Chapter 1 Leaving Montgomery
# Chapter One: Leaving Montgomery
Ella could hardly believe it as she held the acceptance letter in her hands. The words 'Congratulations, you have been accepted' seemed to leap off the page, confirming her dreams of becoming a Critical Care Paramedic. Her heart raced with excitement as she rushed outside to the front porch, where Jacob sat in the old wooden chair, the evening sky painted in shades of pink and orange.
She climbed into his lap, snuggling into him, her hands trembling slightly as she held out the letter. "I got in, Jacob," she whispered, her voice full of wonder. "I got in. There's a last-minute opening, and I start in four days."
Jacob looked down at the letter and then up at her face, his eyes softening as he took in her excitement. "That's amazing, Ella," he said, wrapping his arms around her. "I knew you'd make it."
She bit her lip, looking up at him. "Come with me, Jacob. To Seattle. We could start over there. Together."
He hesitated, his gaze drifting out to the horizon, the fields that stretched out endlessly before them. He shook his head slowly. "What would I do there, Ella? I'm a ranch hand. I have nothing to offer the city." He sighed, the weight of his responsibilities pressing down on him. "My family needs me here too. The ranch... it's not just a job, it's everything to them. They rely on me, especially now. I can't just leave them." He turned back to her, his eyes full of emotion. "This land... it's all I know.""
Ella felt her heart sink, tears pricking at the corners of her eyes. She knew he was right, but it didn’t make it any easier.
Jacob took her hands in his, his eyes searching hers. "Ella, promise me you'll come back when you're done. Get your training, chase your dreams, but then come back here. We can make a life together, and you can help people right here, just like you always wanted."
She nodded, her heart heavy. "I’ll come back, Jacob. I promise."
Jacob smiled sadly, his hand brushing a strand of hair from her face. "I'll be here, Ella. Just promise me you won't forget me."
The next morning, Ella called into the ranch one last time before she left. Jacob was already waiting for her by the fence, his eyes filled with a mix of pride and sadness. Her father and mother sat in the SUV, waiting to take her to Seattle, and the weight of goodbye felt heavier than she ever imagined.
She climbed out of the truck and walked over to him, her heart pounding. They stood there for a moment, neither of them saying a word, until Jacob pulled her into his arms, holding her tight. "Don't forget me, Ella," he whispered, his voice breaking.
Tears streamed down her cheeks as she nodded against his shoulder. "I could never forget you, Jacob."
He pulled away, his hands lingering on her shoulders as he looked at her. "Go chase your dreams, El. I'll be here if you ever need to come back." He hesitated for a moment, then leaned in closer, his voice barely a whisper. "I love you, Ella."
With a heavy heart, she climbed into the back of the SUV, her parents offering her comforting smiles as they began the long drive down the dusty driveway. She looked out the back window, watching Jacob grow smaller and smaller until he was just a figure in the distance, standing by the fence.
Tears filled her eyes, and she wiped them away, trying to be brave. This was what she had always wanted, but leaving Jacob—leaving everything she knew—was harder than she had ever imagined.
Jacob stood by the pasture fence, gripping the rough wood tightly. His knuckles whitened with the pressure as he watched the taillights disappear, growing smaller until they faded entirely from view.
"She ain't comin' back," he whispered to himself, the words catching in his throat. He swallowed hard, feeling the bitter sting of reality. His heart felt heavy in his chest, a weight he couldn't shake. He’d known this day was coming, but that didn’t make it any easier.
Back at the ranch, Jacob stared at the empty road long after Ella was gone, the cool breeze rustling through the tall grass around him. He took a deep breath, the familiar scent of earth and hay filling his lungs. He’d always known she was meant for something bigger, something he couldn’t give her. It was why he hadn’t asked her to stay—because he loved her too much to hold her back.
He leaned against the fence, feeling the wood press into his back, and closed his eyes. "I hope you find what you’re lookin’ for, Ella," he whispered into the evening air. "But if you ever need to slow down… you know where to find me."
In that moment, Jacob felt both heartbreak and hope—the hope that maybe one day, when she had chased her dreams and the world wasn't so big anymore, she might find her way back to him, back to Montgomery, even if just for a little while.
