16. The look he gives!

1877 Words
Hailey was not kidding when she said that she would kidnap me. After all the fiasco at school and after Alex left, I was leaving too. But, Julia and Hailey stopped me, demanding to know where I was staying. Of course, I didn’t tell them. Julia pursed her lips and informed me that she lived only with two of her siblings, so I could stay with her. Of course, I refused again. But, this time, Hailey completely lost it and started giving me some real threats. I had a hard time determining whether they were friendly, funny or serious. Thankfully, Julia calmed her down somehow and offered to make a deal with me. The deal was that if I agreed to stay at her place, none of them-that meant, no one from their friend circle would bother me again. Now, that was something I had to think over twice. My heart clenched at the prospect of not talking to them, but, it was better than putting them in danger. So, I agreed. And, here I was on a Saturday night, waiting for my so called ‘boyfriend’ to pick me up, so that we could go to a high school party. True to the deal, no one even talked to me again after that day in school. But, did that help with anything? Nope. Not at all. If anything at all, it was all pure torture. Blake casting me sad glances, Millie and Hailey giving me heartbreaking looks, Ashton and Cameron giving me disappointed looks and Alex…well, I couldn’t exactly read his expression. Whenever I was not looking, he had an agonized expression and as soon as I used to catch him, his expression went stiff. This boy was more inscrutable than a rock. But, whatever. I was just happy that my fake boyfriend, the brat was still alive. Because, boy, whenever Alex saw me sitting with him, either a desk got slammed or a wall got punched. I had no clue, what his problem was. But, I was guessing that brat must have done something in the past to piss off Alex. I mean, that brat was not all that likeable. And, he was totally using me. Okay, I was the one who tried to use him first, to get out of the clutches of friendship, but, it didn’t take the brat that long to turn the tables. When I confronted him to tell him that I was using him, he laughed at my face and said that he didn’t care because having me as his girlfriend was doing good to his reputation, even if it was a fake relationship- no, wait, not fake, it was a completely non-existent relationship. I didn’t even allow him to so much as lay a finger on me. Because that would be just gross. A knock on my room’s door, brought me out of my thoughts. “Come on in,” I called out. I was totally surprised when Hailey walked in. I was expecting Julia, because she was the only one who entered usually to call me for meals (which was whole other level of torture because I found out that Madison, the witch was Julia’s sister and she-let’s just not go there, it’s a story for another time.) Hailey immediately started, “I know I am not supposed to talk to you, but, I have to ask you this. Are you going to Mike’s party tonight?” I frowned, “Yes, I am. Why?” “Nothing,” she rushed, “just curious. Also, who are you going with?” “Um…my boyfriend?” my reply came out as a question. Hailey raised an eyebrow at me, signaling me to elaborate. Damn! She wanted to know his name. “Um…his name is brat- I mean, Brent!” I blurted. She deadpanned me, “Really Kris? Who are you kidding? Don’t even for a second think that any of us believes you.” I gave her a bewildered look, “He really is my boyfriend! Brat is…um, my nickname for him.” Hailey crossed her arms across her chest, “Well, then, brat is lucky that he is still alive.” “What the hell? You too? Alex is enough to give him deadly looks!” “I was talking about Alex only,” she replied, cheerily. “I don’t get it. What is his problem?” Hailey rolled her eyes, “So, you too are clueless. Well, they all are in the beginning. Millie was clueless too,” then, she sighed, “God only knows how much hard work I do to make my ships sail,” Why was everything she just said rocket science to me? “Hailey,” I began, “can you please maybe, translate what you just said into simple English?” Hailey shook her head, sighing again, “Now, where’s the fun in that?” And with that, she turned around and left, before I could stop her. Now, what the hell was that? *** “Hands to yourself!” I growled at brat, when he tried to touch my back. “Jeez,” he raised his hands defensively, “we are at a party, where even strangers do things, you know.” I pinned him down with a glare, “Whose idea it was? I told