Episode 1: The Woman No One Knew
The grand ballroom of the Ashford Hotel glittered beneath crystal chandeliers, bathed in golden light and overflowing with the most influential people in the city.
Tonight marked the tenth anniversary of the Ashford Group.
And everyone who mattered was there.
Champagne glasses clinked together. Soft music drifted through the air. Men in tailored suits and women in designer gowns moved gracefully across the marble floor.
At the center of it all stood one man.
Damian Ashford.
Tall, broad-shouldered, and devastatingly handsome, he wore a black suit that fit him perfectly. His sharp features and cold, unreadable expression made him look more like a king than a businessman.
The moment he entered a room, every eye followed him.
"He looks even more handsome than in the magazines."
"I heard he's worth billions."
"He's thirty-one and still unmarried."
"What kind of woman do you think he'll marry one day?"
The women nearby sighed dreamily.
Standing beside a marble pillar, Amelia Hart nearly laughed.
Unmarried?
If only they knew.
The man they admired so much had been married for three years.
To her.
Yet not a single person in this ballroom knew she was Mrs. Amelia Ashford.
She took a sip of champagne, the bitter taste lingering on her tongue.
A wife hidden from the world.
A wife who couldn't even stand beside her husband in public.
A wife who existed only behind closed doors.
The title suddenly felt ridiculous.
"Miss Hart."
Amelia looked up.
One of the company's directors smiled warmly at her.
"You're standing here all alone. Aren't you enjoying the party?"
She smiled politely.
"I prefer quiet places."
The man chuckled.
"Mr. Ashford really depends on you, doesn't he? I always see you by his side at work."
Her fingers tightened around the champagne glass.
By his side?
No.
Only in the office.
Only in private.
Never in public.
Never where it mattered.
"He trusts you a lot," the director continued.
Amelia forced another smile.
If only he knew.
Damian trusted her enough to share his bed.
But not enough to acknowledge her existence.
The thought made her chest ache.
After the director walked away, she glanced toward the center of the ballroom.
Damian was speaking to several investors.
Even from a distance, he looked untouchable.
Powerful.
Perfect.
And impossibly far away.
Three years ago, she had never imagined her life would become like this.
Three years ago…
She had been standing in another room.
Wearing a white wedding dress.
Waiting to marry a man she barely knew.
----
"Are you sure about this?"
Her grandfather looked at her with concern.
Amelia lowered her eyes.
"If this marriage will save the Hart Group, then yes."
The old man sighed.
"You don't have to sacrifice yourself."
"It isn't a sacrifice."
But it had been.
Everyone knew the Hart Group was facing a crisis back then.
A rival company had launched a hostile takeover.
Investors were withdrawing.
Banks refused to help.
The company her father had built was collapsing.
Then Damian's grandfather had proposed a solution.
A marriage.
The Ashfords would save the Hart Group.
In return, Amelia would marry Damian.
A business arrangement.
Nothing more.
She remembered meeting Damian for the first time.
He had entered the room wearing a black suit, his expression cold and indifferent.
He hadn't looked happy.
In fact, he had looked annoyed.
"Do you agree with this marriage?" his grandfather had asked.
Damian had looked at her.
His dark eyes held no warmth.
No interest.
No affection.
After a long silence, he had said one word.
"Fine."
That had been the beginning of their marriage.
No proposal.
No romance.
No love.
Just an agreement.
Yet somewhere along the way, she had fallen in love with him.
It had happened slowly.
A little at a time.
She fell in love with the man who worked late every night.
The man who secretly paid for his employees' medical expenses.
The man who looked cold but quietly took care of the people he considered his own.
Unfortunately…
She was never one of those people.
"Miss Hart?"
Amelia blinked.
A waiter stood beside her.
"Would you like another drink?"
She shook her head.
"No, thank you."
The waiter bowed and left.
She looked at the time on her phone.
Ten o'clock.
Their anniversary would end in two hours.
Three years of marriage.
And Damian hadn't spoken to her once tonight.
Her heart ached.
She had known what kind of marriage this was.
She had known he didn't love her.
Yet every year, she couldn't stop herself from hoping.
Maybe this anniversary would be different.
Maybe tonight he would finally introduce her as his wife.
Maybe tonight he would look at her the way a husband should.
How foolish.
A burst of laughter interrupted her thoughts.
Then murmurs spread throughout the ballroom.
"Who is that?"
"She just came back from Paris."
"Isn't that Sophia Bennett?"
The name froze Amelia in place.
Slowly, she looked toward the entrance.
A beautiful woman in a red dress walked inside.
Her long hair framed a face that seemed made for magazine covers.
Sophia Bennett.
Damian's first love.
The woman everyone believed he would eventually marry.
Even Amelia had heard of her.
She had heard the stories.
How Damian had loved her.
How they had dated for years.
How their relationship ended because Sophia wanted to pursue her dreams overseas.
Some people even said Damian had never gotten over her.
Amelia had never believed the rumors.
Until now.
Because the moment Sophia entered the ballroom…
Damian looked up.
And smiled.
A real smile.
Warm.
Genuine.
The kind of smile he had never given Amelia.
Something inside her cracked.
She watched Sophia walk toward him.
