"It's not rocket science," Bentley commented. "Honestly, I am quite surprised more people haven't figured it out."
Achilles glared at his Beta as if to ridicule him for his worthless comment.
"That's not necessarily what we're trying to figure out, Bentley. What we need to know is if they know about where I really came from."
"Yes," Achilles affirmed. "And as it seems that rat is the only person who knows anything at all."
Bentley scoffed, "Is this your way of asking me to grill Dawson so you don't have to?"
"I could make it an order if that suits you better. " Achilles retorted.
Mel rolled her eyes at the stupid fight. She just wanted any information about her old pack and her parents that she could get. Anything that could help her put together what was going on.
"Fine," Bentley sighed.
"Good. you are dismissed."
With that, Bentley walked out of the room in a huff. Although, he wasn't entirely unhappy to have to see that specimen everybody called Dawson.
Mel's mind forced an idea to her as she put two blatant pieces of the puzzle together. Achilles couldn't know about this though, he would surely not be happy with this idea.
"Hey, um, I think I'm going to go shower. I'll see you tomorrow at training, okay?"
Achilles didn't let himself mull over Mel's sentence for fear of losing control.
"Yes, I will see you then."
Mel watched as he stalked out of the room. Her brain was racing for a way to complete her plan. Suddenly her brain hitched in memory; the upstairs office area. She had seen it before, surely there was a phone in there.
Mel inhaled deeply to make sure Achilles was far gone before she crept out of her room. There were a few people, but nobody paid her any mind as she sped walked through the halls. She threw herself in a large room full of computers, landlines, and any office supplies one could imagine.
"Perfect," Mel said to herself.
She quickly gathered a few sheets of printer paper, a pen, and a landline off of the charging hook. She would bring the phone back when she was done with her business. Luckily she knew Dark Fang Packs' general number, so she wouldn't have to waste time trying to find that out.
Mel concealed the phone in the waistband of her pants, throwing her baggy shirt over it. She grimaced at the obviousness of it but decided she didn't have time to fiddle away.
Just as a man was coming into the room, Mel ran out almost knocking him over.
"Sorry!" She yelled over her shoulder as she ran.
She was sure the man hadn't heard her, but at least the apology made her conscious feel better.
Throwing the door open, Mel hide the phone under her comforter. She then took her time locking her door and making sure her windows were shut.
Mel muttered to herself as she grabbed the phone and other materials. She placed them on her desk and sat down with a huff.
Her fingers glided across the buttons on the phone as she put her memory to the test. It began to ring at a similar pace to Mel's heartbeat.
"DFP, this is Jax speaking. What is the purpose of this call?"
Abbreviations were common over the phone just in case a human accidentally called the line. She also happened to know that the Beta was always the one to answer the phone.
"You owe me answers, Jax," Mel said tersely.
A hitch of breath could be heard over the line. This was followed by stomping, most likely the ascending of stairs.
"Mel," Jax's breathless voice said. "You can't call here."
Mel scoffed, "Actually, I can call whoever I please, Jax."
"You don't understand!" Jax nearly shouted.
"What don't I understand Jax? Did I misunderstand you purposely angering my mate so that I would leave? Did I just see you not even trying to stop me from leaving differently than I should have?"
Mel was scathing. How dare Jax say that she didn't understand? She understood crystal clear, she wasn't wanted there.
"There are people here that want to kill you. That's what you don't understand," Jax said through gritted teeth.
"What, Jax you need-"
Jax interjected in barely a whisper, "Steele River in thirty minutes."
The line went dead. Mel nearly suffocated in the information Jax had given her. Achilles needed to know this. At this point it didn't matter how mad he would be at her for calling Jax, it was life and death now.
Mel took a deep breath and followed Achilles scent out of her room and down the stairs. She single-mindedly continued even as she realized the scent went outside. She waltzed out into the training field looking for Achilles.
Like a serpent, she weaved through the fighters still following his scent. She had finally landed her pair of lustful eyes on him when she received a lovely punch to the throat.
She watched Achilles nearly have a conniption as she fell to the ground. Mel coughed as she stood up with embarrassment flooding her veins.
"oh my goodness! Did I hurt you? I didn't mean to-"
Mel turned to the pink-hair girl.
" No, nope! I am fine. I'm great!" Mel announced to the entire training field.
It was partially true. The only injury she had actually sustained was to her pride.
Immediately Achilles was right in front of her, "Are you okay?"
Mel groaned, "No, I'm a freaking i***t. Now, I have to talk to you about something important. Like now."
Achilles sighed, "Ciarra take over."
A tall woman nodded and yelled at everybody to get back to training. They hesitantly started everything back up in full swing. Mel wasn't sure why they had all stopped in the first place, it wasn't like she was dead or something.
Achilles grabbed Mel's hand and led her out of the training grounds as fast as he could. Not only were people looking at her in ways he didn't like, but she had gotten the living goddess punched out of her in the first minute she had stepped foot in the place.
"You're probably mad at me, but I would let that anger go because you're about to be a lot angrier," Mel said.
