Prologue
... They say every war starts with a single act. Sometimes it’s a bullet. Sometimes it’s a lie. For my family, it began with a promise made long before I was born—a promise sealed in blood, broken in greed, and carried like a curse through generations. I grew up inside the walls my father built, walls meant to keep danger out. But the truth? Those walls weren’t just protection. They were a cage. And the danger wasn’t out there—it was already here, waiting for the right night to show its face. I was fourteen, the first time I learned that safety could vanish in a breath. It was supposed to be a simple afternoon—my best friend Jules and I walking back from the café on Montero Street, laughing about something stupid. The sun was warm, the air smelled of sea salt and fresh bread, and I was certain nothing bad could touch us in daylight. Then the black car pulled up. Two men stepped out. No masks, no hesitation. One grabbed Jules by the arm, shoving her aside, while the other wrapped his hand around my wrist so hard I thought my bones would snap. He said my name. My full name. And in that moment, I knew this wasn’t random. Why was I targetted? Was it cause of my family's fame Was it an enemy, using me as the weak point. They didn’t get far. My father’s men appeared like shadows from nowhere, guns drawn, voices sharp. One of the men ran. The other was forced to his knees on the pavement, his grip on me ripped away. I can still remember the look in his eyes—not fear, but certainty, like he knew he’d be back. I was rushed into a car, my father’s arm around my shoulders. His shirt smelled like cologne and gunpowder. He didn’t say much—just one sentence that became my new reality. “From now on, you don’t go anywhere without protection. Not ever.” And I didn’t. Three years still those statements I followed, those walls and guards are all I’ve ever known, not going anywhere without protection. But deep down, I’ve never forgotten the way the world felt in that moment—wide open and dangerous, like one wrong step could erase me.