"Damian."
Her voice was soft and familiar.
"It's been a long time."
Damian stared at her for several seconds.
Then he nodded.
"Welcome back."
There was warmth in his voice.
A warmth Amelia had longed to hear for years.
Her chest tightened painfully.
Suddenly, she felt like an outsider.
As though she didn't belong here.
As though she didn't belong in his life.
The whispers around her continued.
"They're perfect together."
"I knew she'd come back."
"Maybe Mr. Ashford will finally get married."
Married.
Amelia almost laughed.
How ironic.
The man they wanted to see married already had a wife.
A wife no one remembered.
A wife no one could see.
A wife no one would ever choose.
Her eyes burned.
She lowered her gaze before anyone could notice.
At that moment, a waiter approached her.
"Miss Hart."
She looked up.
"Mr. Ashford asked me to give this to you."
He handed her a small velvet box.
Her heart skipped.
A gift?
For a moment, hope bloomed inside her.
Perhaps he had remembered.
Perhaps she had been wrong.
Slowly, she opened the box.
A diamond necklace lay inside.
Beautiful.
Expensive.
And completely impersonal.
No card.
No message.
Nothing.
Just a necklace.
A gift that could have been purchased by an assistant.
Her hands trembled.
Three years.
And this was all she received.
A piece of jewelry.
A reminder that he could buy her anything…
Except love.
Tears burned behind her eyes.
Across the room, Damian glanced in her direction.
Their eyes met.
For one brief moment.
Then Sophia touched his arm and said something.
He immediately looked away.
Amelia's heart shattered.
She suddenly remembered their wedding night.
He had stood by the window, loosening his tie.
Then he had turned to her.
"I can give you my name, money, status, and protection."
"But don't expect love from me."
At the time, she had smiled and said it didn't matter.
She had believed love could be earned.
She had believed people could change.
Three years later…
She realized how wrong she had been.
Love could not be forced.
And Damian Ashford would never love her.
Not when his heart had belonged to someone else all along.
A strange calm settled over her.
Then she reached into her purse.
Her fingers touched a white envelope.
She had carried it with her for weeks.
Unable to make a decision.
Unable to let go.
But tonight…
Tonight, she finally understood.
She was tired.
Tired of waiting.
Tired of hoping.
Tired of loving a man who would never love her back.
She took a deep breath.
Then she started walking.
One step.
Then another.
The crowd parted as she approached Damian.
He frowned when he saw her.
"What is it?"
His tone was cold.
Professional.
As if she were simply his employee.
Amelia looked into his eyes.
The eyes she had fallen in love with.
The eyes that had never looked at her with affection.
She handed him the envelope.
"What is this?"
"Open it."
He looked at her for a moment before taking it.
The moment he saw the document inside, his expression changed.
At the top of the page were two words.
DIVORCE AGREEMENT.
Silence.
The air around them seemed to freeze.
Damian slowly raised his eyes.
"What is the meaning of this?"
Amelia smiled.
A sad, tired smile.
"It means I want a divorce."
His brows furrowed.
"Are you joking?"
"No."
"You want to divorce me?"
"Yes."
The word was soft.
Yet it seemed to echo through the room.
For a long moment, Damian simply stared at her.
As if he couldn't understand what she had said.
Then his expression darkened.
"Why?"
Amelia looked at him quietly.
Because I love you.
Because you don't love me.
Because I can't keep doing this.
But she didn't say any of those things.
Instead, she whispered,
"I'm tired."
He frowned.
"Tired of what?"
She swallowed the lump in her throat.
"Tired of being your secret."
The words struck him into silence.
"Tired of pretending I don't exist."
"Tired of waiting for something that will never happen."
Her eyes grew red.
"And most of all… tired of loving you alone."
For the first time, Damian couldn't speak.
Even Sophia looked shocked.
Amelia took a shaky breath.
"Happy anniversary, Mr. Ashford."
The formal title sounded strange.
Distant.
As though she had already become a stranger.
She turned around.
"Amelia."
She stopped.
It was the first time he had called her name tonight.
But she didn't turn back.
"You can't decide this on your own."
A bitter smile touched her lips.
"I already have."
She continued walking.
"Stop."
This time, his voice was colder.
Sharper.
More dangerous.
Slowly, she turned.
Damian was staring at her.
His expression was unreadable.
Yet something in his eyes had changed.
Something dark.
Something she couldn't understand.
"You want to leave me?"
"Yes."
His jaw tightened.
"No."
The answer stunned her.
"What?"
"I said no."
A long silence passed.
Then he repeated,
"I won't agree to a divorce."
Her heart trembled.
For a second…
Just a second…
Hope returned.
But then she remembered Sophia standing beside him.
Remembered his smile.
Remembered three years of loneliness.
"No matter what you want," she said softly, "I'm leaving."
Then she walked away.
This time, she didn't stop.
She didn't look back.
And for the first time in three years…
Damian watched his wife walk away from him.
A strange feeling settled in his chest.
Heavy.
Uncomfortable.
Almost like…
Fear.
He looked down at the divorce papers in his hand.
Then back at her retreating figure.
And suddenly…
For the first time in his life—
Damian Ashford didn't know what to do.
