Brewed Shadows,
The rain never stopped on Sunset Street. It whispered against the windows of Sunset Café like it knew something the rest of the world didn’t. Like it was waiting. Inside, the café glowed warm too warm for a place that only came alive after midnight. Alex Chen stood behind the counter, polishing a cup that didn’t need polishing. Their movements were precise, controlled… practiced. The kind of control that only came from years of trying to keep something buried. Or something from getting out. The bell above the café door chimed. Alex didn’t look up immediately. “Closed,” they muttered, voice low, calm but edged. The door creaked anyway. A pause. Then footsteps. Slow. Careful. Not human careful. Alex’s hand tightened slightly around the cup. “I’ll just have coffee.” The voice was soft. Almost too soft. Alex looked up. And for the first time that night… something felt wrong. Jamie. Sitting like they belonged there. Dark eyes reflecting the dim café lights in a way that didn’t quite match the room. Like their gaze was pulling light instead of catching it. Like the café had been waiting for them. From the side, a tray slammed onto the counter. “Congrats,” Lara said dryly, not even looking at Jamie. “You just walked into the worst decision of your life.” Jamie smiled faintly. “I’ve made worse.” Lara finally looked at them. And for a split second Her expression changed. Gone. Just as fast. In the far corner, something shifted. Mr. Evans. He hadn’t been there a second ago. Or maybe he had. He sat perfectly still, hands folded over a cane he didn’t need. Watching. Always watching. His smile was thin. Hungry. “Coffee,” Alex said, turning away, already reaching for the machine. But their reflection in the metal surface Wasn’t alone. For just a second Something stood behind them. Tall. Wrong. Watching Jamie. The machine hissed. Steam curled into the air like a warning. Outside Under the flickering streetlight Officer Mike lit a cigarette, eyes locked on the café. “Something’s off tonight…” he muttered. Across the street, Elena stood in the shadows, clutching a worn book to her chest. She didn’t look at the café. She looked at the windows. Like she was expecting them to shatter. Back inside The door opened again. No bell this time. Just silence. Two small figures stepped in. Wet. Unblinking. Holding hands. Lia and Leo. They didn’t speak. They didn’t need to. They walked straight to the center of the café… and stopped. Then Slowly They both looked at Jamie. The lights flickered. Once. Twice. Then steadied. Alex placed the cup in front of Jamie. Black coffee. No sugar. No cream. Jamie stared at it. Then up at Alex. “You already knew what I’d order.” Alex’s voice was quiet. “I didn’t.” From the corner Mr. Evans chuckled. Soft. Satisfied. “Of course they did,” he whispered. “No one comes here by accident.” The rain outside grew heavier. Like something had just begun.
