A Marriage Proposal

988 Words
The silence in the grand office stretched thin, taut enough to snap. Liora stared at the heavy cream document resting on the mahogany desk between them. PRENUPTIAL & MARRIAGE CONTRACT. Not an architectural blueprint. Not a consulting agreement. A marriage contract. She let out a breathy, bitter laugh, half-expecting the man across from her to break character and reveal the joke. He didn't. Caelan Ashford sat entirely composed, his long fingers loosely intertwined over the desk. His expression hadn't shifted a fraction since she stepped through the door—calm, patient, and dangerously self-assured. "I'm sorry..." Liora tapped the crisp paper with her manicured fingernail. "I think your legal department handed me the wrong file." "They didn't," Caelan replied instantly, his deep baritone carrying no hesitation. She blinked, her eyes narrowing. "I came here because your assistant said you needed a senior restorer for Hawthorne Manor." "I do." "And instead..." She lifted the contract, letting it flutter back onto the wood. "...you're asking me to trade my freedom for a marriage certificate?" "Yes." Liora searched his cut-glass features for mockery, arrogance, or deceit. She found nothing. No smirk. No sarcasm. No shame. He was dead serious. "I think I'm going to need an explanation, Mr. Ashford. Or I walk out that door right now." "You deserve one," Caelan said softly. The warmth in his voice caught her entirely off guard. She had prepared herself for a cold, demanding billionaire who bought people like property. Instead, he sounded almost... apologetic. Caelan leaned back in his leather chair, his dark eyes fixing on hers. "I know this request sounds insane." "Insane is an understatement," Liora countered, crossing her arms. "You don't even know me." "I know enough." "We've never met!" "I have tracked your career for three years, Liora." Her breath hitched. "My career?" "The Beaumont Chapel restoration. The Westbridge Clock Tower. The Marlowe Estate. The Saint Alden Library." Caelan rattled off the projects seamlessly, without looking at a single document. "And the forgotten 14th-century chapel in Saint-Luc." Liora stared at him, her heart dropping. Saint-Luc was a tiny, off-the-grid project almost no one knew about. "How do you know all that?" "I personally read every inspection report before extending this invite," Caelan said quietly. "Because I wanted to know the exact character of the woman I would be asking to bear my name." A chill ran down her spine. "My work reports only talk about stone, mortar, and budgets." "No," Caelan corrected, his gaze burning into hers. "They told me what you didn't put on your invoice. They didn't mention that you quietly paid $20,000 out of your own pocket to finish the village school roof when their municipal funding ran out. They didn't mention that you turned down a million-dollar contract in London because leaving your sick mother wasn't an option." A tight knot formed in Liora’s throat. Her secrets the sacrifices she hid behind her pride were laid bare in his hands. "And they certainly didn't mention," Caelan continued, his voice dropping to a whisper, "that you returned an unregistered 18th-century diamond pendant to the museum when you could have sold it to clear your debts in a single day." He leaned forward, placing his hands flat on the table. "I didn't choose you for convenience, Liora. I chose you for your integrity. I need a real wife, not a paid pawn." Liora’s pulse raced. The compliment hit her like a physical blow, breaking down her defenses far more effectively than money ever could. "Why does integrity matter in a fake marriage?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly. A dark shadow flickered across Caelan’s striking face. "Because for the next three years, there will be nothing fake about it. You will legally be my wife. No mistresses. No public scandals. Complete devotion in the eyes of the world." "And after three years?" "If you wish to walk away, I will sign the divorce papers and settle fifty million dollars into your account," Caelan stated calmly. "You will be completely free." "What do *you* get out of this?" Liora demanded, leaning over the desk. "A man like you doesn't offer fifty million dollars and marriage just for 'integrity'. You're hiding something." "I am," Caelan admitted without a second of hesitation. The sheer honesty of his confession stunned her silent. "I have enemies, Liora. Enemies within my own bloodline," he revealed, his eyes darkening with a deadly, cold edge. "A marriage to a woman of unquestionable virtue is the only clause that protects my legacy from being dismantled by the Ashford board. But I will not lie and say that is the only reason." Before she could process his words, Caelan pressed a hidden button on his desk. Mara stepped inside, placing a second slim folder next to the contract. "In addition to the marriage agreement," Caelan said, "this is your appointment as Chief Architectural Consultant for the Ashford Heritage Foundation. A five-million-dollar annual salary. Your career remains yours. Your independence remains yours. The marriage and the work are separate contracts." Liora looked from the massive job offer to the marriage contract, her mind spinning out of control. He hadn't cornered her with force he had cornered her with respect, wealth, and an irresistible mystery. She gathered both files against her chest. "You are completely out of your mind, Mr. Ashford." A faint, rare smile tugged at the corner of Caelan's lips, softening his stern features into something dangerously attractive. "I've been called worse." "I'll give you my decision tomorrow," Liora said, turning toward the heavy exit doors. "Miss Hale," his deep voice called out, stopping her in her tracks. She looked back over her shoulder. Caelan was standing by the rain-streaked window, his towering silhouette framed by the gray storm outside. "Whatever you decide," Caelan said, his eyes locking onto hers one last time, Liora’s breath caught in her throat as the heavy doors clicked shut behind her.
