Chapter 76
Once the passengers were all safely unloaded Jess slept. Not for a week but he did manage fourteen hours. When he woke he felt groggy, his eyes scratchy and his head thick. He rolled over then panicked. Ali had been beside him when he went to sleep. Now she was gone. Had something happened to her? Had he just dreamed she’d returned, mind intact? Was his mind going?
The Wanderer quickly put his mind at rest. Ali had woken several hours before and slipped from the bed without waking him. Before Jess could ask where she now was the door opened and she entered, carrying a tray full of food and drink.
“Hey sleepy-head,” she said. “You need to eat.”
Jess relaxed, the sight of Ali easing the knots in his stomach. He didn’t feel at all hungry, though.
“I’m not hungry.”
