Serenity's POV
My stomach turned as soon as I saw Kale at school. He was standing on the sidewalk outside of our school building. Luka and I walked close to each other until we had to separate to go to our separate class buildings and as soon as he walked his way, giving me a glance as he went, I started shaking with nerves. I approached Kale and tried to act normal.
“Hey, babe. How was your birthday?” He asked. He put his arm around my shoulders and kissed my cheek. Goosebumps formed on my skin and not in a loving or endearing way. My whole body shivered. There was a pit in my stomach and I knew Kale wasn't right for me. How would I break this off?
“It was good, thank you.” I said politely.
We walked to class holding hands. Everything in my body screamed to get away from him and my brain was going a mile a minute trying to form words to tell him I wanted to break up. My first three classes with him were uncomfortable. I tried hard to go along with the act but was struggling to keep up a happy face.
During lunch, Luka and I kept staring at each other. I sat next to Kale and stole glances at Luka each time Kale wasn't paying attention. Luka sat with the rest of our pack and I couldn't wait until I could join my friends and even my siblings again.
Finally, the day was over. I was at my locker and hoped to get my things before Kale saw me. I wasn't quick enough and felt shivers go down my spine as Kale placed his hand on the small of my back.
“I got you a gift, by the way.” Kale said while holding a small box out to me.
“You didn't have to, thank you.” I told him. I opened the box to reveal a small gold bracelet.
“You're welcome. Put it on.” He encouraged. He took it from the box and and slipped it easily over my hand.
I reached down to grab my bag and felt the bracelet tighten against my wrist. It wasn't painful, but tight enough I couldn't remove it or get something underneath it to cut it.
“What is this?” I shouted, I was mortified and afraid.
“I will always know where you are, now. Did no one tell you my mother is a powerful witch? This bracelet can only be removed by another witch, and they're hard to come by. You'll never get it off and as long as you're wearing it, I can always find you. If you ever think of leaving, if you ever think of running... it will be pointless. My mom saw it in a vision last night that you may be considering leaving me. I wanted to make sure you knew it would be impossible. You are mine forever, and will be the Luna of my pack. As soon as you turn eighteen, you will carry the heir to the Alpha throne for my pack.” Kale said. He was menacing.
I slammed my locker shut and ran out to the parking lot to find Luka. I was crying and lost, I couldn't see through my tears. I felt hands grab my shoulders from in front of me and I screamed.
“Serenity, it's Luka. What happened to you?” Luka said. I realized he was the one holding on to me and felt calmer. I leaned against his chest and felt his arms wrap around me while I cried. I realized we were in the school parking lot but couldn't find it in me to care.
How could Kale do this? How could he think I was his forever? He acted like he owned me. He acted like I shouldn't have a say. I was disgusted. I was terrified. What if I could truly never run from him?
Luka led me to the car and helped me get in once I had calmed down a little. I buckled and as soon as we were out of the school parking lot, Luka grabbed my hand. His thumb rubbed up and down the back of my hand.
“Tell me what happened.” He said.
“Kale. He gave me a bracelet for my birthday. I didn't think anything of it. He put it on my wrist for me and as soon as he did, I felt it tighten and clamp onto my wrist. I won't be able to take it off or cut it off. He told me his mom is a witch and had a vision of me leaving. She made the bracelet for him. He can track me anywhere I go with it. He said I can never leave or run.” I said. I became upset about this all over again and began crying.
“What a bastard. I'll kill him.” Luka said. When he realized his words were not comforting, he spoke again. “Our families know Erika, the high priestess in the council. No doubt she can remove the bracelet. We'll fix it. But you're not leaving my side until we do.”
“I'll have to tell them about Kale.” I murmured.
“You will, but at least that's safer than him finding you and hurting you.” He said. “Let's enjoy our night tonight, and we'll fake sick tomorrow to talk to them.”
“Good idea.” I said.
“I had my sister set up the cabin.” He said.
When we arrived home, we let our parents know we'd be going to hang out after wolf-classes. We got through them and then we took off to the woods as quickly as possible. Luka kept his arm around my waist for the walk there and opened the door for me as soon as we got there.
In the cabin, there was a futon couch, a TV, and a small kitchenette. It was set up as a guest home and never used, so the teenagers in the pack used it a lot. Melanie, Luka's sister, had set up a lot of comfortable pillows and blankets.
Luka covered me in blankets on the couch and made hot chocolate. Once we both had our mugs, he turned on the TV for us to watch one of our favorite shows. He pulled me close to him and I gladly cuddled into his side.
