The Assignation

22 Years Later Phoenix pulls her coal black hair into a tight bun, then applies some blush to her Slavic Cheekbones. She puts a clear gloss onto her bee-stung lips. Giving herself a once over last look in the mirror, she concludes that she’s ready for work. She opens her bedroom door, and shakes her head as she hears Stevie Nicks being blared through one of the speakers in the mansion. The Mansion was just that…. A Mansion… Meaning that in such a big place her Mother still manages to play Stevie Nicks, so that everyone would be able to hear it. She walks down the spiral stair case, putting her phone in her back pocket of her skinny jeans, after checking the time. She will be able to make a coffee and then off to work. “Rock on, gold dust woman…Take your silver spoon and dig your grave, yeah, Well, it's a heartless challenge, You pick your path and then you pray…” Her mother Sings with a passion into a whisk, pointing the top between her mouth and Phoenix, “Sooooooo, I made it just in time…” Phoenix shouting over the music and prolonging the o in the so. She raises her eyebrows at her mother. “You wake up in the mornin', You see your sunrise, loves to go down, Lousy lovers, they pick their prey But they never cry out loud, no, they don't cry out.” Her mother continues. Phoenix  walks over to the coffee pot, boiling it for coffee. “Good I’m not late…” She looks behind her and her brother stands near her mother waiting for the Chorus of the song to start again. “Did she make you cry, make you break down, Shatter your illusions of love ? Now tell me, is it over now? Do you know how? Pick up the pieces and go home, go home, go home!” They sing with each other, putting all emotion into the music. “Is this about dad again?” Phoenix asks turning back around after making her coffee. She stands and leans on the table behind her watching her mother and Younger brother put all their heart into a performance. “It would be absolutely lovely to see you sing with them…” She hears a voice say to her… So she does as the voice says and sings the last Chorus with her Brother and her mother. Phoenix often hears voices, but has never told anyone besides Rowen her younger Brother. She felt if she did tell anyone else they would think she’s losing it. When the song was done. They turned the music down, now only hearing it in the back ground. “Glad you could join us Nix…” Her mother says kissing her on her head extremely exhausted from the most recent performance. “Okay well that is my last concert unfortunately…” Phoenix responds looking at her younger brother, as her mother goes back to the pot she was obviously stirring with that whisk she just used as a microphone. “Morning Grumpy face…” Phoenix’s brother says to her. Phoenix bites her lip nervously. “I’m not grumpy alright, stone… I’m just feeling off today…” She responds taking a sip of her strong coffee. Her mother instantly stops stirring her pot and faces her. “Do you want to talk about it?” She asks. “Do you want to talk about your little performance the past couple of days? Is it because your and dads anniversary is coming up?” Her mother purses her lips, before turning back to her pot instantly. “No its not… I’m over your Father Phoenix… It’s been years now you know this…”She responds. “You know Nix is right… When it’s close to Halloween, well, your guys anniversary you kind of start acting up…” Stone says leaning on the table looking at his mother and pouting his lips slightly. Their mother shakes her head, not looking at them. “Well I better be off… I’ve got a job to do, people to see.” Phoenix says putting her cup in the sink and kissing her mother on the head. “It will be okay… We are here for you… We love you… Rather let him stay as far away as possible… We don’t need him, you don’t need him, we never have… So maybe, just maybe, tomorrow… Can we see if we can get the band together and play some Fleetwood mac?” She says to her mom, and receives a chuckle in return. She kisses Stone and makes her way to work. “Did I miss it?” Valkyrie Asks running into the kitchen. Valkyrie was the youngest sibling of the Grove family. At only nineteen, Grade A student and studying to be a pharmacist. “Yup… You did, but Nix has requested a full Fleetwood mac performance tomorrow… Are you in?” Valkyrie chuckles, “I’m totally in… As long as Stevie nicks has enough cutlery to spare for that… Maybe we can bring the rest of the crew in…” She smiles at her brother Stone. Stone is the third born in the collection of Grove’s. Having twenty five years under his belt, he reigns just below his older brother Rowan. “Great… What do you say Mom?” Amethyst turns to her kids and smiles, showing her perfect teeth. Valkyrie tucks her frosted white hair behind her small ears, She bats her large fierce Emerald green eyes at her brother. “Oh no, don’t bat those eyes