Prologue
The heavy iron gates of Silvercrest Keep groaned against the biting northern wind, sounding like a death knell in the frozen gloom.
Evelyn kept her chin raised, though the rusted chains bound tightly around her wrists tore at her frozen skin. Outside the courtyard, the pack she had spent six years tending to, bleeding for, and protecting stood in absolute, cruel silence. Not a single head bowed. Not a single voice spoke in her defense. To them, she was no longer their Luna; she was merely a discarded, wolf-less sacrifice being swept out with the winter trash.
At the top of the grand marble staircase stood Alpha Garrick. His arm was wrapped possessively around Victoria’s waist, his thumb stroking the soft fur of her cloak while her newborn pup rested safely against his chest. Beside them sat the ornate, empty throne that once belonged to Evelyn—now polished and waiting for the arrival of the Alpha Princess Garrick had chosen to replace her.
"You brought this upon yourself, Evelyn," Garrick’s voice boomed across the courtyard, laced with the oppressive weight of his Alpha command. "A leader needs a mate who can carry a strong bloodline, not an empty shell whose beast refuses to wake. Be grateful your useless life still serves a purpose for Silvercrest."
Evelyn didn't flinch. She looked Garrick dead in the eyes, searching for even a flicker of the man who had once promised to cherish her. She found only cold, soaring ambition and bitter indifference.
"You trade me to the north to buy yourself time, Garrick," Evelyn said, her voice quiet yet carrying a lethal clarity through the freezing air. "You think throwing me to the monster of the Obsidian Empire will sate his appetite. But remember this: ashes do not burn twice."
Victoria feigned a delicate shudder, burying her face into Garrick’s chest, and Garrick’s eyes flashed with petty irritation. With a dismissive wave of his hand, he signaled the guards. "Take her away. King Malakor expects his tribute by midnight."
Rough hands shoved Evelyn forward, forcing her into the black carriage adorned with the obsidian crest of the Lycan realm. As the heavy wooden door slammed shut, locking her in darkness, the carriage lurched into motion toward the jagged, snow-draped mountains of the northern border.
Inside the quiet cabin, Evelyn pulled her bruised wrists against her chest. She knew the legends of King Malakor. They called him the Ruin of the North—a ruthless Lycan lord consumed by a dark, agonizing curse that drove him to mad brutality. Few who entered his stronghold ever returned, and those who did were never whole.
Yet, as the carriage carried her further away from the home that had turned into her cage, Evelyn felt no fear. The dutiful, quiet Luna of Silvercrest had died on those marble steps.
Let the Lycan King come. Let his dark curse consume her. Whatever awaited her in the shadows of the Obsidian Empire, it could not be worse than the ghost she had been forced to become—and she would either find her grave in the north, or the power to burn Silvercrest to the ground.
