned against the kitchen counter and closed her eyes. For the first time in days... She allowed herself to cry. Not the quiet tears she'd hidden during the funeral. Not the polite sniffles offered to comfort relatives. These were different. They came from somewhere deeper. Raw. Hopeless. Lonely. Her knees gave way beneath her. She slid to the tiled floor, pressing a trembling hand against her mouth to stop herself from screaming. How was she supposed to do this? She was only twenty-two. She had graduated from university full of dreams and plans. She'd imagined finding a good job, helping her father retire early, and making sure Idris had every opportunity she never did. Now there was no father. No plan. Only responsibility. After several minutes, she wiped her tears and forced herself back onto her feet. Life didn't stop for grief. Bills still had to be paid. Groceries still had to be bought. School fees still had to be covered. Someone had to keep moving. That someone was her. — The next morning arrived far too quickly. Amina barely slept. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the coffin disappearing into the ground. She dressed simply in a cream blouse and black trousers before tying her hair into a neat bun. The dark circles beneath her eyes refused to disappear. As she prepared tea, someone knocked on the front door. Three sharp knocks. She frowned. Most visitors had stopped coming after the funeral. Opening the door, she found a middle-aged man wearing a perfectly pressed gray suit. He carried a leather briefcase. "Good morning." His smile was polite but distant. "Miss Amina Bello?" "Yes." "My name is Mr. Mensah." He produced an identification card before continuing. "I'm here regarding your late father's estate." Her heartbeat quickened. "Please... come in." He stepped inside, carefully removing droplets of rain from his polished shoes before taking a seat in the living room. "I wish this visit were under better circumstances." "So do I." He opened the briefcase. Several thick files appeared. One after another. Far too many. Amina frowned. "What is all this?" Mr. Mensah hesitated. Then he adjusted his glasses. "Your father never discussed his finances with you?" She slowly shook her head. "He always handled everything himself." "I'm afraid..." He paused, choosing his words carefully. "There are matters you need to know immediately." Something inside her tightened. "What matters?" The lawyer slid the first document across the coffee table. Bank statements. Loan agreements. Property documents. Letters stamped FINAL NOTICE. Her eyes scanned the pages. The numbers didn't make sense. No... They couldn't. "There must be a mistake." "I'm afraid there isn't." She looked up sharply. "My father owned this house." "He did." "He paid for it years ago." "He used it as collateral." Her breath caught. "What?" Mr. Mensah nodded solemnly. "He borrowed heavily to keep his company afloat over the past two years." Amina stared at him in disbelief. "No..." "I'm very sorry." "No." "He didn't tell anyone." "No!" Her voice echoed through the room. Idris rushed downstairs. "What happened?" She couldn't answer. Her hands had begun to shake. Mr. Mensah continued quietly, "The outstanding debt currently exceeds eight million cedis." The room spun. Eight... Million? She blinked repeatedly, certain she'd heard wrong. Her father? The careful man who balanced every expense? The man who taught her never to borrow what she couldn't repay? Eight million cedis? Her fingers tightened around the documents until the pages crumpled. "There has to be another way." The lawyer lowered his eyes. "The bank intends to repossess the house if repayment arrangements are not made." Idris looked from the lawyer to Amina. "What does that mean?" She couldn't bring herself to answer. Mr. Mensah did it for her. "It means..." He took a slow breath. "...you may lose this home." Silence settled over the room. Outside, thunder rumbled across the morning sky. Inside, Amina felt something even louder. Hope... Beginning to crack.
