Chapter 19: Jack Mannson Fifteen minutes later, Avery sat beside a burly red-headed man with too much beard and who smelled of fresh perspiration. On his snowy trip to Templeton, Avery learned the guy had been a professional nurse and psychologist for the last ten years. Bouncing up and down in the passenger seat, Avery asked, “You married?” Jack had both hands on the truck’s steering wheel. The wipers flicked to and fro. Wind and snow billowed against its glass. “Six years. Guy’s name is Sam. A saint. Sam the saint. I love him with all my heart.
