Chapter 13 CATE’S NEVER BEEN TO this part of town. It’s nowhere near the main strip, as far as she knows. Except she doesn’t know exactly where they are, so maybe it is. There’s a shiny new gas station on the corner. Jay-Jay’s pulled the tow-truck into a garage across the street. Next to that, there’s an old shack that turns out to be a diner. Who’d have thought? Doesn’t have quite the appeal of The Pie Shop, but Jay-Jay tells her it’s the heart of Lament. He suggests she grab a bite while he sees about getting her a car. She checks her phone. Bev hasn’t called back. In a sense, that’s a relief. She doesn’t want to explain what she’s done. There’s a Help Wanted sign in the window as she enters the diner. Apparently they’re looking for overnight staff. “You’re open 24 hours?
