The Proposal
Emily’s heart raced as she stepped into the towering glass building that housed her dream job. The sleek, modern architecture symbolized everything she had worked for: success, ambition, and opportunity. Clad in a tailored navy blue suit, she exuded confidence, but underneath, a wave of nervous excitement bubbled. "Good morning!" A cheerful voice greeted her as she approached the reception desk. "You must be Emily Bennett. Welcome to Sterling Enterprises." "Thank you," Emily replied, flashing a bright smile. "I'm really excited to be here." The receptionist handed her a visitor's badge and pointed towards the elevators. "Head to the third floor. Someone will meet you there." Emily nodded and made her way to the elevators. As she ascended, she couldn't help but reflect on the journey that had brought her here. Years of hard work, late nights, and unwavering determination had culminated in this moment. She felt a surge of pride and anticipation as the elevator doors slid open. Stepping out onto the third floor, Emily was greeted by a young woman with a friendly demeanor. "Hi, you must be Emily! I'm Rachel. I'll be showing you around today." "Nice to meet you, Rachel," Emily said, shaking her hand. Rachel was about her age, with a warm smile and an easygoing manner that immediately put Emily at ease. "Let's get you settled," Rachel said, leading her down a bustling hallway. "Your desk is right over here. We’re really glad to have you on board." As they walked, Rachel chatted animatedly about the company, the people, and the projects. Emily absorbed every detail, eager to learn and fit in. They reached Emily’s desk, a sleek, modern workspace adorned with state-of-the-art equipment. "This is your spot," Rachel said. "If you need anything, my desk is the one next to yours. And don’t worry, everyone here is really nice and helpful." Emily thanked her and took a seat, organizing her things and preparing for her first day. Just as she started getting comfortable, the intercom crackled to life. "Attention all employees, please make your way to the conference room for an impromptu meeting," the voice announced. Emily looked at Rachel, puzzled, leaning over to her desk she asked, "An impromptu meeting on my first day?" Rachel laughed. "It happens. Don't worry, it's probably just a quick welcome session or something. Let’s go." Standing up, they joined the flow of employees heading towards the large conference room. As they walked, Emily noticed the buzz of excitement and curiosity among her new colleagues. "What's the rush all about?" She asked. Rachel leaned in conspiratorially. "Well, there's a rumor that Mr. Sterling, our CEO, is actually here today." Emily's eyes widened. "The CEO? I thought he hardly ever comes to the office." She had made some research about Alexander Sterling, the youngest CEO in all of Ladus City. At 28, he was considered one of the richest men in Ladus. And if the pictures she had seen online were true, then he was also very handsome. Rachel nodded. "True, but he always makes an appearance when we have new employees. It's his way of making sure everything is running smoothly and welcoming new talent." They entered the conference room, a spacious and elegantly designed space with floor-to-ceiling windows offering a panoramic view of the city. Emily found a seat next to Rachel, and they waited with bated breath. A few minutes later, the room fell silent as the door opened and a tall, striking man walked in. Emily’s breath caught in her throat as she turned to look at him. This must be him. Alexander Sterling. The CEO. His presence was commanding, his suit impeccable, and his eyes—a piercing blue—swept across the room with authority. Emily tried to focus, but she couldn’t help but notice how incredibly handsome he was. His chiseled features and confident demeanor exuded charisma. The pictures online did no justice to this man, she thought as she looked at him. Just then, he locked eyes with her, and she felt her heart skip a beat as she quickly lowered her eyes and turned away from him. Taking his seat at the head of the conference table, he began to speak, his voice booming across the room. As he began to speak, Emily forced herself to listen. "Good morning, everyone," Mr. Sterling began, his voice deep and resonant. "I want to personally welcome our new employees and thank you all for your hard work and dedication. At Sterling Enterprises, we strive for excellence, and it’s your commitment that makes this possible." As he spoke, Emily felt his gaze linger on her. She dared not look up, but she could sense his eyes on her, almost as if he were studying her. The intensity of his stare made her heart race even faster. She glanced sideways at Rachel, who seemed oblivious to the attention Emily was receiving. The meeting continued with Mr. Sterling outlining some upcoming projects and goals for the company. Emily tried to concentrate, but she couldn’t shake the feeling that she was being watched. Every time she glanced up, she found Mr. Sterling's eyes fixed on her, a curious expression on his face. Finally, the meeting ended, and people began to file out of the room. Emily followed Rachel, her mind swirling with questions. "Did you notice how he was looking at you?" Rachel whispered as they walked back to their desks. Emily nodded, feeling a blush creep up her cheeks. "Yeah, it was... strange. Why do you think he was staring at me?" That question had been on her mind every time she would look up and she would catch his gaze on her. Rachel shrugged. "Who knows? Maybe he’s just curious about the new employees. Or maybe you reminded him of someone. Don't read too much into it." But Emily couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to it. She sat down at her desk, trying to focus on her work, but her mind kept drifting back to the meeting and Mr. Sterling's intense gaze. Just then, the phone on her desk rang, jolting her out of her thoughts. She picked it up, her heart pounding. "Hello, this is Emily," she said. "Ms. Bennett, Mr. Sterling would like to see you in his office," a voice on the other end said. Emily's heart skipped a beat. "Oh, um, sure. I’ll be right there." She hung up the phone, her mind racing. Why did the CEO want to see her? She looked at Rachel, who gave her an encouraging nod. "Good luck," Rachel said with a smile. Emily took a deep breath and made her way to the elevator. As she rode up to the executive floor, she couldn’t help but wonder what awaited her in Mr. Sterling’s office. Was she about to be fired on her first day at work? She asked herself. Or maybe he wants to tell her off for staring at him during the meeting? But whatever it was, she was about to find out. The doors opened, and she stepped out into a quiet, elegantly decorated corridor. She approached the large oak doors marked "CEO" and knocked softly. "Come in," came the deep voice from within. Emily pushed the doors open and stepped inside. The office was spacious and sophisticated, with floor-to-ceiling windows offering a breathtaking view of the city. Mr. Sterling stood by his desk, his piercing blue eyes fixed on her. "Ms. Bennett, please have a seat," he said, gesturing to a chair in front of his desk. Emily sat down, trying to calm her racing heart. He took a seat behind his desk and leaned forward, his eyes never leaving hers. "I wanted to personally welcome you to Sterling Enterprises," he said, his voice smooth and commanding. "And to discuss something rather important." Emily’s mind raced. What could be so important that the CEO needed to discuss it with her directly? Yes, she was definitely about to get fired. She would beg if push came to shove because she couldn't afford to be on the job market again, she thought. He continued, "I’ve reviewed your background and your work. You’re quite impressive, Ms. Bennett. You have the potential to achieve great things here." "Thank you, Mr. Sterling," Emily replied, her voice steady despite the butterflies in her stomach. "But I also have a proposition for you," he said, his eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made her pulse quicken. "One that could change both our lives." Emily’s breath caught in her throat. What could he possibly mean? She waited, anticipation and curiosity battling for dominance. Mr. Sterling leaned back in his chair, a thoughtful expression on his face. "You see, Emily, I’m in need of a wife. Someone who can help me navigate not just the business world, but also the complexities of my personal life. I’m proposing a contract marriage." Emily’s eyes widened in shock. A contract marriage? Her mind raced with questions and doubts. This was the last thing she expected on her first day at work. "A contract marriage?" she asked in disbelief.
