Chapter1
I read a quote somewhere on the Internet or so that says 'nothing could be more French than pastry.' That is why I love working here at Le Pâtisserie, the permanent smell of vanilla. The smell of cinammon rolls in the oven, all of it. I burst through the doors of the small bakery and take a deep inhale of it, it always smells like rainbow heaven. "Good morning Layla!" Head Baker and owner of Le Pâtisserie; Chris greets. "Good morning Chris!" I greeted back just as enthusiastic. "You look splendid this morning, what's the secret?" He asked putting on display freshly baked muffins. "The smell of vanilla!" I said grinning from ear to ear. He simply laughed . "You say that every morning! Don't you get tired of the smell?" He questioned focusing on the task at hand but raising an eyebrow in question. "Noo! Do you?" I questioned. "Never." He said giving me a toothy grin. Just then Lolo walks in with some cinammon rolls in tow. She and Chris exchanged a small smile before she starts helping him put the baked goods on display. God! I want something like that, something beautiful and magical. Someone to look at me like I mean more to them than anything! "I can literally read your thoughts from your face Layla!" Lolo said laughing. I shaked my head to bring myself fully into the present. "Sorry about that! Good morning Lolo." I greeted "Good morning Layla." "What thoughts can you read on her face?" Chris pipes up. She simply shakes her head and leaves giving him no response. "Hold on babe! What thoughts?" He said turning to speak to her back. "It's a girl's thing." She simply replied. "I thought I was one of the girls!" She turned to me slightly and we burst out laughing. She doesn't give him a reply and goes back to the kitchen. "Layla! What thoughts?" He said turning his attention to me now, I simply shruged and moved to the back. I immediately kept my bag in a corner of the bakery meant for staffs. I grabed my apron and tied it behind my back and headed to the kitchen to begin work. I could see Lolo focused on the bread she's kneading. "Can you start on the donuts Layla?" She asked. "Yeah sure." I responded. I pulled out my phone from the pockets of my jean and connected my headphones to it, I placed it on my head and began to look through my playlist for the right song to start my day. I settled on Adele's Love song and all of her other songs. I headed to the sink after sticking the phone back into my pocket, I washed my hands thoroughly before heading back to my work table. Just immediately remember that my hair was uncovered, I grabbed a hair net and tucked my reddish brown hair inside it. Then prepared all my ingredients before I started mixing them. I loved the meticulous nature of baking, with baking you follow rules, nothing happens by chance. This measurement of flour to that measurement of sugar. All of them must be in sync to create the perfect dough or the perfect batter. To get the right consistency you need to follow the rules with your heart. I'm done kneading my dough and I place it in an oiled bowl to give it time to rest, I put a dish cloth over it and placed it in one of the free ovens. I proceeded to making the glaze for the donuts, I made a chocolate glaze, strawberry and vanilla glaze, took off my head phones and turned around to ask Lolo what pastry I should move on to next but my face immediately contorts in disgust. "Eww! Can you guys not do this in the kitchen or better still get a room." I say as I watched Chris and Lolo all tangled up and locked by the lips and limbs. They didn’t break apart even after my comment so I grab a plastic bottle and throw it at both of them. They broke apart giggling. "You're just a hater." Lolo said, "Ugh! You don't have to rub it in my face guys!" I said folding my hands across my chest. "You should get a tattoo on your forehead that says HATER." Chris added jokingly, I grabbed another bottle and threw it at him, it hits him right on the head. I whooped in victory and did a little dance, Lolo laughs and pushes him off her. "What should I do next?" I asked. "Apple pie." Lolo said checking the ovens. I clapped in excitement and go to our pantry to get some apples, I came out and saw them feeding each other some bread. I rolled my eyes and proceed to ignore them, sticked my headphones back on to block out any noise they might make. I caramelize my sugar first, before dicing the apples into thin slices, munched on a few and continued with my work. I placed the pie in the oven when done and went back to my dough from earlier. I punched the air out of it and knead again before halving them. I rolled out the pieces and used my doughnut cutter to get the size that I wanted, Left it to rise again and then heat up some oil. I fried the donuts and dunked the donuts on the various glaze, topping some of them with sprinkles. I checked the apple pie in the oven and saw it's ready. I started cutting the apple pie into slices and took it outside putting it on display, I took the donuts out as well putting them on display, waiting for the first of our customers to walk through the door. Chris and Lolo are somewhere around and will pop out once they're done with whatever it is they're doing. I walked to the door and flipped the closed sign to open, I walked back to the display front and start brewing some fresh coffee. The bell rings as the door opens up to our first customer. I greeted the customer putting on my most pleasant smile. "Good morning! Welcome to Le Pâtiserre." I greeted. "Good morning." He greeted back scanning our display of baked items. "I would like two scones and a coffee to go." He said looking up and smiling at me. "Cream? Sugar?" I asked packing his order. "None please, I like my coffee black." He says smiling at me and stuffing his hands in his pocket. I nodded in understanding and placed his drink in a to go cup. "That would be three dollars and ninety-four cents." I said ringing it . He paid in cash and I handed him his order after putting it in a register "Have a nice day." I greeted and he nods and leaves. His departure brings in more customers and I'm managing to keep up without the help of some extra hands. There's a long queue and I have only two hands, I can only do so much at a time. I immediately ducked and ringed up Chris. He picks up on the third ring sounding out of breath. Eww! I don't even want to imagine whatever it is they're doing. "Can you guys wait till when we're closed? We have a full house of people that are hungry and will maule me to death if they don't get their food." I said whispering through her teeth. "J-just g-give me a minute." He says groaning at the end. I immediately ended the call not wanting to hear more and pretending I never heard the slurping sound in the background. I stood up and smiled trying to work as fast as I can, attending to their orders. The line begins to reduce just as Chris and Lolo came back looking sated, I made a disgusted face at them before attending to customers. Lolo joins me while Chris goes back to the kitchen to try and restock on the goods we are running out of. We make pastries and attend to customers till afternoon, immediately I attended to the last customer. I plopped down on the bar stool behind me exhausted, I needed serious rest. I began to scroll through social media to find something to watch. I heard Chris and Lolo whispering but I ignored them and continued watching cute animal videos. Awwn! This dog is trying to hula hoop. Just then I heard someone cleared their throat, and I reluctantly tore my eyes from my phone's screen. Chris and Lolo are standing with their hands clasped behind their backs, I gave them a weary look as they continue to smile at me. "Yes?" I ask. "We have good news!" Lolo said excitedly clapping her hands together. I perked up at that and sat straight to hear the good news. "What is it?" I asked getting excited as well. "Alpha Brandon is throwing a birthday party for his son Zayne and they want us to supply all the pastries for the party." She said . I jumped up at that. "Oh my God! That's great news!" I said hugging them both. "This is going to be huge for us!" I added. "We want you to make your key lime cake, we want to take it along for the food tasting." Chris said. I pulled away from the both of them at that. "Are you serious?" I asked with a look of disbelief on my face. They both nodded at me. "It would be our pastry highlight!" Chris said again. "Oh my God! Thank you so much!" I said grabbing the both of them in a tight hug, breaking into quiet sobs. "Don't cry!" Chris said hugging me tightly. "I'm not crying! I just have too much liquid that need to come out!" I said . They wiped my eyes clean and I sniff a bit. "When do I make the cake?" I ask pulling away completely. "Today! The food tasting is later today." "Oh my God! That's not enough time! I need to start on it now so I can make the cream cheese frosting as well." I said admist panick and heading straight to the kitchen. I start pulling out the ingredients and then washed my hands and my work space. It's time to give people an idea of what rainbows taste like!!
