Friends
"I'm just saying you don't have any friends sweetie." Mrs Woods said to her daughter.
Athena Woods groaned and closed the large Ancient Worlds encyclopedia that rested on the kitchen Island. She took off her round, thick lensed glasses, closed her shimmering emerald eyes and rubbed her temples. She muttered something under her breath.
"What was that?" asked her mother, who hadn't quite heard.
"I don't need friends." Athena replied in a low voice.
"I can't get you sweetie."
"I. Don't. Need. Any. Friends!"
"Why?"
"Why?" Athena gasped. "Why?!"
"Yeah. Why?"
"Because...because...people my age are...annoying. And shallow. They're so obsessed with how many weird strangers on the internet liked their pictures and weak relationships. They stay oblivious to more important stuff like...global warming!"
"Global warming?"
"Yes mum! They say they hate society but they are society. They say they hate rules but every social ladder has the worst constructing rules. 'Oh you don't wear Air force or Nike Jordan Dior thingys? Boo hoo. You can't sit with us.' " Athena said in a deep, jock voice. "And I'm weird."
"You're not weird Thena."
"No. I am. I am weird. And in my generation, weirdos are a dying breed. They're extinct at my school. So there's no friendship hope for me. And besides. I already have Migo."
"Migo is a pet dog Athena."
"Exactly. I don't need human interaction!"
Mrs Woods sighed. "Maybe you just need to give them a chance. You shut them out before they could ever know you."
