Mate

DALLAS POV Total silence. As I stared at her, I noticed that her bright blue eyes seemed to sparkle slightly, and then I knew the silence was because she was talking to her wolf. Her right eye twitched and I knew I had to say something before she exposed herself. “I asked if you were okay since you seemed to be sighing a fair amount” I repeated, “I’m fine” she tsked, turning her head away from me toward the teacher. “She’s cute” “Riley” “I’m just saying” Riley pouted, flopping himself down in his typical sulking pose. As the teacher started the class, her head leaned slightly in my direction and I heard her tsk again. “Is she tsking at me?” “I think so, does she not like us?” “Can't be, she doesn’t even know us” I internally shook my head. “I’m Bentley, by the way,” I said, hoping that she would look at me and maybe even smile. “Good to know” she replied, “Not even a glance” Riley sighed, disappointment evident in his tone. I frowned for only a second, I wonder why he would be disappointed. “What’s your name?” I tried again. She sighed, finally turning to face me, a glare present on her face. “That’s on a need-to-know basis, and you don’t need to know”. She scowled. The boldness and the bluntness startled me. I’d never met anyone before who dared to speak to me that way, most people were intimidated by either my aura or my looks, and yet, this she-wolf didn't care about any of that. The realization made me chuckle and made Riley’s ears perk up, “She’s special” he grinned, “Yes, whoever her mate is, is one lucky guy, but he will definitely have a challenge on his hands as well” I laughed internally. I decided to let her be for the remainder of the class, but every so often my eyes would travel to her, to see what she was doing and every time they did, she was doing the same thing, ignoring me and taking notes. As the bell rang signaling the end of class, I cleared my throat, “One last time”. “So, I’ll be seeing you around then?” I said, “One smile” Riley pleaded. "It’s a school, I’d say you probably will,” she said, smirking slightly. I laughed, “so cute!”, pushing my glasses further up my nose, “Well then, I’ll see you later,” I said. Clearly, she wasn’t expecting that response, she grabbed her backpack, and tossed her hair over one shoulder, “Whatever” she said back to me as she made a beeline for the door, and just like that, she was gone, but definitely not forgotten. “I love Human History” “Me too!” … Finally, the bell rang signaling the end of fourth period and the end of my hell. Luckily, Dale was in this class, so at least I had someone to suffer alongside me. “Why the hell do we have to take Art?” he whined as we made our way to the cafeteria. I chuckled, “I know right, what were you even trying to draw?” “I was trying to draw the meadow from back home” he pouted at me, clearly unimpressed that I couldn’t recognize it. “Ohhhh!” I said before a giant smile broke out on my face, “that was a river, not a snake.” He growled before shoving me into a locker as we passed it, “You’re such a jerk sometimes” he said. “I’m joking, I’m joking, you could clearly tell it wasn’t a snake, it didn’t have a forked tongue,” I said, wrapping my arm around his neck, “Come on, Aiden’s probably wondering where we are.” As we walked into the cafeteria, Dale went stiff next to me, “What’s up?” I questioned him. “Alpha, we have a big problem” he mindlinked me. “What’s so bad that you have to mindlink me, is there danger?” I said, frowning at him as we made our way over to Aiden. “Yes! I can sense my mate is here” he stared at me, worry evident in his features. I stared back at him, my mouth wide open. “Hey what took you guys so long?” Aiden whined, clearly having been here for a while. As we all sat down to eat, I opened up the mindlink to include all of us. “What the?” Aiden said, clearly surprised by the sudden intrusion. “Dale, tell Aiden what you’ve just told me.” “Aiden, I can sense that my mate is in this room,” Dale said, grabbing a fry off his plate and popping it into his mouth. “Really!? that’s so cool” sudden realization dawned on him, “ Oh wait, no! That’s not cool” he said, correcting his statement. I rolled my eyes at Aiden, “do you know which one it is?” I asked, swiping a nugget from under Aiden’s nose. “Yeah, she’s sitting at the table in the far left corner, closest to the drink machine, she’s the one with dark brown hair,” he said, as he indicated slightly with a tip of his head in the same direction. As I glanced over, I saw the same girl from my Human History class, She has dark hair. “But it won’t be her” Riley mumbled, his eyes closed. “You’re not even looking, but anyway, how do you know?” “It’s just not her, okay?” He replied, giving me an attitude. “The one with the long hair?” I replied to Dale. “Nuh, it’s the cutie with the short hairstyle” he sighed back, clearly drooling over her, even from this distance. “Okay”, I said aloud, “Keep yourself in check, she won’t know, so don’t let her find out, okay?” I said, staring him down. He nodded before looking back in her direction, “I won’t screw it up” he said, determination in his voice as his eyes made contact with first mine, then Aiden’s. “Good”, “You can ask for her forgiveness when this is all over”, Aiden added, and he slapped Dale on the back. We continued to eat in silence before I mindlinked Dale, “By the way, congratulations on finding your mate”, I said grinning at him. “Thanks, Alpha”. He beamed back at me.
