The Decision

Liora woke before her alarm, the room bathed in the pale, cool gray of dawn. Across the room, the two folders sat on her desk like an ultimatum. One offered the dream career she had poured her youth into. The other promised to rewrite her entire life. She found her mother on the small balcony, carefully watering petunias in the crisp morning air. "Morning," Eleanor said, glancing over with a knowing smile. "Morning." "You were up all night thinking, weren't you?" Liora joined her at the railing, resting her elbows against the cold iron. "Was I that obvious?" "You've had that exact same thoughtful crease between your brows since you were ten years old," Eleanor chuckled gently. Liora looked down at the street below. "Mom... if someone offered you something that sounded too good to be true... would you take it?" Eleanor paused, setting down her watering can. "I'd ask myself if I trusted the person making the offer." "I don't know him," Liora confessed. "I've only spoken to him yesterday." "Then what does your heart say?" Liora remembered the way Caelan had spoken never raising his voice, never interrupting, offering her an exit route before she even asked for one. A man with billions at his fingertips who took the time to handwrite a note of respect. "My heart says..." Liora smiled softly, "...he's lonely." Eleanor blinked in surprise. "That's not what I expected." "Neither do I." "Well," Eleanor said gently, "lonely men aren't always dangerous, Liora. Sometimes they’re just carrying heavy burdens with no one to help hold them." At ten o'clock sharp, Liora stood outside Solstice Tower. The glass giant no longer intimidated her. When the private elevator opened to the executive floor, Mara greeted her with an approving smile. "Mr. Ashford is expecting you, Miss Hale." The double doors swung open. Caelan stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, holding a steaming mug of coffee. He turned as she entered, his dark eyes locking onto hers with immediate intensity. "I didn't expect you this early," he said softly. "I didn't want to keep you waiting." "I wasn't waiting. "I was hoping." The honesty in his voice set her heart hammering against her ribs. She stepped forward, placing both folders onto his desk. "I've made my decision." Caelan didn't rush to open them. Instead, he gestured toward the plush leather chairs. "Would you like some coffee first?" Liora blinked. "I just walked in here to deliver a life-altering decision, and you're offering me coffee?" "I find difficult conversations go smoother with good espresso," he replied calmly. A small laugh escaped her lips. A moment later, they sat opposite each other, steam rising between them. Liora took a slow, steadying breath. "I accept the position at the Ashford Heritage Foundation," she said. She paused, her pulse spiking. "And... I accept the marriage agreement." Silence fell over the room absolute and total. Caelan closed his eyes for a brief, heavy second, letting out a long breath as if a invisible, crushing weight had been lifted from his shoulders. When he opened his eyes, the look he gave her was with quiet gratitude. "Thank you, Liora." "That's all?" she asked, leaning back. "No confetti?" Caelan let out a real, genuine laugh a deep, resonant sound that transformed his striking face, making him look suddenly younger and breathtakingly handsome. "I don't think Mara would appreciate cleaning that up." The tension in the room dissolved. Liora smiled, but quickly forced her tone to harden. "I have conditions." "Name them." "If this marriage ever stops feeling respectful, I walk away. Immediately." "You have my word." "I will continue my career. I will not be a decorative socialite." "I wouldn't let you give up your craft even if you asked to." Liora tilted her head, searching his face. "You keep agreeing with me. Aren't you going to negotiate?" "Should I start arguing?" "Maybe just once, to prove you're human." Amusement danced in his dark eyes. "I'll consider it for our next conversation." Mara entered the room quietly, carrying a black leather portfolio. "The legal team is assembled in the main boardroom, Mr. Ashford." In the boardroom, six high-powered attorneys stood as they entered. The original contract lay open at the center of the mahogany table, alongside a heavy gold fountain pen. Liora picked up the pen. The metal felt warm in her hand. She looked at Caelan one last time. He gave her a single, gentle nod. No pressure. Just waiting for her choice. Liora pressed the nib to the paper and signed her name in bold, flowing script. Outside the double doors, the elderly receptionist who had served Solstice Group for two decades watched through the glass as Caelan took Liora's hand in a formal, respectful handshake. A soft, bewildered smile crossed the older woman's face. "I've worked for that man for twenty years," she whispered to herself in shock. "I've never seen Caelan Ashford look at anyone like that before..."
