Chapter 1
Chapter 1: The Trap “Walk.” Nora didn’t move. The heavy satin of the wedding dress felt like a gilded cage. “I can’t,” she whispered, her voice trembling under her breath. The man standing directly behind her leaned in. His voice was calm, almost polite, but the threat beneath it was ice-cold. “You can. And you will.” Her white-knuckled fingers tightened around the bouquet, crushing the stems. “You said this was just a signing. Papers in a back room. Not—this.” “Plans change, Nora.” “That’s not my problem.” “It becomes your problem the moment we cut off your brother’s life support.” The threat hung in the air, heavy and suffocating. Nora closed her eyes, forcing a breath into her lungs to steady her racing pulse. “After this,” she said, her voice dropping to a fierce whisper, “the debt is entirely wiped. Every single dollar.” “Gone. And the criminal charges against you vanish.” She let out a slow, defeated breath. “Fine.” The man reached forward and adjusted the thick lace veil over her face. His movements were precise, careful. Like he was handling a high-value asset, not a human being. “Remember,” he hissed in her ear, “from this moment on, you are Valentina Laurent. You don’t hesitate. You don’t explain. You don’t panic.” Nora wanted to laugh at the absurdity of it. Instead, the heavy oak doors swung open. A wall of classical music flooded the space, accompanied by the blinding flash of cameras. Light hit her eyes through the lace veil, stripping away her anonymity. Rows of elite guests turned to look. A collective ripple of approval moved through the massive, opulent hall. They were rich, powerful, and watching her every move. Nora forced her feet forward. One step. Then another. At the end of the aisle stood Adrian Voss. The notorious billionaire didn’t look at her. Not at first. His attention was fixed on his platinum cufflink, adjusting it with slow, methodical precision, as if his own wedding was nothing more than an inconvenient business meeting. Good, Nora thought, her heart hammering against her ribs. Maybe he won’t look closely. Maybe he won’t notice. She walked closer. Closer. Then, Adrian looked up. The moment his dark eyes locked onto hers, everything inside Nora froze. He wasn’t surprised. He wasn’t confused by the slight difference in her posture compared to the real Valentina. His piercing gaze settled on her like he had been expecting exactly this. Nora’s step faltered for a fraction of a second. No one else in the crowd noticed, but Adrian did. His eyes narrowed—just a fraction. Her pulse spiked. No. That’s impossible. She reached the altar anyway, her knees shaking beneath the heavy layers of the gown. The officiant stepped forward, his voice smooth and practiced. “…we gather here today to unite—” Nora leaned in slightly toward Adrian, keeping her voice low, masked by the music. “I’m not her. There’s been a massive mistake.” Adrian didn’t even blink. “I know.” Her breath caught in her throat. She turned her head sharply, staring through the veil. “You—” “Don’t,” he commanded quietly, the authority in his voice cutting her off instantly. The ceremony continued as if the earth hadn't just shattered beneath her feet. Nora’s mind raced, her heart pounding frantically against her ribs. “You knew?” she whispered, desperation leaking into her tone. “Yes.” “Then stop this right now.” “No.” His answer was immediate, unyielding. “You’re making a catastrophic mistake, Mr. Voss.” Adrian finally turned his head, his dark eyes locking onto hers with a terrifying intensity. “Am I?” “Yes! I am not the woman you are supposed to marry.” “I’m well aware.” “Then why are you going through with this?” “Because you’re the one standing here.” Before she could process his cryptic words, the officiant’s voice boomed over them. “Do you, Adrian Voss, take this woman…” Adrian didn’t look away from Nora. “I do.” No hesitation. No doubt. It was as if this trap had been laid long before she ever walked into this building. The officiant turned to her. “And do you, Valentina…” The silence stretched. It was heavy, expectant. Nora knew she could stop it right now. She could scream the truth, expose the fraud, and walk away. But walking away meant losing her brother. It meant prison. It meant losing her last remaining option. Nora swallowed the lump of terror in her throat. “I do.” “I now pronounce you man and wife. You may kiss the bride.” Nora exhales sharply, backing up half a step. “Don’t—” Adrian didn’t pause. His large, warm hand lifted to her jaw, his grip firm and completely controlling. “Relax, little wife,” he murmured against her lips. Before she could protest, his lips met hers in a firm, possessive kiss that left her breathless. When he pulled back, her eyes were wide and frantic. His expression remained an unreadable mask of absolute calm. An explosion of applause broke out around them. To the world, it was a flawless, successful union between two elite empires. To Nora, it was the sound of a cage locking tight. ------------------------------ Ten minutes later, Nora walked stiffly behind Adrian toward a sleek, midnight-black Rolls-Royce Phantom parked at the venue's private exit. The driver opened the heavy door for her. Nora slid into the pristine leather interior, and the door shut with a heavy, pressurized thud, sealing her in complete silence. Through the heavily tinted glass, she watched Adrian standing on the pavement, coldly barking a string of orders to the driver. She couldn’t hear a single word, but the ruthless authority in his posture made her blood run cold. The driver nodded sharply, bypassed the passenger side, and climbed straight into the front seat. Adrian wasn't getting in with her. The engine purred to life, and the limousine pulled away from the curb, the city lights sliding across the dark windows like liquid gold. Panic suddenly flaring in her chest, Nora reached for the door handle and yanked it. Click. Locked. From the outside. Her jaw tightened. “Where are we going? This isn’t the route to the reception.” The driver didn’t answer. He didn't even look back. Nora leaned back against the leather, forcing herself to breathe. Just stay calm. Think your way out of this. Suddenly, the phone concealed in the hidden pocket of her wedding dress vibrated violently. She froze, pulling out the burner phone her handlers had given her. An unknown number flashed on the screen. As she stared at the glowing digits, she caught sight of the rearview mirror. The driver’s eyes were locked onto hers through the glass, cold and unblinking. Watching her every move. The phone kept ringing, vibrating aggressively against her palm. Finally, Nora flipped it open and pressed it to her ear, keeping her voice low. "Hello?" A sinister, distorted voice echoed through the receiver. "Congratulations on the wedding, Nora. Now look in the glove compartment. If you want your brother to survive the night, you have exactly ten minutes to poison Adrian Voss's drink."
