Chapter 00019

Chapter 19 Silas' pov I tossed and turned in my bed, willing sleep to claim me, but I knew that, just like every other night, it would be futile. Jax, my wolf, whined within me and I wondered what his problem was. 'Mate, I want our mate." He called out to me and I sighed. He had been like this ever since Elara died and I was unsure how to make him understand that we didn't have a mate anymore. Our mate betrayed the pack and now she was gone forever, no matter how many times I tried to make Jax understand that he just remained hardheaded and unwilling to accept it. 'Go to mate," He called out within me again but I ignored him as I groaned and rose from the bed. I might as well go on a run, the only thing that seemed to calm Jax these days as he was becoming more and more insistent. I wore a loose pair of shorts and made my way out of the pack house, enjoying the cool breeze which immediately hit my face as I closed the door behind me. The moon illuminated my path and I started with a slow walk and then broke out into a light jog. Jax clawed within me, begging for control and I let him, shifting mid-jog into my magnificent brown wolf. Jax howled in delight as he took over and ran freely across the pack grounds. I let the breeze caressing my face strip me, if only temporarily, of my worries and I lost track of time. After a while, when Jax was somewhat satiated and back to himself, he led us back towards the pack house and abruptly he stopped in his tracks and looked up, right at the rogue's window. He stared at the window for a long time but there was no one there and he let out a loud howl, as if trying to draw her out, and no matter how I nudged him away, he remained firmly rooted to his spot. He howled again and I fought for control until I finally regained it and pushed him back. Just as I was about to turn away, I noticed the curtain stir and I paused. The rogue's face slowly came into view as she shifted the curtains and looked down. My eyes met with sparkling blue ones and her eyes bulged when she noticed me and she quickly hid behind her curtains. I remained there for a moment, staring at the window as though I was expecting her to emerge again and after a while, I forced myself away and made my way to the pack house. I changed and wore my loose shorts before I made my way into the pack house. On my way to my room, I heard movement coming from the kitchen and I changed course towards the sound. For a brief moment, I thought it would be the rogue but instead Nora turned to me with a mouth full of cookies. "What do you think you are doing?" I quirked an unimpressed brow at her as she stared at me like a deer caught in headlights. I waited patiently for her to finish chewing and swallowing before she cleared her throat. "I couldn't sleep so I decided to get a little snack," she explained as she took a sip of her milk and I remained silent as I leaned against the doorframe. "What are you doing awake by this time?" She asked as she set up another plate of cookies and milk beside her and gestured for me to take a seat beside her. "I needed to clear my head," I explained as I took my seat and took a bite out of one of the cookies. "What's bothering you?" Nora asked after a moment. "It doesn't matter," I muttered and Nora sighed no doubt knowing she wouldn't get anything out of me if I wasn't ready to tell her. "I was thinking of going on a picnic with Scarlett tomorrow, would you like to join us?" Nora changed the topic and it was my turn to let out a sigh. "Can I ask why you trust this rogue so much?" I inquired and Nora shrugged. "I can't explain it Silas, there's just something about her." She muttered as though she couldn't explain it herself. "And don't try to convince me otherwise," she added before I could speak and I raised my hands in surrender. "I already know nothing I tell you will change your mind about her. I might as well let you do as you please as long as you keep her out of my way and she doesn't sniff around my pack." I informed Nora. "But she still has to leave though, she can't be a part of this pack." I quickly added as Nora's lips froze, mid-smile. "Silas-" she began but I placed a hand on her shoulder, cutting her off. "This is my compromise, Nora," I told her as I rose from the chair and gulped the milk from the glass. "Just be careful with this rogue and keep an eye on her, I don't want you to get hurt and more importantly, I don't want our pack to get hurt," I told her softly before I turned and walked away, ignoring Jax's whining as I headed to my room and wondered what was so special about this particular rogue.
