Chapter 35: Stone Ruins II

Awkward.
The atmosphere near Caine became gastly silent. Both of them didn't speak, and none of the students wanted to go near where Prince Flynn was sitting at.
'Ha… Why did he even come over here?! What am I supposed to ask him? Hey, how is that old geezer of yours doing?' Caine silently thought, while eating his lunch.
All of a sudden, a familiar voice called out and Lucas popped out of nowhere and sat down next to them.
"Hey, do you guys want to hear a story?"
"..."
Caine didn't speak, while Prince Flynn finally responded to Lucas' question, "Sure, why not."
"This story was from the royal guards that served under my father. It was said that a few travelling merchants reported sighting a ghost in the ruins."
Prince Flynn frowned, then asked, "Ghost? This Ruin?"
Lucas nodded and further explained, "According to the report, the group of merchants decided to take a break here and a few of them decided to explore inside the ruin."
"However, when they finally came out of the ruin, they all say that they witnessessed a female ghost, and when they returned to the capital. The merchants who explored inside the ruin went into a coma the next day and none of them have woken up since."
"Have they sent the guards to investigate this place?" Prince Flynn asked.
Lucas nodded again, "But, here is the weirdest part. When the guards arrived inside the ruin, they didn't find any ghost but a large painting of a beautiful woman in a green dress, however that's not all. The merchants who went into a coma all appeared inside the photo!"
"What's more, they tried taking the painting down, but it just wouldn't budge!"
"So the painting is still inside?" Caine suddenly spoke and asked.
This time, Lucas shook his head and said, "They carved the entire wall that the painting was nailed on and transported the entire thing to an unknown location."
Both Prince Flynn and Caine looked at Lucas blankly.
"What?! You don't believe me? If you don't believe, then why not head inside and take a look for yourself, the carved wall must have left a hole there!" Lucas exclaimed.
"I have no such interest." Caine replied with a boarded tone.
Lucas looked towards Prince Flynn, but all Prince Flynn did was shrug his shoulders.
"Ha… You guys are boring." Lucas commented.
At this point, Caine already finished his lunch and was now lying down lazily on a huge flat boulder.

Everyone quickly turned to look at the direction of the scream.
It was from inside the ruin, and three students momentarily came out running with a frightened face.
"W-What is it?" Hasen-Sensei shouted, while the royal escorts quickly scramble over to them. Five of them quickly headed inside the ruin where the three students just ran out.
"Ghost! There was a ghost inside!" One of the students shouted out, causing the nearby student to look at each other.
None of them really believed him, this could have just been a prank. However, it could have been true, since people turning into undead after their death is quite common, especially if they had a heavy grudge that hadn't been settled.
The students all momentarily stiffen, if there really was an undead inside, then that means there is a dead body. Most of them haven't even seen a dead beast, so let alone a dead human body.
At this point, Caine turned to look at Lucas and Prince Flynn did so too.
Seeing that, Lucas desperately replied with a confused expression, "I don't know, they did say that the painting was taken away and they had already investigated the whole ruin, there shouldn't be any more painting or dead bodies."
"""Ahhh!!!"""
The scream of agony suddenly sounded out from inside of the ruin, they were the voice of those five guards that went inside!
"Everyone quickly get onto the carriages! Half of you escort the students back and half with me!" The leader of the royal escort soldiers suddenly commanded.
Caine quickly opened up his GUI map and discovered six red dots inside the ruin.

'It seems like the five soldiers who previously went inside the ruin had all turned into undead.' Caine's expression turned solemn. If he guessed right, then that means that these undead are capable of turning living human beings into undead!
While Caine was pondering over this, everyone else started to head inside their carriages.
One of the royal guards had already shot a firework into the sky to signal reinforcement.
Lucas and Prince Flynn noticed that Caine wasn't moving and so they both quickly dragged him along to the carriage.
'There's too many people here, I should just leave it to the royal guards. The reinforcement should be able to sort it out.' Caine thought to himself.
