Jess checked the time as the Wanderer dropped out of jump space near the Spindrift. He’d been away for less than four hours. He shook his head, still struggling to believe so much could change so quickly.
For him, at least. The fleet looked almost unchanged from when he’d left. They must have expected to wait days for his return, if not longer. He glanced sideways to Clay, who grimaced then smiled crookedly. Jess nodded. He couldn’t think of a better way to describe the emotions swirling within.
The Wanderer signalled that they were receiving a communication. Jess accepted it and found himself facing Captain North and a few of the most experienced captains. Zeek was also on the call. Jess decided to act as if he wasn’t.
