Chapter 12: Broken Armor

943 Words
The shock of his kiss hung heavy in the air, thick and intoxicating. For a suspended second, the world outside the VIP room ceased to exist—no flashing cameras, no demanding pop-star schedules, no grand hotel lounges, and no bitter ghosts of the past. There was only the heat of his skin, the demanding press of his lips, and the fierce, undeniable pull of a bond I had spent five years trying to starve out of existence. Slowly, as reality began to bleed back through the haze of adrenaline and raw desire, my hands—which had curled so traitorously into the lapels of his jacket—began to uncurl. I felt my grip on reality slipping, realizing with sheer terror that I was completely losing control. A dizzying wave crashed over my senses, and in that blinding instant, the floodgates broke. Memories rushed back in a violent, unsparing torrent—the hidden cabin in the woods, his hands tracing my skin, the terrifying night he tore himself away from me, and the agonizing truth of what we meant to each other. Everything came rushing back with crystal-clear perfection. The weight of it crashed over my chest, suffocating and absolute. And then, right against my lips, amidst the deep, possessive rhythm of the kiss, Nicholas murmured the words that shattered the spell completely: "You are mine..." Hearing him claim me like that—so fiercely, so undeniably—broke the heavy trance of the past. It shocked me back to the harsh reality of the present. Panic and rebellious fury spiked through my veins all at once. I refused to be consumed, I refused to fold, and I refused to let him dictate my fate. With a gasping, ragged breath, I shoved him away with all my might, breaking the kiss and stumbling back. Nicholas didn’t even flinch at the push. His crimson eyes burned into mine, filled with an intensity so raw and absolute it made my blood run cold. But the magic-laced haze between us was gone, replaced by pure, defensive defiance. I wiped the back of my hand sharply across my mouth, glaring at him with every ounce of ice I could summon. "I am not yours, Nicholas," I hissed, my voice cutting through the quiet room like a razor blade. "I never will be again." Without waiting for his answer, I turned my back on him, unlocked the door, and walked out of the VIP room, my heart hammering a frantic, erratic rhythm against my ribs. Minutes later, I glided back into the dazzling, chaotic lights of the main hotel lounge. Stefan was waiting near the edge of the dance floor, looking relieved and confused, but the moment he saw me approach with a reckless, glittering glint in my eye, his expression melted into a breathless smile. I knew I was doing the wrong thing. I had noticed long ago that Stefan had feelings for me, but I had always kept my distance. I was playing a dangerous, reckless game, using a good man as a human shield against the monster I could never truly forget. The heavy bass of the lounge's sound system pulsed through the soles of my shoes, vibrating against my bones, but it was nothing compared to the guilt—and the adrenaline—raging inside my chest. Stefan pulled me slightly closer, his hands warm and steady on my waist, entirely oblivious to the fact that he was currently playing pawn in a psychological war. "Ana?" he murmured, leaning down so his lips brushed against my hair. A note of genuine concern cut through his flirtatious haze. "Are you alright? You're shaking. And... honestly, that guy from the VIP hallway is still staring at us like he wants to rip my throat out with his bare teeth." I forced a brittle, dazzling laugh, tearing my eyes away from the shadows to focus entirely on Stefan. I reached up, letting my fingertips trail lightly along the lapel of his suit jacket—making sure the angle caught the exact line of sight of the man watching us. "Don't worry about him, Stefan," I purred, my voice smooth and honeyed, masking the raw turmoil tearing me apart inside. "He’s just an old ghost who doesn't realize he's already dead and buried. Keep dancing with me." Stefan swallowed hard, clearly uneasy, but he nodded and pulled me tighter against him, stepping deeper into my game. I tilted my head back, letting out another soft, melodic laugh that drifted across the space between us. I wanted Nicholas to hear it. I wanted him to taste the bitter ash of jealousy. Every twist, every turn, and every deliberate brush against Stefan was meant to drive a stake through the illusion of Nicholas's absolute ownership over me. Nicholas took a slow, menacing step forward out of the shadows, his patience wearing paper-thin. The air around him seemed to drop in temperature, making the mortals nearby shiver and pull away instinctively. His crimson eyes blazed with a murderous, unadulterated fury that was driving him completely out of his mind. A thrill of dark, dangerous excitement surged through my veins. Let him come. Let him try to claim me in front of the entire elite of New York. I was ready to show him that the fragile girl he had left behind five years ago was gone forever—and that the woman standing in her place would burn the world to the ground before she ever submitted again.
