CHAPTER 41 Life settled in on the Martin farm, and the next few weeks found Layken, Sara Beth, and their makeshift family toiling from daylight to dark. They all joined in to tend the garden, take care of the chickens and goats, and haul water to the peanuts. The plants flourished in the rich soil despite the relentless sun. Sara Beth had gone with Layken to talk to the farmer about tearing down the man’s barn in exchange for the lumber. Before they left, the farmer’s wife had loaded them down with fresh vegetables from their garden, claiming they had way more than they could use. Seymour and Tab had agreed to accompany Layken daily to help make the project move faster.
