Chapter: The day I broke
The rain was relentless, slicking the winding stone path that led up the mountain toward the looming castle. Anna pulled her cloak tighter, her long, ash-blonde hair escaping her hood and clinging to her wet cheeks. Her heart pounded against her ribs in rhythm with her footsteps. Tonight was her eighteenth birthday. At midnight, she would no longer be under her young aunt's guardianship, and no social gap or family rules could hold her back. After her mother and father died, when she was just a baby, her young aunt had taken her in, raising her as best as she could in a village that felt stifling and cold. But Nicholas—Nicholas had been her true sanctuary. For years, he had been her protector, the quiet shadow keeping her safe and the only person in the world who knew every single one of her secrets. For as long as she could remember, the entire village had treated Nicholas with deep fear and quiet hostility. People crossed the street when he walked down the mountain, and the village elders had repeatedly warned Anna to stay far away from him. Even her aunt had begged her not to trust the lonely nobleman in the fortress. But she had seen past the dark rumors. Passing through the heavy doors, Anna stepped into the grand hall of the castle. Nicholas stood motionless in front of a roaring stone fireplace, yet the air around him radiated a bitter, bone-chilling cold. The flickering firelight caught the sharp angles of his muscular frame and highlighted his short, messy black hair that fell carelessly over his forehead. His deep, dark eyes were fixed on the flames, unreadable and terrifyingly distant. Next to him, a heavy leather travel bag rested on the floor. The ancient portraits on the walls had been covered in dark sheets, and the room felt strangely hollow—stripped of the few personal belongings he kept. Anna froze, the breath catching in her throat. A cold knot formed in her stomach as she looked from the packed bag to his distant posture. She instantly realized what was happening. "Nicholas... what is this?" her voice trembled, cutting through the crackle of the fire. "You're packing. You're... you're leaving." Nicholas didn't turn around, though his vampiric senses caught the sudden, sharp spike in her heartbeat. "You shouldn't have come here tonight, Anna." "Where are you going?" Panic surged through her, washing away all her hesitation. She took a step closer. "Take me with you. Whatever is happening, don't leave me behind. At midnight, I turn eighteen. I'm no longer bound by my aunt's rules or the elders' warnings. I can go anywhere with you." Nicholas closed his eyes, his frozen heart aching with a sharp, silent dread. He felt her desperation, smelled the sweet, maddening blood pulsing beneath her skin, and knew he had to break her completely to save her. A human girl following an immortal monster into the dark was a tragedy he would not allow. Slowly, he turned around, his deep eyes locking onto hers, completely devoid of light. "No, Anna. You are not coming with me," Nicholas sneered, his voice dripping with forced cruelty. "Did you truly think I spent time in the village because I cared for you? You were merely a passing distraction to pass the time. I am done playing your guardian." "No, don't say that!" Anna cried out, tears welling in her eyes as her long blonde hair whipped around her face. "I know you care! Nicholas, I love you! I've loved you for years!" The confession hung in the freezing air, shattering the last bit of silence between them. Nicholas didn't flinch. He forced his face into a mask of total indifference. "How pathetic," he spat, his voice cutting her to the bone. "I reject your feelings. I reject you. Return to your aunt and never step foot in my castle again." The words struck her like a physical blow. The bright hope in her eyes shattered, replaced by raw, suffocating betrayal. Unable to utter another word, Anna turned around and ran blindly out of the grand hall, fleeing into the stormy night down the cobblestone path. How could he? The emotional agony was unbearable, but as she reached the outer gates, the heartbreak morphed into a violent, excruciating physical heat. Anna gasped, stumbling to her knees in the mud just beyond the castle grounds. Her veins felt like they were filling with liquid fire, and the rain touching her warm skin instantly turned to steam. She clutched her neck as an agonizing burn etched its way over her jugular—a glowing, black pentagram searing itself onto her flesh like an ancient brand. A raw scream tore from her throat as the midnight chime from the village chapel echoed in the distance. The seal was broken. Her eighteenth birthday had arrived, awakening an ancient, dormant power triggered by her broken heart. Anna opened her palm, and a blinding beam of brilliant, white light erupted skyward, shattering the storm clouds and illuminating the entire valley. In the dark forest just down the path, a figure burst through the trees. It was her young aunt, out of breath and frantic, having searched for Anna the moment she realized the girl had snuck out. Seeing the blinding column of light and the glowing pentagram on her niece's neck, the aunt's face turned deathly pale with terror. She knew the dormant power Anna's late mother had hidden had finally awakened. "Anna!" her aunt cried out, rushing forward and wrapping her arms around the collapsing girl just as Anna's eyes rolled back and she fainted from the sheer exhaustion of her power. Her aunt hurriedly threw a thick wool hood over Anna's face, hiding her golden hair and the glowing mark, pulling her limp body into the darkness of the woods before anyone—or anything from the castle above—could witness what had just transpired. High above in the castle, Nicholas stood by the tall, arched window, watching the small, cloak-draped figure of Anna run blindly down the rain-slicked mountain path. Every step she took away from him felt like a blade twisting in his cold, motionless chest. His knuckles turned white as he gripped the stone sill, his jaw clenched tight to suppress the urge to run after her. A quiet rustle of fabric echoed through the cavernous hall as a shadow detatched itself from the corner. His long-time friend and confidant stepped into the dim firelight, crossing his arms as he looked from the open courtyard back to Nicholas. "Was that truly the right choice?" his friend asked softly, his tone laced with a mix of sympathy and skepticism. "You broke her heart, Nicholas. She was devotion itself." Nicholas didn't break his gaze from the dark path where Anna had disappeared into the woods. His voice, when he finally spoke, was low, heavy, and completely devoid of its earlier malice. "It was necessary," Nicholas murmured, the cruelty in his eyes melting away to reveal a deep, ancient sorrow. "She needs to live her life first. She needs to experience the world, to grow, to experience reality before she can ever truly belong to mine." His friend sighed, walking up beside him and looking out into the stormy night. "You didn't have to be quite so cruel to her, you know. You cut her to the very bone." Nicholas lowered his head, his short black hair falling over his eyes as a painful sigh escaped his lips. "If I had given her even a sliver of hope, she would have never let me go. But in my absence, protect her, but from afar, in the shadows. She has no idea how dark this world truly is."
