Lilly is out cold, she’s lying vertical over the king-sized bed, her arms stretched out above her head and her feet still planted on the floor. Bruno stares at her tempted to move her in a more comfortable position and then to crawl up beside her and just hold her and hope it will ease a bit of her pain. Tomorrow is their second anniversary; he can’t believe it is already two years now. The first time he saw her... she just took his breath away. Lilly was one of the waitresses at one of the many fund-raising events his company liked to host. She was bringing campaign on a silver round tray, she was wheel ding it between the people with such grace. You could see she has done it before, greeting each person with the most beautiful smile he has ever seen. Her waitress outfit has never looked so sexy on anyone before. A white button up shirt with a black pencil skirt hugging her small hips, shimmer stockings and back stilettos. He smiles thinking he was wondering how she could walk in those all day long.
Lilly has been so cold towards him; he decides to just sit in the armchair next to the bed and stare at her. She looks so peaceful now. Her long blond hair and fair completion is such a delight to him. I am such a lucky guy to have her in my life, he thinks to himself. He takes out a little box he has been carrying with him for a couple of days now. He opens it and stares at it, a beautiful Victorian ring, big blue oval sapphire decorated with seven diamonds all around. He was going to take her to one of the posh restaurants and ask her to marry him. He got a grand promotion at his architect job and they will be moving into a beautiful four-bedroom house in the grand part of Gauteng. Lilly doesn’t know any of this, it was going to be his surprise gift to her. He closes the box and puts it back in his pocket as his blackberry buzzes. He swiftly moves out the room not to disturb Lilly.
He recognizes the number mediately and a cold shiver runs down his spine. Bruno Smith speaking. Good afternoon Mr. Smith I am sorry to bother you, I am Hendrix van Wyk, head of security at Green’s Psychiatric hospital here in Johannesburg, it is of utmost importance we meet as soon as possible, today if possible, he adds. Has something happened to my brother he asks annoyed? Sir I wish not to disgust this over the phone can you see me, now please? This is not an appropriate time for me I just buried my baby boy today and my girlfriend really needs me. Hendrix pauses on the phone for a few seconds, I am sorry for your loss, he says was it an accident? She fell down the stairs not that it’s any of your f*****g concern! Bruno now very irritated with this security guy. Sir, um, Hendrix falls over his words. Your brother has escaped, and it has now become clear to us he has gotten over the great wall somehow. WHAT! I PAY YOU GUYS AN UP SEEN AMOUNT OF MONEY TO KEEP THE WORLD SAFE FROM HIM!
We are deeply sorry; we are still trying to figure out how this could have happened. I’ll be there in an hour and I want answers! Bruno drops the phone now filled with anger.
How is this even possible! He leaves a note to Lilly and puts it on the nightstand. Bruno locks up the house puts on the security alarm and makes way to his car. He puts his phone on the handless speaker and phones his old friend Alex. Bruno, how are you? Not so good Alex, Ben has escaped from the Psychiatric hospital I’m on my way to get answers, please can you go guard my house? Lilly is sleeping and I... please Alex? Of course, I’ll be there in 5minutes. Alex... yes Bruno? Please don’t let her notice you. Don’t worry. They both hang up.
Bruno has an identical twin brother; he is a malicious anger engrained maniac. Ben has been in the Psychiatric hospital for about ten years now after he viscously stabbed their parents and then let them bleed out on the floor. Mom was stabbed twenty-one times and dad twenty-nine. The events of that night unfolding in his mind, something he has been trying to forget for ten years. Alex is the only one that knows about Ben, and Bruno would like to keep it that way. Bruno arrives at the Psychiatric hospital and pules up to the huge black gates. On the gate in big black metal letters its written GREEN’S PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL. Bruno presses the button, which is arm length from his window, Bruno Smith to see Hendrix van Wyk. Just hold a moment a woman’s voice politely answers instantly from the speaker.
Bruno stares at the great wall it must be about 6 meters high with razor sharp spikes on top. Two meters from the wall is about a 10-meter-high voltage electric fence with more razor-sharp blades on the top. How the f**k did he get over this! The gate opens and Bruno drives to the reception area. At the front door, the security opens the door for him. Inside he must empty his pockets and walk through the metal detector. As he collects his phone, wallet, car keys and Lilly s engagement ring, Hendrix greets him. Good day Mr. Smith thank you for coming on such short notice. Hendrix is a short stubby man, well groomed.
Bruno just nods very annoyed. This way please sir, Hendrix leads the way to his office. Can I get you something to drink? No thank you Bruno says dryly.
OK... Hendrix sighs loudly, let’s start, about 15minutes before you arrived, we discovered the body from one of our security guys severely decompressed. Bruno c***s his head to one side. How long has Ben been missing? About two weeks. WHAT! AND YOU ONLY INFORM ME NOW?
The great wall is covered by surveillance cameras from every angle, so we assumed he was just hiding somewhere. Surely you should have been looking why your staff didn’t rock up for work as usual? Mr Clark has resigned and was working his last shift that day. Bruno’s phone buzzes in his pocket he checks it and sees its Alex.
Excuse me I need to take this. Of course, Mr. Smith. Bruno there is a shadow lurking around the house. I have informed the police; I am going to go check it out.
No! Bruno shouts. He is dangerous and has already killed one person to my knowledge. The alarm is on at home, Lilly is safe if she stays inside. I am on my way! And Alex if he comes near you, shoot to kill. I understand, they both drop the phone. Bruno looks at Hendrix with a death stare. If anything happens to my girlfriend you will have hell to pay, Bruno rushes out the room, trough the metal detector, setting of its alarm because he didn’t empty his pockets. Open the f*****g door he shouts at the security guy, who looks at him wide eyed and then to Hendrix who nods in consent, he punches in the code and opens the glass door. Bruno races to his car and spins out of the parking area on the way to the big gate that is already slowly opening. His heart is pounding with fear, please dear God, don’t let any harm come to my beloved.
