Chapter nine
Scarlett's pov
"Thank you for everything Freddy, I owe you one." I smiled softly at the old man beside me who wore an unreadable expression on his face.
"Just be careful Scarlett," he muttered.
"I would hate to see you consumed by your own rage." He added and I sighed as I turned fully to face him.
"I'll be fine, I promise and I'll make sure to come and visit," I assured him and he reluctantly smiled at me. I turned back to stare at the nightshade border and I let out a deep breath, I would definitely have my work cut out for me.
"Be careful Elara," I heard Freddy's voice call out to me and my eyes bulged at the use of my real name but as I turned he was nowhere in sight.
I looked around me but couldn't find him anywhere...he seemed to have vanished into thin air. An eerie chill ran through me for a moment but I shrugged it off and headed towards the pack gates. Whoever Freddy really was...or what he was, he was a friend and an ally so I had nothing to fear because if he really wanted to hurt me, he would have.
"What do you think you are doing?" One of the border officers asked as I approached.
"I never should have left, I need to speak to Nora please." I willed tears to well up in my eyes and I wrapped my arms around myself as I tried to appear helpless and defenceless.
"She's unavailable to speak to the likes of you rogue, you'll have to go back to wherever you sprouted from." The guard teased me and the other guards laughed as though they shared some joke.
"I really need to see her please, I need her help." I continued but their eyes remained hardened.
"We have strict instructions not to let you anywhere near this pack, you could either leave without causing any trouble or we could spread your guts out across these floors, it's your choice." The man told me.
"Or better yet, we could have some fun with her." Another suggested and I could feel their disgusting stares raking over me.
"I want to speak to Nora and I won't leave until I do, I can't leave...I need her help." I pleaded as I broke into sobs, hoping to tug on at least one of their strings of empathy but I forgot I was no longer Elara, their precious luna, I was nothing but a filthy rogue in their sight.
"This is the last warning I'll give you little lady," the guard glared at me as he took a step towards me but I stood my ground. If I ever hoped to find who was behind my- Elara's death, I had to find a way into this pack...I never should have left in the first place.
"I've already alerted the alpha and he's on his way." One of the guards announced and my heart beat loudly in my chest. Everything in me urged me to flee and get out of there as fast as I could but my feet remained firmly rooted to the floor.
It was as though a part of me wanted to stay, just to see him...to gaze upon him just once. As the unknown longing sprouted within me, traitorous memories of when I was being burnt at the stake surfaced within my mind and my longing iced over.
What was wrong with me? How could I be thinking about Silas as though that day hadn't happened? Anger bubbled within me at the memories and I felt as though my wounds had been torn open and as if on cue, I felt him before I saw him.
"What's going on here?" Silas' voice boomed loudly and ripples of awareness swept through me as I slowly turned to face him and my eyes met with familiar brown ones.
Silas stared at me so intently that I was almost scared he could see right through me. Seeing him, in the flesh and blood sent so much through me. It was as though my thoughts did him no justice at all or maybe it was merely seeing him through a new lens.
"Who are you?" He asked as his eyes finally settled on mine.
"I-i-" I stuttered as I tried to gain my bearings and Silas quirked an unimpressed brow at me.
"Not so brave now eh?" One of the guards teased but I ignored him.
"I need to speak to Nora, please," I begged when I was finally able to get my voice.
"What business do you have with her?" He asked calmly although his eyes remained on me with cool regard...it reminded me of the way he looked at me while I was being burnt at that stake and it made that rage shimmering within me rise and it only solidified my decision to make him and everyone else pay.
"I need her help," I replied as I tried my best to act helpless.
"She is not-" he began just as a voice behind him interrupted him.
"Where did you run off to? I was so worried," Nora walked past Silas and towards me.
"Nora, what are you doing here? I told you to wait in the pack house," Silas growled but Nora ignored him as she hugged me as though we had been best friends for the longest time. If I had any hope of getting into this pack Nora would be my only access code and for now, I would milk that.
"I'm sorry, I was just so scared. I don't know why I ran, I just...I thought you were going to harm me." I whispered as tears glistened in my eyes.
"Silas-" Nora began but her eyes glazed over and I could tell she was speaking to Silas through their mindlink.
I stood awkwardly between them for several moments before finally, Silas huffed.
"Fine," He grunted before he turned on his heels and stalked away.
I turned to Nora in confusion but she was too busy staring after him triumphantly.
