Sage's POV
*Beep*Beep*Beep* Slam! My hand hit my alarm clock as fast as I could. I sat up in my bed and stared at the baby blue walls that surrounded me. My parents let me pick the color when I was 10 and helped me paint it. I was going to change it last year in hopes I could give myself a fresh start. Then Dad died. I haven't changed anything in the house since then. it's been three months, and I haven't even emptied out the fridge. I refuse to open it. I refuse to open anything. I refuse to change it all.
I pulled back my heavy blanket and put my feet on the cold, wooden floors. I walked to my bathroom and stared in the mirror. My curly, black hair fell from my bun and across my face. My bright green eyes stared back as I brushed my teeth. I couldn't help but stare at my necklace. The delicate chain held a small pendant made of smoky quartz. My dad gave it to me the night before my 16th birthday. He told me to always wear it, because it would give me protection. He never said what it protected me from, but he was determined I never took it off. He saw me try to take it off one time and yelled at me.
"Stop! Don't you ever, I mean ever, take the necklace off. It is to protect you!" he shouted as he gripped my wrist tightly.
"Protect me from what?" I cried as I tried to pull away. He let go of my wrist and composed himself. He then said two words that still send shivers up my spine, "Certain Death." I still do not know what he meant by it, but he was very serious. Now I wear it mostly as a memory of my mom and dad, but I also fear what would happen if I took it off.
Snapping back from the memories that flooded my mind, I finished brushing my teeth and took a shower. I put on my regular school uniform. Plaid skirt, modest shirt, knee high white sock, blazer, and loafers. We had a strict dress code, and jewelry of all kinds is not allowed. I always wear a turtle neck or high collared shirt that I can tuck my necklace into. Some teachers have seen it, but they give me a pass. Sometimes having others feel sorry for you is beneficial.
I grabbed my large brown overcoat, school bag, and keys. As I locked my front door, I heard a crow scream loudly. I jumped at the sound and looked around to find the awful thing. It was perched on my mailbox and was looking at me. It was like it was staring into my soul. I got into my car and drove to school. I stopped for a quick coffee and arrived at school. Despite paying for a first row spot, I always had to park in the back of the lot. "Popular privilege" is what Janie would always say. Popular people get to be at the front. Losers are in the back. I lost my privilege when I punched Janie so hard in the face that her daddy had to buy her a new nose.
I started the long walk to the entrance of the school. Near the steps, Janie and her minions sat with the football team. As Janie saw me, she grabbed Daniel and shoved her tongue down his throat. I saw his hand raise up her skirt and grab her ass. Of course, the slut isn't wearing underwear. As I walked past the group, I heard some of the cheerleaders talking about our new chemistry teacher. Our last chemistry teacher got fired for showing up drunk. He almost set the chemistry lab on fire which promptly led to him being let go. I knew we would get a new chemistry professor, because the letters from the principal told us. " I am pleased to let you know that Mr. Sebastian Wilson has been hired to teach your precious angels. He will be in charge of teaching regular chemistry as well as AP chemistry." Blah... Blah.... Blah..... The letter was more to ease the minds of parents who were worried about their kids education. Mine was still addressed to my father.
I went into the school and stopped by the guidance counselor's office to get my schedule. Most of my classes were honors and AP classes. I wanted to keep myself busy with my academics so that I didn't have to focus on other things. I even signed up for AP ceramics. Have I have taken a ceramics class?:No, but I am trying new things. I am trying anything. Anything to keep my mind busy.
I walked to my locker and shifted out my things. Suddenly I heard someone clear their throat from behind my locker door. I closed it to see Daniel.
"Hey, that skirt looks so great on you as always. It really bounces nicely when you walk," he said with a creepy, charming smile.
"What do you want? Shouldn't you be hammering Janie in your car about now or is she busy blowing the principal so that he would change her grades?" I said with disgust.
"She's busy right now. I could take you out to my car if you'd like," he said with a wink. My stomach turned sour as he proposed the idea of us getting together.
"I'd rather go to a family reunion. Seriously, what do you want?" I couldn't stand to be speaking to him. After two years of being together, he decided to film himself f*****g Janie and post it everywhere. After two years of being together, he decided I wasn't enough. After two years of being together, I became worthless. He cleared his throat and turned on his "serious" voice.
"I just wanted to see your class schedule, so I could warn you if you had classes with any of them," he said with a solum look. I handed him my schedule, and he compared it to his. He had notes written in pink pen next to his schedule. I'm assuming Janie put her schedule or notes on there. "Luckily, most of your classes don't match ours. You really signed up for too many AP classes. You can't overwork yourself. it's not good for you," he said with concerns.
"You lost every right to worry about me when you f****d my best friend," I snapped back. He shook his head and looked back at our schedules.
"Unfortunately, you do have chemistry with Janie and her minions," he said with strain in his voice. How the f**k did she get in AP chemistry? She practically failed normal chemistry.
"How is she in AP chemistry? She dumber than you. I'm pretty sure her and her minions share one brain cell."
"She convinced Mr. Dawson to change her grade to an A and put her in AP chemistry. That was before he got fired." This is great. Now I have to endure Janie and her minions in chemistry again. Mr. Dawson was always showing Janie and her friends special attention. Janie was gorgeous, head cheerleader, rich, and a slut. If her body couldn't get her what she wanted, her dad and his checkbook definitely could.
"Well, thanks for the heads up. I'm pretty sure I see your walking fleshlight coming this way." He turned to find Janie, and I slipped away. She wasn't anywhere nearby, but I knew that would distract him long enough for me to slip away. She would kill me if she saw us talking. I went to my first class which was AP literature, then AP history, then AP calculus, AP ceramics, AP chemistry, and then weight training. As long as I can remain invisible, I should be able to make it. I should be able to make it.