at me… I’ve got the same ones… Remember… Siblings?” Stone says looking at her disgusted, “What’s your point?” Valkyrie asks, “My point is, No… That doesn’t work on me whatsoever… and No I’m not giving you a lift… Page will have my head if I’m late again…  That sister of ours is a real bossy boots when it comes to punctuality…” He says rolling his eyes at the last bit. “Mom… Stone won’t give me a lift to school, I’m going to be late for class…” She says. They argue back and forth, not realizing their mom is deeply emotional at the moment. Crying into the pot. “Mom…” Out of nowhere Rowan walks past the arguing siblings and straight to his mother comforting her… when Rowan called his mother, the two looked up at their mother instantly. “Mom?” Stone says, as Rowan escorts her to the breakfast table. She wipes her tears from her frowning face. “I’m fine… I’m just… I’m not feeling right today… I think I just need a lie down…” She says. They don’t ask anything they just watch as their mom walks out of the kitchen. “What are you two Quarreling about so damn early in the morning?” Rowan asks sternly. His Hair cut to frame his face in a short and sleek up style. His Emerald eyes staring between the two of his siblings. “I’m Late for work… Demi is gone to work, Nix is gone to work, Pagan is going to kill me if I’m late again, Rowan, She needs a lift…” “So Stupid… so Early… I will take you…” Rowan mumbles under his breath and sighs. Walking abruptly out the kitchen, while he fixes he neatly trimmed black hair. “Such a tight ass…” Stone whispers rolling his eyes at Valkyrie. She giggles, then runs after her older brother. Stone soon followed else he too would have to deal with a tight ass at work. “Hello?” Phoenix Answers, “Are you busy?”, “Don’t you have Manners Rowan? Don’t you know how to say Hello?” “Sorry hello Phoenix… Are you Busy?” Rowan responds, his older sister did know better and he respected her for it. When he was Nervous he became abrupt, but Phoenix knew that, she just wanted him to learn better. “I’m actually busy with an autopsy at the moment but you can talk. I’m sure Mrs. Gilmore won’t mind…” “It’s mom…” Rowan says anxiety in his voice, “What wrong with mom?” Phoenix asks holding a scalpel in the one hand and her phone in the other. “She’s just not right… Found her crying over her soup she was cooking this morning.” Phoenix pauses biting her lip, “You know it’s almost Halloween, I mean in two days…” She responds, now cutting into Mrs. Gilmores Chest, “I know but that’s not it…. There is something else Nix, I can feel it…” He responds, She stops once again and nods her head as though he was in the room with her. “I know I feel it too… But what can we do? We can’t act on something that is not in front of us, or something we can just ‘feel’ Rowan… I hear what you saying but I think we need to give her time…. Maybe it’s because dad is with his new girlfriend somewhere God knows, and she is feeling lonely and tender. I mean she always has those Stevie nicks performances around this time of year you know that…” Phoenix says, holding her phone between her shoulder and ear, Trying to use her open hands to open Mrs. Gilmores chest cavity. “Did you feel like this last year? Or the year before that? Or the year before that?” Rowan asks. “No I didn’t… Rowan, let’s talk about this later. I actually just got busy and I like to take care of my clients, Do this with some decency , you know. I don’t want act like they were never alive once… We can chat when I get home. I love you… Don’t think too much into it Okay… We will sort this as a family… Love you…” She says dropping the call, and huffing. Blowing a piece of stray hair from her face and properly taking care of the lifeless body that lies in front of her, ready to get the rest of the Autopsy done. “morning Class, Please take your homework out… I would like to go through it with you all.” Demetria Grove says to her class taking a seat behind her normal desk, looking at her class. Her phone beeps, “Your kiss is so amazing. I can’t wait to have another one.” She turns pink in the face. Touching her lips, last night was the last time she felt those beautiful soft lips on hers. “How about in the next half an hour… I’m done with my class. It will be quick… But I know we can make it worthwhile…” She responds quickly before her class starts bringing their homework books forward. “At our usual spot then…” Was the last message she received, Bringing a smile to her face. She glowed as she taught her class for the rest of that half an hour. Demetria Grove was the fifth born Child of the Grove bloodline. Twenty one years of age and teaching a class of ninth graders, chemistry. Apart from her family life, her secret obsession with her secret love affair thrilled her life. Her love for her family was inevitable, but she loved the thrill of her private life