NEW JOB 1.
"Will you come and work as an administrator in my school?"
Petra sat up and held her phone closer to her ear to be sure she heard what Rex said.
"Hello Petra, are you there?" Rex asked since he wasn't getting any response from the other end.
"Y-yes, I'm with you." I replied. "When should I resume?"
"Is 1st of May convenient for you?"
"Jeezzzzzz, Rex are you kidding me right now, if you want me to resume today, I will. Afterall I'm not doing anything at the mo....."
"Now hold on a minute, if 1st of May is convenient for you, I will prefer you resume then. This will give me enough time to arrange your accommodation and transportation to work." Rex replied.
"Alright Rex. Thank you so much. I owe you alot." I gushed excitedly.
"Hey, you know you are always welcome." Rex replied with a smile. "I will chat you up later. Be good." With that, Rex ended the call.
"Yaaayyyyy" I screamed, jumping up on my bed. I rushed downstairs to share the good news with my mom, Olga Smiths.
"Mom, I got a job." I screamed as soon as I entered the Kitchen. Mom turned and looked at me with a questioning look. I knew what that means. I am sure mom is wondering how I got a job without applying, because if I had submitted my CV in any organization or applied for a job, she would have known, since I would have told her about it.
"Which job? When did you apply? Where?"
"Mom, can you please calm down?" I replied, rolling my eyes. Trust my Mom to bombard me with numerous questions at once.
I walked further into the kitchen and stood beside Mom who was mixing something in a bowl.
"I got a call from a friend of mine to resume as an administrator in his school."
"Who is this friend of yours?" Mom asked with keen interest, stopping what she was doing to fully concentrate on me.
"Rex Akeem. We've been friends for eight years though you don't know him. We worked together on some projects a few years back when I was in Minnesota."
"Really? How come I've never heard about this friend of yours till now?" Mom questioned.
"That is because he relocated to Canada..."
"And he has a school here in New York?"
"No Mom, He has a school in Minnesota. it's a private school which has Pre-school, Lower School, Middle School and Upper School."
"And he is asking you to resume as an administrator?" Mom queried further.
This was becoming annoying and my mood was dampening. I had thought my mom will be super excited and happy for me that I finally got a job, considering the fact that I have been at home for the past three months, jobless, since I was unceremoniously sacked from my previous place of work.
I was working as a brand strategist previously but lost that job due to office politics and s****l harassment.
Rex had been my only confidante over the years. He knew about my bad experience at my previous place of work. Infact, when it was becoming bothersome, Rex advised I resigned. But because I didn't want to be jobless, I kept enduring till I was sacked.
Here I am today, three months after, finally got a job offer but it seems Mom is not happy about it.
It's annoying that she was asking these questions and I wondered if she will even let me take the job, considering the doubtful expression on her face.
Going by the thoughtful expression on my mom’s face, I know she was thinking there's no way someone could have just called me to resume for a job I didn't apply for or wasn't even qualified for except there was something attached to it. " What does he want in return?" Mom asked. I sighed. This was becoming tiring. Since I hadn’t replied, Mom pressed further. "Petra darling, I know I'm acting weird since you told me about this Rex guy and his job offer, just that I don't want you to get hurt again. Remember your last job and what happened there, I wouldn't want you to experience the same thing again."
I wrapped my left hand on her shoulder and leaned on her in an assuring way.
"Mom, Rex doesn't want anything in return. I can assure you of this." I replied. "Besides, He is in Canada." I added.
"He can always fly in." Mom pointed out to me while I rolled my eyes. There was comfortable silence between us while the sound of what she was mixing in the bowl was the only thing that could be heard in the Kitchen.
"So what is the salary offer?" Mom asked.
"$200,000 monthly excluding other benefits." I replied excitedly.
Mom paused what she was doing, then she drew me in for a hug. "Congrats, Pety, I'm actually happy for you, but you know as a mother, I worry about you."
"Thanks Mom. I know you worry alot, but I need you to stop doing that. I'm not a kid anymore." I replied still hugging her.
"Pety, I know you are an adult, but you will always remain my little baby." Mom stated with warmth in her voice.
I hugged her tighter and tried to bury my face in her chest to hide the tears that were threatening to spill from my eyes. If there was anything I was grateful for, it will be my Mom. Without her support and understanding, the past three months of my life would have been extremely traumatic and unbearable for me. Mom was the Pillar that held me when I wanted to fall apart. Now I had a chance to start all over again. It was like getting a second chance in life.
"Hey, enough of the mushy mushy stuff." Mom lightly said to me while she gently entangled herself from my arms. I chuckled and moved back from Mom, giving her room to continue her mixing which got me curious as to what she was mixing vigorously.
"What are you mixing?" I asked while trying to dip my finger in the bowl to steal a taste but she swatted my hands away.
"Why don't you go dress up and let's go out for dinner to celebrate your new job." She replied instead. This seems to work as it diverted my mind from what was in the bowl. "Yes Mom. You are the best." I jumped up and rushed out of the Kitchen, running up the stairs to go get ready for the dinner date with my Mom.
I got to my room and opened my closet, thinking of what to wear.
"I've made reservations for 8pm, meaning we leave home by 7pm."
"Alright Mom." I responded while still rummaging through my closet for the perfect cloth.
.
.
Olga Smith decided to cover what she was mixing and also get ready for dinner date with her daughter.
Hanging her apron on the hook in the Kitchen, she stepped into the living room and proceed to her room and headed straight to her closet. As soon as she opened the door to the closet, a light bulb went off in her head. She closed the door and picked up her phone instead and sat on her bed.
She unlocked her phone and searched for Rex Akeem on the internet but nothing came up about him. This had her puzzled. At least something should have showed up, either his social media handles or something.
She searched for private school owners in Minnesota but his name did not show up. Instead she saw something more intriguing. Deciding she would know who Rex Akeem is by the end of today, she dropped her phone and prepared for the dinner date instead.
.
.
Petra finally decided to go casual after spending what seems like hours searching for what to wear in her closet.
I settled for a white sleeveless blouse with a blue denim trouser and black boots. New York’s weather is usually warm at this time of the year of so no need covering up with thick attires.
I brushed my hair and applied a little bit of red lip gloss to my lips. Satisfied with the outcome staring back at me in the mirror, I left my room to join Mom in the living room. Getting to the living room, I noticed Mom was seriously staring at her phone. She was casually dressed also.
"Mom, are we ready to leave?" She glanced up and smiled at me. "You look beautiful."
"Mom, stop flattering me. There is nothing extraordinary about my appearance." I replied with a smile too.
"I keep telling you this, learn to accept compliments." She scolded gently.
"Alright Mom. Can we leave now?" I asked, trying my best to hide my excitement.
"Sure. But I will like to ask you a question." Mom replied, staring at me with a serious look.
I rolled my eyes and groaned inwardly. "This woman is always asking questions." I thought to myself.
"Mom, what is it?"
"I've been searching for something on my phone and I can't seem to get any information about it. Infact nothing is coming up." She replied, studying me quietly.
"What are you searching for? What information do you need?" I asked her, feeling suspicious and trying to have an idea of what information could make her stare at me so seriously.
"Who is Rex Akeem? Mom asked quietly.