you that I hated high school parties!” “But, if we don’t hang out at parties like this, then, no one is going to believe our act.” I scoffed, “No one believes it anyway,” I told him, recalling Hailey’s words. But, somewhere inside, I still had a tiny hope they would believe if we kept this up. I mean, it took time for people to be convinced. Maybe, if they still see me and brat together, they will actually get convinced. And, by ‘they’ I meant the people who were keeping an eye on me from across the crowded room. Yup, I should have known that they would be here, when Hailey asked me about the party. I just didn’t peg them as the type who went to these kinds of shitty parties where all anyone cared about was alcohol and madness (now, madness covers a wide range of activities which I am better off not elaborating!) “What do you mean they don’t believe it?” brat asked, “My friends are totally buying it.” That was the difference between his friends and my friends- I mean, not so friends. “I am so done with you, brat-” I started, but was cut off by him. “Wait! Are you breaking up with me?” I shot him a dirty look, “Let me complete my sentence first. I was going to ask you shut up before my ears started bleeding. But, now that you mentioned it, breaking up sounds good as well. Oh wait! How can we even break up, when we are not even in a relationship?” That made him gasp. I rolled my eyes. I was beginning to rethink about my earlier plans of keeping up this act. This brat had started getting on my nerves now. While the brat was still gasping, I stole a quick glance across the room. Blake, Hailey, Cameron and Julia were talking amongst themselves. Ashton and Millie were, um…being sweet (let’s settle for that), Alex’s eyes were glued to his phone. I took this opportunity to check him out. He looked so dashing in that v-neck t shirt and jeans. His hair was…just as sexy as ever…in an adorably messy style. His eyes were so beautiful, so magnetic and electric at once, now, more than ever when he was looking at me… Wait! What?! Oh crap! Alex was looking at me! I flinched when I realized that he caught me staring, and swallowed when his eyes refused to shift. I couldn’t look away even if I wanted to, he had me completely enraptured. I was not even sure what kind of look he was giving me this time, but, whatever it was, it was definitely intense. One that made me want to- My thoughts were broken when Julia and Cameron laughed loudly at something. My eyes turned to them and I figured Blake must have cracked a joke. Man, why did I even meet these people in the first place? Now, I knew what it was to miss someone, to long for someone… “Hey, what are you looking at?” brat’s voice caught my attention and I turned to see him holding a glass to me, “Have this. You will feel nice.” It took me a moment to come back to reality and recognize him. When I realized that he was offering me alcohol, I scrunched up my nose, “No can do.” “Oh come on,” he whined, “This is a party for God’s sake! My friends are going to make fun of me if you don’t drink this.” “What the hell?” I snarled, getting up, “I don’t care about it. In fact, I don’t care about this stupid party even. I am going home!” He grabbed my hand, before I could move, “Don’t be such a spoilsport. We just arrived here! Come on, one drink will not kill you!” And then, out of nowhere, three of brat’s drunken friends surrounded us. “Come on, girl, listen to your boyfriend,” one of them sneered. “Dude, you sure hit a jackpot with this one,” another one said to brat, leering down at me. Okay, now this guy was asking for it. Without any hesitation, I raised my hand and slapped the guy across his cheek. He gaped at me, rubbing his cheek, “You shouldn’t have done that.” “You shouldn’t have said that,” I shot back and then turned to brat, “I am ending this fake relationship right now. Don’t ever show your face to me again.” If he or his friends were shocked, they didn’t show it and instead formed a close knit circle around me, blocking my path. “We can’t let you go, until you have this drink, babe.” brat declared. Now, I felt red hot rage course though my veins. This brat and his friends were absolute jerks, that much was very clear and they messed with the wrong person. Before I could do or say anything though, the circle broke when one of the jerks was pulled away and kicked to the ground. My eyes widened when I spotted Alex standing there. And, this time I could easily read the look on his face: dangerous, murderous, cold and deadly.
