Falling for the Nanny

Kara’s POV “f**k!” I heard dad yell from in his office. I had just finished college three weeks ago and moved back in with my dad. It was supposed to only be for a few weeks but dad convinced me to take the next six months off and travel with him and his team for the season so we could spend time together before I moved to California. It wasn’t the original plan but I hadn’t seen my dad much since going off to college in Florida two years ago. “What’s going on dad?” I asked leaning against the door frame to his office. “Nothing kiddo. Not anything you need to worry about.” He said running his hands through his hair. “Dad come on you can talk to me. I’m not a kid anymore I’m almost 21 you don’t have to keep treating me like a child.” “I know, I know.” He sighed. “But I can’t help it, you will always be my little girl.” My father and I were always really close. He didn’t know about me until I was about six months old, that’s when my mom finally told him he had a daughter. He was quickly become a very famous pitcher in the majors at the time and he gave up his whole career just to raise me. My parents weren’t together when I was younger and I spent most of my time with my dad. When I was five years old my mother died in a car crash and since then it has always been just him and I. “So what is it dad? Tell me what’s going on.” I pushed. “You know who Jaxon Hughes is correct?” He asked. “Yeah dad he’s your starting pitcher of course I know who he is.” I replied. “Well about two months someone dropped a little boy off at his door step with a note saying this your son. Jaxon took the boy in and reached out to me immediately. We sent for a paternity test and it came back that the little boy is indeed his. He has been trying to find a nanny for his son so he could play this season but he just hasn’t been able to find anyone he trusts with his boy. He is talking about taking an early retirement and I would hate to see him do that but I can’t say I don’t get it. I just wish I could do something to help him more but any of the nanny’s I have sent him he has sent away.” Dad sigh again rubbing his temples. “I’m sure this isn’t easy seeing someone else go through what you went through with me.” “It’s not kiddo but I would do it all again for you.” He said giving me a smile. “Well if there is anything I can do to help just let me know.” I said not expecting what was coming next. “Well maybe there is one thing.” Dad said with hesitation. “And what’s that?” I asked. “Maybe you could be his nanny for the season.” Dad said scanning my face waiting to see my reaction. “I mean you will already be traveling with the team this season and you won’t have much to do while I’m at games so it could be a good distraction and a way to make some extra cash before you move to California.” He quickly added. “Dad I don’t think that’s such a good idea. I’m not good with kids I never have been. Plus I’m sure if Jaxon has sent away all the qualified nanny’s you have sent him he isn’t going to be too fond of a 20 year old with no child experience showing up.” I argued trying to change dad’s mind. “You would do fine hunny. His son is one of the most laid back kids I have ever met. Besides the season starts next week and he is running out of options so if you could just meet them and see how it goes. Maybe you will be surprised and it will all work out great.” Dad said. “Ugh, fine.” I groaned. “How old is his son anyway?” I asked. “Oh he just turned a year old January.” Dad responded casually. “What? A year old? He’s still a baby, dad, I can’t watch a baby. I don’t know how to make bottle or change diapers or burp a baby!” “Calm down hunny. Breathe. It will be okay I can teach you that stuff or Jaxon can show you how to do it. You’re a quick learner I think you will catch on fast.” I said giving me a reassuring smile. “I don’t know dad. I mean I will try but I don’t see this going as well as you think it will.” I said wearily. “I think it will be just fine.” Dad said. “Tomorrow we have a training session you can tag along with me and meet the team as well as Jaxon and his son. If his son takes to you then I will bring up to Jaxon about you being his nanny for the season. If he doesn’t then we will let it go and I would push any further. How does that sound?” “I think that will be alright but seriously dad don’t get your hopes up too much I’m not good with kids and usually kids want nothing to do with me. I will try but I can’t make any promises.” “That’s fine hunny I just appreciate you trying.” Dad said with a smile. I smiled back and exited dad’s office kicking myself slightly for even asking what was wrong in the first place. I didn’t know the first thing about children and especially not babies now my father wanted me to become a nanny for one of his star players. I’m not sure what I got myself into but I do know one thing, something in my gut is telling me tomorrow just isn’t going to go well.
