Elena Carter has had enough of being the good girl who follows the rules—especially after her long-time boyfriend left her for someone more "exciting." When her parents push her into yet another blind date, she’s ready to sit through a dull dinner and leave. But what she doesn’t expect is to be seated across from Damian Steele—the cold, enigmatic corporate lawyer who just happens to be her ex’s boss.

Damian isn’t thrilled to be here either, but he has his own reasons for playing along. He’s up for a major promotion at his law firm, and a stable, committed relationship would boost his image. On impulse, he proposes a deal: they pretend to date for a month—long enough to satisfy their families and help him secure his promotion.

Elena agrees, thinking she’ll be the one in control. However, from their first public outing, the tension between them is anything but fake. Damian is used to winning—both in the courtroom and in life—but Elena is the first woman who refuses to be intimidated by him. She challenges him, teases him, and unexpectedly, makes him feel.

The Blind Date
Elena Carter: The Woman Who Rebuilt Herself Elena Carter wasn’t the type to believe in fate. She was a woman of facts, logic, and careful planning—traits she had learned to perfect after years of heartbreak and setbacks. At twenty-eight, she had clawed her way up the ranks in the fast-paced world of corporate marketing, earning her spot as the lead strategist for one of the top advertising firms in the city. Long gone were the days of being Brandon Sinclair’s fiancée, waiting in the shadows as he prioritized business deals over their relationship. She had been a fool back then—believing love was about sacrifice, about waiting for someone to see her worth. Now? She wasn’t waiting for anyone. Her job at West & Co. Advertising demanded long hours, ruthless pitches, and an ability to stay ahead of the competition. The company had built a reputation for handling elite clientele—billion-dollar brands that dictated trends in fashion, technology, and luxury markets. And she was at the center of it all, crafting campaigns that could make or break an empire. The office, located on the top floor of a sleek Manhattan skyscraper, was as cutthroat as it was glamorous. Boardroom meetings were battles, and only the strongest survived. Elena thrived in this world. She was sharp, unyielding, and utterly irreplaceable. Or so she thought. Because tonight, instead of celebrating her latest campaign’s success, she was sitting in a dimly lit restaurant, forced into a blind date. By her parents. The Blind Date from Hell—Or Was It? The restaurant was too fancy for her mood. Dimmed chandeliers, candlelit tables, and an air of forced romance clung to the atmosphere. Elena exhaled sharply, checking her watch for the third time. 7:59 PM. One more minute. If this mystery man didn’t show, she was leaving. She took a sip of her red wine, mentally cursing her mother for setting her up with yet another “nice, respectable man.” In her mother’s eyes, love was a necessity, not a choice. And Elena? She was just fine being alone. But then, at exactly 8:00 PM, the air shifted. A tall figure entered the restaurant, his presence commanding attention without effort. The maître d’ greeted him with urgency, practically tripping over himself to accommodate the newcomer. Elena frowned. Who the hell was this guy? And then he turned. Damian Steele. Her ex-fiancé boss. Damian Steele: The Power Behind the Name Damian Steele wasn’t just a high-powered lawyer—he was the high-powered lawyer. CEO of Steele & Associates, one of the most prestigious law firms in New York, he was the man billionaires called when they were in trouble. Ruthless in negotiations, legendary in the courtroom, and infamous for never losing a case, he was the kind of man people both feared and admired. And he was sitting across from her. Elena blinked, barely able to process what was happening. Out of all the men in New York, her parents had set her up with Damian Steele? Tall, broad-shouldered, and dressed in an impeccably tailored black suit, he was every bit as imposing in person as he was in reputation. His dark hair was neatly styled, a stark contrast to the sharp intensity of his storm-gray eyes. Eyes that were currently watching her. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then, he smirked. “Well,” Damian said, his voice deep and smooth, too self-assured. “This just got interesting.” Elena wanted to scream. A Game Neither of Them Expected “Is this a joke?” she asked, gripping the stem of her wine glass as she glared at him. Damian’s smirk didn’t falter. “Not unless your parents have a twisted sense of humor.” Oh, they did. Clearly. She exhaled through her nose. “Look, I don’t know why you’re here, but I have no intention of sitting through this dinner pretending we have anything in common.” He leaned back in his chair, completely unbothered. “That’s a shame. I was starting to enjoy myself.” She scoffed. “You don’t even know me.” “Oh, but I do,” Damian countered, his voice dropping into something dangerous, almost teasing. “You’re Elena Carter. Brilliant strategist. The woman who single-handedly turned West & Co. into a powerhouse. And, if I’m not mistaken, the same woman Brandon Sinclair was stupid enough to let go.” Her jaw tightened at the mention of her ex. “Funny,” she shot back. “I don’t recall ever being on your radar.” His expression didn’t change, but something in his eyes darkened. “I have a habit of keeping tabs on people who intrigue me.” She bristled. “So, what? You’re here to see if you can mess with your employee’s ex for fun?” He chuckled—a deep, rich sound that sent an involuntary shiver down her spine. “Not quite. But now that you mention it, this could be very entertaining.” She narrowed her eyes. “You’re enjoying this, aren’t you?” “I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t.” Elena clenched her jaw. “Well, I’m not playing along.” Damian sighed, tilting his head. “That’s unfortunate. Because I actually need your help.” Her brow furrowed. “With what?” He reached into his pocket, pulling out his phone, tapping a few times before sliding it across the table. Her eyes widened as she read the message on the screen. “Damian, you need a date for the gala this weekend. Someone respectable. No scandals. No distractions.” “I don’t care who she is, just make sure she looks like she belongs on your arm.” Her gaze snapped back to his. “Are you serious?” He tilted his head. “Help me out, and I’ll make sure Brandon regrets ever letting you go.” She arched a brow. “And why would I want to make him regret anything? I’ve moved on.” His lips quirked up. “Sure. But imagine his face when he sees you with me.” She hated that a small, petty part of her liked the idea. A fake relationship. With Damian Steele. What could possibly go wrong? Right?
