CHAPTER 3 2 months later Sophie had just settled into her apartment after a long day at work when she heard a knock on the door. She opened it to find her boss, Mr. Jameson, standing there. “Mr. Jameson, what are you doing here?” she asked, surprised. “I need to talk to you, Sophie. May I come in?” he said, stepping into her small living room. Sophie hesitated for a moment, then closed the door and led him to the couch. She sat down across from him, feeling a mix of nervousness and curiosity. “What did you want to talk to me about?” she asked, fidgeting with her hands. Mr. Jameson sighed. “I need to apologize for the way I’ve been treating you. I know I’ve been rude and demanding, and I haven’t given you the respect you deserve as my employee.” Sophie felt a flicker of surprise at his words, but she tried not to show it. “Thank you, sir. I appreciate your apology.” Mr. Jameson leaned forward, his expression serious. “There’s a reason I’ve been so difficult to work with, Sophie. It’s because I need you to be the best secretary possible. We have an important business trip coming up, and I need you to be prepared.” Sophie felt a sense of relief mixed with apprehension. “Where are we going?” “We’re heading to London for a week-long conference with some of our biggest clients. We need to make a good impression, Sophie. That means you need to be on top of everything, from scheduling to travel arrangements to presentations.” Sophie felt a sense of excitement mixed with dread. She had never been to London before, but she knew the stakes were high. If she messed up, it could mean the end of her job, and her career. “I’ll do my best, sir,” she said, trying to sound confident. Mr. Jameson nodded. “I have no doubt that you will, Sophie. I’ll be counting on you.” The next morning, Sophie packed her bags and headed to the airport with Mr. Jameson. As they boarded the plane, she felt a sense of apprehension mixed with excitement. She was nervous about the trip, but also eager to prove herself to her boss. As they took off into the sky, Sophie felt a sense of adventure and possibility. Maybe, just maybe, this trip would be the start of a new chapter in her life, one where she could be more than just a secretary to a rude and possessive boss. Sophie found herself adjusting to the fast-paced lifestyle of the conference in London. Every day was filled with back-to-back meetings, presentations, and networking events, and she was constantly on the go. Mr. Jameson proved to be just as demanding as ever, and Sophie found herself working long hours and weekends just to keep up with his expectations. Despite the grueling pace, Sophie found that she was enjoying the work. She felt a sense of pride in her ability to keep up with her boss and stay on top of everything, and she was starting to build a network of contacts in the industry. One evening, after a long day of meetings, Sophie found herself alone in her hotel room. She was exhausted and sore from standing in heels all day, and she longed for the comfort of her own bed. Just as she was about to collapse onto the bed, her phone rang. It was Mr. Jameson. “Sophie, we need to go over the presentation for tomorrow. Can you meet me in the conference room in fifteen minutes?” he barked. Sophie felt a surge of frustration. She had been looking forward to some downtime, and now her boss was demanding even more work from her. “Of course, sir,” she said, forcing a smile. She quickly changed into a fresh outfit and headed to the conference room. When she arrived, she found Mr. Jameson waiting for her, looking as serious and businesslike as ever. “Let’s get started,” he said, pulling out a stack of papers and flipping through them. Sophie tried to focus on the task at hand, but her mind kept drifting to her cramped hotel room and the hot shower she desperately wanted. As they worked, Sophie found herself feeling a sense of frustration and anger towards her boss. Why couldn’t he have let her have just one night off, to relax and recharge? Did he not care about her well-being at all? But then, as she watched him poring over the presentation, she felt a surge of respect and admiration. He was a hard worker, there was no denying that. And maybe, just maybe, she could learn something from him. As they wrapped up the presentation and headed back to their hotel rooms, Sophie found herself feeling conflicted. She still didn’t like the way Mr. Jameson treated her, but she was starting to see him in a new light. Maybe there was more to him than just a rude and possessive boss. The rest of the trip passed in a blur of meetings and events, and before she knew it, Sophie found herself back at her desk in the office. She was exhausted and jet-lagged, but she also felt a sense of pride in what she had accomplished. She had survived a week in London with her boss, and she had come out the other side with a newfound sense of respect for him.
