IN HOT WATER
Liz’s hands sweated against the steering wheel, manoeuvring from lane to lane to beat the slow drivers on the main road. She was heading towards an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of Melbourne. Someone had called and explained that Mariana had been kidnapped. She didn’t recognise the voice. He’d given her an address and she jotted it down quickly before he hung up on her.
This mystery caller mentioned how he’d kidnapped Mariana for the sole purpose of making an exchange, but she couldn’t stomach what they planned to do with Mariana. All he said was, “Fuckin’ get to this warehouse or she dies. And no fuckin’ cops or she dies.”
