Chapter 1: A stranger
Blue and pink spotlights shone down on Vera as she clung to the pole on the glowing stage. She waited for the exact moment in time with the music to leap up and twist her glittered legs around seductively. Holding herself up by her thighs, she let go and dramatically arched backwards. Using her core to straighten up again, she held onto the pole and swung her leg out in a full circle. The sea of hungry faces turned into a blur. A Pitbull song blared on the big speakers, but she could still hear the audiences screams for more. Pausing for a beat to catch her bearings, Vera slowed her spin and winded down the pole till she landed on her heels. Someone's gaze caught her eye. He was a classicly tall, dark, and handsome man who was watching her intensely.
Sinking her whole body down to the floor, she crawled over like a cat to where he was sitting smugly. He c****d his head to one side. She held his gaze for a minute, enjoying his mysterious aura. The music changed abruptly, breaking their little staring contest. In one smooth motion, Vera was up on her heels again. She brushed off the stranger with a flick of her firey red hair. Climbing back on the pole, she whirled around, letting the spin carry her as she pretended to walk on air.
"Five more minutes." She told herself, weariness from the long day setting in. At last, Vera got the cue from Giles to switch. More dancers ran onto the stage, allowing Vera to slip away. Heading backstage, Vera bumped into Alissa, another dancer. They collided in a frenzy of glitter.
"Whatch where you are going!" Alissa hissed. Vera rolled her eyes and tried to squeeze past. "Just because Giles chose you to open doesn't mean you're his favourite Vera."
"I don't give a s**t who Giles' favourite is." Vera retorted.
"Sure you don't."
"Whatever. I'm kind of in a hurry."
"Right. Because you have classes at Uni, because you are so much better than everyone." Alissa said, her voice dripping in bitterness. Vera shoved past her without another word.