outside of her family, She although felt that it must come to an end. She felt as though she was lying to her Family, and in the end, Lying to herself. Her class rushed out as the bell rung and she took her cell phone making her way to her secret spot behind the gym of the school where she worked. Private and secure, no one went there besides Her and her dirty little secret. She passed her reflection in the corridor on the way, fixing her black pixie cut hair, and wiping whatever makeup residue was under her eyes. Then she rushed to the spot. Once she got there she had waited a further five minutes, and there was no sign of Her secret person, that was until she was just about to leave. Being pushed up against the wall, by a tiny figure. It surprised her but in seconds their mouths were on each other like a flame on a candle. Hot and delicate. “Why did it take you so long?” Demetria pulls away from the hot lustful kiss. “Babe… I had to get here first. Took my lunch at work… Told them it was a family emergency… Why? You couldn’t wait those five whole minutes…” Her secret love said kissing Demetria’s neck in between words. “I just missed you that’s all…” Demetria says panting slightly. “Okay I won’t be late next time…” “Thalia…” “Mhhh?” She responds kissing Demetria’s neck making Demetria extremely hot and bothered. “I want you to meet my family?” Thalia pulls away instantly. Thalia’s brown eyes staring orbs into her Emerald ones, “Like all seven of them?” Thalia asks, “Well not my dad. You know we speak on occasion, But I mean my mom and my brothers and sisters…” “Um babe, it would be great and all but how? I mean you haven’t even told them you, Well don’t like men? You didn’t want to make it public. I assumed it was going to stay that way…” Thalia says frowning. She tucks her dark hair behind her ears. “I have been thinking about it a lot. I mean my brother came out the closet when he was sixteen and no one had a problem with it… My family will be fine with it… Yes…. I love you and I want to make it public… I mean that is unless you don’t want to?” Demetria says nervously. “Babe, we can look at doing it… Just not just yet. My Mexican roots are deep. I haven’t told anyone yet either…” Demetria nod's disappointed in a sense. She could always tell them by herself, but would still need to keep her relationship a secret. Maybe it wasn’t such a big thrill after all, she thought. She kissed her secret girlfriend goodbye, “I’ve got to go back to class… We will chat later…” Leaving and taking her disappointment with her. She taught her class the rest of the day. Without the smile she had earlier. “remember to clean out the Cupcake pans… It’s punishment for being late again this morning Stone!” Pagan shouts from the front of her shop. The bakery was awfully quiet today having one or two client s here and there, But nothing wow. Usually it was buzzing. It wasn’t normal, She didn’t know why. Maybe it was her mood. She felt down and felt like she had an anxious feeling in her gut. She hardly got it, but today she woke up with it. “Your just a tight ass like Rowan.” Stone yells back. She rolls her eyes, even though her big brother couldn’t see. “two years older but I’m still the Mature one.” She chuckles, talking to her cashier Amber. Her Crimson red wavy hair swings back and forth as she chuckles, “What? I heard you!” Stone says yelling through the noise of the cutlery and pans knocking together. Pagan the fourth child of the Grove ménage. Made the most unbelievably tasting pastries. She baked her life away opening up her own bakery at just twenty three years of age. Her hair color matched her soul. The fire was in there and they created the most decedent desserts. She looks in the reflection of a glass show window, fixing her flaming red bangs from out her eyes, giving a clearer view of her Emerald orbs staring back at her. She smiles checking her teeth to see if there was anything stuck. She felt on edge and Worried for some reason. Her OCD was to make sure she looked perfect. She took her powder out of her bag puffing her nose to cover her lightly visible freckles. “Page! Where’s your phone?” Stone Shouts running to the front desk where Pagan stood. “In my bag why?” He lifts his phone to show her, a message. “GET TO HOSPITAL NOW!” Pagan takes her phone out and checks it, “mom sent me the same message…” She responds, it feels like suddenly a ball of combustible energy had just dropped in her stomach. She stares at her wide eyed brother. “Amber… Please look after the shop. I will call you later to let you know what’s happening… You know what to do…” she says packing her things and taking out her car keys.  It wasn’t often that they would be called out to the hospital, except in severe cases, but it hardly ever happened. “Stone I’m scared…” “so am I Page… So am I…” He responded strapping himself in.
