Luka's pov
I dropped Serenity off at her house and once I was sure she was safe inside, I decided to take a walk around the perimeter of the pack lands to process everything that had happened. My mate was falling for me without even knowing she was my mate.
It hurt a little when she talked about finding our mates. I wanted to tell her she didn't need to worry about that, that her mate was here all along, but I couldn't. The rules were in place for a reason, and even if they weren't, I would never want her to be influenced by that knowledge and act in ways she wouldn't have normally just because I was her mate. When she felt the mate bond next year, that would be different.
I worried she would be upset I didn't tell her or that I always went along with it when she said we would someday find our mates. She knew the rules as well as anyone so I assumed she would understand why I had to keep it a secret.
As happy as I was things were going so well, I also was worried about the situation with Kale. I knew Serenity would need to break up with him and I knew it would be hard for her. I could protect her from him physically harming her, but there was only so much I could do about her emotional state through it all. I could support her, but I couldn't totally take away how hard it was going to be on her.
Finally, I decided to sneak into my house. I opened the door as quietly as I could, snuck inside, and then slowly and quietly closed the door. I silently removed my shoes and then tip-toed through the house praying nothing creaked.
“Luka.” I heard my dad's voice come from the dark living room. s**t. “Come sit.”
I did as he asked and walked to the living room to sit on the couch across from my dad. I prepared for a lecture. “I'm sorry for getting in so late, Dad.” I said.
“I'm not as concerned about the time as I am about what you were doing with it.” He said.
“I was with Serenity. Things got a little heated, but nothing out of control. I'm glad she wants to be with me.” I told him.
“You know the rules, Luka.”
“I didn't tell her that we're mates. I know the rules. I've just been spending time with her and probably subconsciously flirting a little more than usual because of the mate bond. I promise, I didn't tell her. I won't tell her.” I said.
“Good. Just be careful, Luka. She won't feel the mate bond until next year. Don't let yourself get too hurt by anything that might happen between now and then. Maybe she'll be interested in someone at school or see a boy from the pack. Keep your emotions in control.” He warned.
“Thanks, Dad.”
We called it a night and went to bed. The next morning, my mom had set out a basket of fresh muffins for us. I grabbed a few for Serenity and I on the way to school after getting ready, and headed out the door to Serenity's.
She met me at the door as usual and we walked to my car to head to school. I handed her a muffin after she got situated in her seat. She smiled shyly at me.
“Do you still feel okay about everything?” I asked her.
“Yes, I do. I really like you.” She said, turning her face away from me.
“You okay?” I asked.
“I'm nervous about Kale. I've told you I'm worried about everything that might happen if I break up with him, and now I feel like I have to. How can I even try to tolerate that relationship when the one we have is better? We've been friends for years and I already feel so content with you, and so happy. I know we're not dating or anything and that's not what I'm saying. You just make me feel so much better being around you than I ever do around Kale, and that says a lot already. I'm rambling, sorry.” She said, her cheeks turning bright red.
“It's okay, I think it's cute. And I do know what you mean, I'm not pressuring you into breaking up with him right away. Think about what you want to do.” I told her. It took everything in me, I wanted her to break up with him before and even more so now.
“Thanks, Luka. Can we hang out again tonight?”
“Absolutely. Let me know where.”
“What about that abandoned cabin?” She suggested.
“OK. After wolf classes tonight?” I asked.
“Yes.”
