Leaving Home
*Narrator*
Arunia Knightspree, or Rune as she was called by her family and two best friends, was sitting out by the fountain in front of her school for the very last time. She was finally 18, and had just graduated. She looked at her reflection and frowned. She had been feeling off all day, and couldn’t quite place why. She looked herself over, thinking how normal she looked at the moment, with her long black hair and her pinkish pale skin. Her eyes were two different colors, green and pale blue. Most people liked to make fun of her, but she could finally get away from it all.
“Hey Rune!” She looked up and saw Blane and Sara walking towards her, smiling like idiots. They were going to head out for the same collage that night. Sara pushed Blane out of the way and laughed.
“I don’t know why they don’t just get together already.” She thought to herself. They’d liked each other since kindergarten, but never took the plunge.
“So are you all set Rune? We’re packed and ready to head out as soon as you are.” Sara said gleefully. She was always the cheerful one. Blane smiled next to her and shifted on his feet uncomfortably.
“Yeah, I just have two bags, as usual. You know me, never stayed anywhere long enough to call home.” Arunia said, looking back into the fountain. She sighed and stood up, wiping her hands on her jeans. The three of them headed to Blanes van and started on their journey.
(Meanwhile a few streets over)
*Darian’s POV*
Something in the air smelled absolutely heavenly. Like myrrh and a warm summer breeze. I tried to ignore it and focus on my business deal with our new client but it was proving rather difficult.
“Mr.Nightshade, I’m so glad we could come to an agreement and will be working together. Thank you for coming all this way, and for your time.” Mr. Nanaso said. He was a fat little squishy man with a bad toupee and even worse voice, but he was rich and was going to make me richer, so I couldn’t complain. I said my goodbyes and rushed out the door.
“That was our mate Darian. I know it.” Fen, my inner wolf, stated the obvious. As usual.
“Yes Fen, I know. But I couldn’t very well leave the meeting. We need that money, you know we do. I can disappoint our people, even with the chance of losing our mate. We’ve made it this long. We will find her.” I was irritated, mostly because every time we came to this small, dingy looking human town, I smelled her. But she wasn’t looking for me. So why should I worry about her? Besides that she’s my mate and we’re fated to be together?
“You know I can hear your thought right you prick?” Fen grumbled. He wanted to rush after her, every time we’ve smelled her scent.
“Fen, I promise we will find her. So please drop it.” I sighed and kept walking. I walked up and down the streets, following where her smell was strongest. As always, it was strongest at the fountain i front of the towns school. Dreary and barren looking, it was oddly comfortable. Maybe that’s why she was always hanging around it.
“Maybe one day she’ll be here....”
*Arunia’s POV*
I gathered my two small bags from my small and dark room and let out a small breath as I readied myself for the fight that was going to happen as soon as I tried to leave. My mother, Maria, was a drunk, and a druggie. She depended on my income for many things, including her vices. She wasn’t going to let that go easily. She wasn’t always like that, and I desperately missed my mother, as she was before..
I steeled myself against my fear and walked into the living room. To my surprise, she was asleep on the couch, and wasn’t waking up any time soon. She snorted in her sleep as I walked by and gently left the note I had written to her on the coffee table. I looked around my home one last time, remembering everything I could, every single thing, before I slipped out of the house and ran to the van.
“That was quick. I figured your mother would have more of a fit. What happened?” Blane asked.
“She was passed out so I just left her a note saying I’m headed to collage and not to come looking for me anymore because I’m never coming back.” I said as I finally let out the breath I’d been holding. Blane was already driving and I finally felt free. Free of everything. I was on to a better life, a normal life.
