Architectural restoration specialist Liora Hale accepts a one-year contract marriage with billionaire philanthropist Caelan Ashford to pay for her mother's medical treatment.

At first, their marriage is nothing more than an agreement.

But living under the same roof slowly changes everything.

As Liora begins restoring the Ashford family's ancient estates, she discovers impossible inconsistencies hidden throughout history. Portraits that shouldn't exist. Records that mysteriously disappear. Family traditions no one dares explain.

At the same time, she finds herself falling for the quiet man who always protects her but refuses to let her get too close.

Caelan wants to love her freely.

Instead, he keeps pushing her away with one haunting sentence:

"You're not ready."

The Woman Who Received a Marriage Contract
Rain had a way of making every city look honest. It washed the glass towers until they gleamed, softened the glow of streetlights, and blurred the sharp edges of a world that never seemed to stop moving. Liora Hale stood beneath the towering entrance of Solstice Group, smoothing a hand over the front of her worn charcoal coat. Rainwater dripped from the ends of her hair as she looked up. The skyscraper didn't just reach for the sky—it vanished into the clouds. She had restored centuries-old cathedrals, walked through abandoned estates where every floorboard whispered history, and climbed towers older than entire nations. Yet somehow, this building intimidated her more than any forgotten ruin ever had. A security guard approached with a polite smile. "Ms. Hale?" "Yes." "This way, please." His tone carried a unsettling deference—not because of who she was, but because someone powerful had instructed everyone to treat her like royalty. She noticed it immediately. The receptionist greeted her by name before she spoke. An elevator was held waiting. No paperwork. No visitor badge. No delays. As the elevator climbed, the city shrank beneath sheets of rain. *Thirty floors. Thirty-five. Forty.* When the doors opened, the silence was heavy. No ringing phones. No hurried footsteps. Only the quiet hum of a building holding its breath. A woman in a sharp ivory suit stepped forward. "Welcome, Ms. Hale. I’m Mara . Thank you for coming on such short notice." "I almost didn't," Liora admitted, her voice cautious. "I know." That answer lingered between them, weighted with hidden meaning. Mara gestured toward a pair of massive double doors. "Please." The office beyond looked less like corporate headquarters and more like the private library of a secret collector. Floor-to-ceiling shelves, ancient maps alongside modern masterpieces, and a quiet fire crackling against the chill of the storm outside. "Please have a seat." Mara placed a single, surprisingly thin document on the polished wood between them. Liora leaned forward, expecting architectural blueprints for the restoration project she’d applied to consult on. Instead, bold black ink burned into the top of the white page: PRENUPTIAL & MARRIAGE AGREEMENT Liora laughed—a short, breathless sound. "I think you’ve given me the wrong file." "I haven't." "This is a joke?" "Solstice Group does not make jokes, Ms. Hale." Mara folded her hands neatly. "Our employer is looking for a wife. You passed every filter." "...A wife?" Liora stood up, her pulse spiking. "I’m an architect. I applied for a consultation job. I’m leaving." "You may," Mara said mildly. "And your mother’s $450,000 in ICU medical debt will remain yours to suffer through alone." Liora froze. The air left her lungs in a sharp gasp. How do they know that? "We know about the three jobs," Mara added softly. "We know the hospital threatens to pull her off specialized life support by the end of this week. Sign, Liora. Her care will be paid in full before you leave this room." Liora’s fingers trembled against her handbag. It was a trap. A golden cage. Who is paying this kind of price for a stranger? "Who am I marrying?" Liora whispered. "You'll meet him now." The heavy doors parted. Every staff member in the outer hall bowed their heads in synchronized silence. Tailored black suit. Raindrops glistening on a heavy wool overcoat like crushed diamonds. He moved with the grace of a man who owned the air everyone else breathed. Caelan Ashford. The billionaire CEO whose face never appeared in the press and the man rumoured to have destroyed every enemy who ever stood in his path. He didn't look arrogant. He looked almost calm. His blue eyes locked onto hers, holding her captive where she stood. He looked at the contract on the table, then back at Liora’s pale face. "I owe you an apology," Caelan said. His voice was low, deep, and smooth as smoked whiskey. "This is a cold way to meet your future husband." Liora searched his face for cruelty, but found only an intoxicating, unreadable calm. "You bought my debts to force me here." "I gave you an option," Caelan corrected smoothly, taking two slow steps toward her until the scent of rain and cedarwood wrapped around her senses. "If you walk out that door, the money stays in my bank, and you go back to struggling." He stopped just inches away, towering over her. He reached out, his long, warm fingers gently lifting the contract off the desk and holding a gold pen out toward her. "But if you sign..." Caelan lowered his head, his voice dropping to a dark, seductive whisper against her ear, "...not only is your mother saved today you will also learn the real reason I chose you out of ten thousand women." Liora’s breath caught in her throat as his fingers brushed hers. "Choose, The door... or me?"
