The Town Where Ghosts Hide
The rain began just as Evelyn Carter crossed the county line. Fat drops splattered across the windshield of her aging sedan, blurring the narrow road that twisted through towering pines. The farther she drove, the quieter the world became. The city lights had disappeared hours ago, replaced by dense forests, abandoned gas stations, and weathered signs pointing toward places most people had forgotten. That was exactly what she wanted. To be forgotten. She tightened her grip on the steering wheel as another flash of lightning lit the empty road. Her phone, resting on the passenger seat, remained switched off. It had been that way for three days. Three days since her life had fallen apart. Three days since she had discovered the man she planned to marry had been lying to her from the very beginning. Ryan had promised forever. Instead, he had stolen everything. Her savings. Her identity. Her trust. Worst of all, he had delivered her name to dangerous people who believed she possessed something worth killing for. She still remembered the conversation she had overheard outside the warehouse. "She has no idea what she's carrying." "If she talks, she's dead." "We deal with her tonight." Those words had echoed in her mind every mile since she fled. She had packed only what could fit into the trunk of her car, withdrawn the little cash left in her account, and driven without a destination until she found a faded map in an old service station. One town caught her attention. Ashridge. Population: 2,846. Hidden between mountains and rivers. Far enough from the city that almost nobody had reason to visit. Perfect. Or so she hoped. A rusty welcome sign emerged from the rain. WELCOME TO ASHRIDGE. WHERE EVERYONE KNOWS YOUR NAME. Evelyn forced out a tired laugh. "I hope not." The town looked frozen in time. Brick storefronts lined the main street. A diner glowed beneath flickering neon lights. An old bookstore sat beside a hardware shop that appeared untouched for decades. Pickup trucks were parked outside nearly every building. People here noticed strangers. She could already feel curious eyes following her car. Her stomach growled. She had not eaten since sunrise. Across the street, a weathered wooden sign creaked in the wind. IRON SHADOWS BAR Motorcycles filled the parking lot. Dozens of them. Black. Chrome. Loud even while standing still. Leather clad men stood beneath the awning, laughing over bottles of beer as rain rolled off their jackets. Most of them were covered in tattoos, their expressions hard enough to make ordinary people cross the street. Evelyn hesitated. "This is a terrible idea." Her gas gauge disagreed. The needle rested below empty. She needed food. She needed directions. Most of all, she needed to stop driving before exhaustion caused an accident. Taking a steadying breath, she grabbed her backpack and stepped into the rain. The conversations outside the bar died almost instantly. Every pair of eyes shifted toward her. She kept walking. Her sneakers splashed through puddles as she pushed open the heavy wooden door. Warmth wrapped around her immediately. The smell of grilled meat, coffee, engine oil, and old wood filled the air. Country music drifted from a jukebox in the corner. The room fell silent. Not one person looked away. Evelyn resisted the urge to turn around. A bartender with silver hair polished a glass behind the counter. "What can I get you?" "Just coffee," she answered quietly. "And maybe directions to the nearest motel." The older man studied her for a moment. "You passing through?" "I hope so." Before he could respond, the front door opened again. A blast of cold air swept inside. Heavy boots struck the wooden floor. One. Two. Three. The silence deepened. The bartender straightened. Several bikers instinctively stepped aside. Evelyn frowned. Whoever had entered clearly commanded respect. Or fear. She turned. The man standing in the doorway looked as though he had walked straight out of a nightmare. He was tall enough that the doorway seemed too small for him. Dark hair brushed the collar of his leather vest. Black ink covered both muscular arms, disappearing beneath rolled sleeves. A scar traced the edge of his jaw, giving his already intimidating face an even rougher appearance. Rain clung to him, but he paid it no attention. His gray eyes swept across the room. Then stopped on her. Everything else disappeared. The music. The conversations. Even the storm outside. His expression did not change, yet something in his gaze made the tiny hairs on the back of Evelyn's neck stand up. Not because it was cruel. Because it was calculating. As though he were trying to solve a puzzle. The bartender cleared his throat. "Boss." The man gave a brief nod without looking away from Evelyn. "You don't belong here," he said. His voice was low, calm, and carried effortlessly through the room. Evelyn folded her arms. "I was just leaving after my coffee." "You won't." Something about his certainty irritated her. "I don't remember asking your permission." A few bikers exchanged amused glances. One even chuckled. The stranger took another step closer. "What is your name?" She hesitated. Giving strangers her real name no longer felt safe. "Lena." His eyes narrowed slightly. "A lie." Her heartbeat stumbled. "Excuse me?" "You answered too slowly." She forced herself to hold his gaze. "You always interrogate strangers?" "Only the ones being hunted." The blood drained from her face. She had never mentioned that to anyone. Not here. Not anywhere. "You're mistaken." "No." His answer came without hesitation. "I can see it in your eyes." Before Evelyn could respond, tires screeched outside. Several engines roared into the parking lot. The bartender cursed under his breath. One biker rushed to the window. "Black SUVs," he said sharply. "Five of them." Another biker reached beneath the counter and produced a handgun. The room transformed in seconds. Friendly faces vanished. Men moved with practiced precision, checking exits and exchanging brief nods. No one looked surprised. Only prepared. Evelyn's pulse thundered. They found me. How? She had changed routes. Paid cash. Avoided cameras whenever possible. It should have been impossible. The tattooed stranger finally looked away from her and toward the window. His jaw tightened. "So," he murmured. "They came faster than I expected." Evelyn stared at him. "You know who they are?" "I know exactly who they are." He looked back at her, his voice steady despite the approaching danger. "They aren't here for this town." His eyes locked onto hers. "They're here for you." Outside, car doors slammed shut. Then someone knocked once against the bar's front door. The entire building fell silent. No one moved. No one breathed. Then a voice echoed from the other side. "We know she's in there." The stranger smiled, but there was no warmth in it. "Looks like your past just found you." The lock on the front door slowly began to turn.