Achilles took a deep breath as he slammed the door to his office, "What have you done now?"
"I called Jax because nothing about my leaving from Dark Fang seemed right to me. I was right, Jax said people were there that wanted to kill me. He wants me to meet him at Steele River in about," Mel glanced at the analog clock on the wall. "Ten minutes."
"That's a terrible idea," Achilles growled. "What if he has something panned? What if the people that want to f*****g kill you are making him do this?"
"Why do you think I'm telling you this? If I hadn't already thought of all of that I would be making my way to the river right now. Your pack can hide their scents right?"
"They can," Achilles said. "And just so know this doesn't mean I'm not furious with you still."
"Yeah, great. So then this will be easy. You and whoever you choose, surround the area I and Jax meet in to make sure it's secure. Either way, it will be fine because he'll have an idea you're there if it really is just him and I'll be safe it isn't."
Achilles looked at the woman in front of him adoringly, "Thank you for trusting me. Even though you should have come to me first."
Mel smiled at him and rolled her eyes, "Whatever. But, thank you for not making fun of me for making fool of myself in front of your whole pack."
Achilles laughed, "The day is still young my mastermind of a mate."
Mel glared at him, "Fine then I'll just go alone."
Achilles grabbed her by the waist, "And I'll cut Jax's head off for being alone with you."
"Killing is actually frowned upon in most places."
"Not if you're me."
Mel shivered because she knew he wasn't lying. She looked down at her shoes and then to the clock.
"Oh, wow, five minutes. We need to go."
"Look, Mel. I didn't mean to scare you."
Mel sighed, "I know. We'll talk about this later. We have to go."
Achilles watched his mate walk out of his office and shut the door.
"f**k," he said, slamming his fist into his desk.
Why couldn't she just understand? He would never hurt her or people that didn't deserve it. But some people did deserve it, and then, he wouldn't hold back.
Achilles didn't waste time surveying the damage to his desk but instead prepared for the meeting with Jax. He mind linked around thirty warriors and told them what was going on. Everybody was waiting by the border by the time he got there, including Mel.
"I want half of you in front of her and half behind her while we shift to get there. Make sure you are all hiding your scents. You know what to do once we get there."
"Yes Alpha," They all answered.
Mel hid behind a tree and stripped out of her clothes so that she could change back once she got to Steele River.
Achilles guarded where she hid so that nobody saw her. If they did he would surely go insane.
Once everybody was shifted and ready to go, the first heat of guards left.
Mel quickly walked out from behind the tree and looked at Achilles. She tilted her head to ask why he wasn't shifted.
Achilles shook his head, "Doesn't matter. Now get going. You have two minutes."
Mel's wolf barked and took over.
Achilles watched his mate's beautiful wolf take off like a shot. His wolf growled at him ferociously to be let out, but Achilles knew if he did, nothing good would come from it. His wolf would want to mark Mel and would not take kindly to other males being around her. He would have to do this in his human form.
"Let's move out!" Achilles shouted.
No matter how much he wanted it, his head wasn't clear as he ran. The wolves around him only made his own wolf more intense.
But as soon as his eyes landed on Mel, it was complete focus. He hid stealthily behind a pair of large trees. He could see the other guards surrounding the opening to the river. Everything was going well. Now they just needed to wait for the punk to get there.
Mel stood in the clearing waiting. She had changed quickly and was rather impatiently waiting for Jax. Her mind was stringing together thousands of ideas and stories of what he could say to her.
Mel quickly scanned her surroundings. Her body was subconsciously searching for Achilles as her mind wandered. She looked over her shoulder and there he was, peeking out behind some trees.
She flashed him a smile, but before anything else could be had he disappeared.
"Hey, Mel," Jax's voice called.
Mel's head immediately snapped to Jax's voice. He walked in large strides right up to her. His expression was unreadable, making Mel's nerves take flight inside of her.
"Jax," Mel said.
Jax took a deep breath, "I'll tell you everything I know, but you have to promise me you will not try and do anything stupid."
Mel looked down at the river and then to Jax, "I can't promise that, but I will try my best."
Jax's eyes drifted behind Mel and a smirk came over his face. He shook his head and nearly laughed.
"Achilles, you might as well come and join us. This is important for you to know too."
Mel heard some shuffling and soon Achilles was by her side. His eyes glared into Jax's skull as if to burn him alive.
"I've missed you too," Jax said, sarcastically, "Anyway, I have some explaining to do, and quickly. Yes, Mel, I chased you away. I did that so you wouldn't be found or- nobody will attack you if they know Achilles is your mate."
"Who is after her," Achilles demanded through gritted teeth.
"Terrible people," Jax said before turning to Mel. "Did your parents ever hang out with a man that was a bit shorter than Achilles, with super pale skin, and black eyes?"
Achilles growled, "Surely you can't be serious-"
His sentence stopped as he noticed Mel's eyes go blank and her body goes stiff. Achilles helped her to a sitting position as she began to mumble. Her voice raised and Achilles could finally understand her.
"Alpha Circes," she whispered in pure terror.
