Chapter Eighteen - Demon

Serenity's POV

I had been feeling better just in time to enjoy the last week or two of my pregnancy. I was uncomfortable in terms of my large belly and growing pains, but the nausea had subsided enough for me to be up and around the house again.

I was back to doing some school work. Luka had been allowed to stay home with me at least for the time being and I was grateful for the time he'd spent taking care of me.

I was doing school work when I heard Luka storming into the house.

“Stop! She didn't know. She doesn't need the stress.” Luka was yelling to someone I couldn't see yet. He came running into the house. “Serenity, go upstairs now.” He barked at me.

Before I could move, Julio, our main patrol general, came storming into the house. “Did you know?” He accused me. He approached me quickly and Luka growled at him, putting a hand on his chest. He had trained under my father and was the best in the pack at fighting. He had graduated the year before.

“What? Know what?” I asked nervously.

“Your f*****g boyfriend. Did you what he was?” Julio asked.

“Luka?” I asked.

“Kale.” Luka corrected me.

“A wolf?” I asked.

“My sister is dead because of him.” Julio snapped.

“What happened?” I asked.

Luka's father, the Alpha came in. “Sit down.” He roared. We all found the nearest seat, unable to disobey our Alpha. “Serenity, you need to hear this. I'm not sparing details. Luka, you know the rules, no protecting her.”

“What is going on?” I said.

“We found Julianna dead in the woods today. Dark magic.” Julio said.

“I'm so sorry. I know Kale's mother is a mage. I don't think he is, or didn't think he was.” I told them.

“I had some of Erica's crew out to inspect Julianna's body. Kale isn't only the son of mage. His mother is a demon. He's a hybrid between a wolf and a demon.” Alpha Kayne explained.

“We've rarely spoken of demons before in our lessons.” I said, wrapping my arms around my belly. “What are they?”

“Demons are somewhat similar to dark mages. They are inherently evil. They are humanoid and not like the movie demons. They are beautiful men and women who use dark magic for the worst possible causes. They possess large amounts of strong magic. There's no telling what their capabilities are. However, their bodies, without magic, are similar to that of a human. Without magic, they are incredibly vulnerable. Kale, though, is a hybrid. He has wolf abilities as well as being a demon. He's virtually indestructible for anyone to take on.” Alpha Kayne explained.

“I'm not really ever going to be safe, then, am I?” I whispered.

“I won't let anything happen to you.” Luka spoke up. He came to sit by me and placed a hand on my stomach protectively.

“You're no match for him, Luka. No wolf is. We don't know what his powers can do.” Kayne reminded him. “They won't attack us. Kale won't risk his pack. He can't protect everyone. They killed Julianna as a warning, to let us know what we – what you – are up against.”

“Erika could defeat him?” I asked.

“She could, if needed. There will be casualties, so we are all praying her warning is enough to keep anything that may be in his plans at bay. We will do everything to cooperate with her and protect you. You need to be careful about where you go, what you do, and who you trust. There's only one thing he wants.” Kayne said.

“Me.” I said. He nodded. “What about his mate? When he meets her?”

“We have some insider insight thanks to Erica. He has met his mate. The girl who has been trying to get Luka's attention, Emma. She's Kale's mate.” He said.

“And he still wants me?”

 “More than anything.”
