I don't get angry. Angry is messy. Angry is loud. Angry is not perfect. And Sterling girls are perfect. That was what my mother said while she zipped up my dress that morning. "Smile, Ava. Today matters." Today did matter. Scholarship interview. Final presentation. Perfect day. Until I froze my entire classroom. --- It started with my hands. I was standing in front of Senior Class, talking about climate change of all things. My slides were behind me. My voice was steady. Then Mr. Henderson interrupted. "Ava, you're shaking. Are you nervous?" I wasn't nervous. I was burning cold. My fingers went numb. Then white. Not pale white - ice white. "Ava?" I tried to speak. Frost came out of my mouth. In Lagos heat. The first row gasped. The water bottle on my desk cracked. The water inside turned solid in one second. Then the windows frosted over. All of them. In 38-degree heat. Someone screamed. I looked down. Ice was crawling from my feet across the floor. Fast. Beautiful. Terrifying. It covered desks. Chairs. It sealed the door shut. The entire class was inside a snow globe I made. "What's happening to her!" someone shouted. I tried to stop it. I really did. But the more I panicked, the more it grew. My perfect dress was covered in frost. And then the lights exploded. Not from ice. From heat. The back window burst open, and a boy jumped through it. He was not in uniform. Hoodie, burned sleeves, amber eyes. He was the only thing in the room not freezing. In fact, steam was rising off him. He looked at me, at the ice, and said, "s**t. You're early." I said, "Who are you?" He walked straight through my ice like it was nothing. Where his feet touched, ice melted. He grabbed my wrist. His hand was on fire. Literally warm enough to burn. But it didn't burn me. It felt... right. The ice stopped spreading. "You need to breathe, Ice Girl," he whispered. "You're going to bring them here." "Them?" My teeth chattered. He leaned close. I could smell smoke and iron. "The Ashen. They can smell unsealed Ice from miles away." As if on cue, the frosted windows went dark. Something scratched on the glass. From the outside. Third floor. SCRAPE. SCRAPE. The whole class was silent, watching us. The boy looked at the door I had frozen shut. He lifted his other hand. Flame. Real flame, dancing on his palm. My ice and his fire in the same room. "What are you?" I whispered. He smiled, sad and angry at once. "I'm the only one who can keep you from killing everyone here. And you're the only one who can keep me warm." He put his flaming hand against my frozen door. Steam exploded. So thick, so loud, the fire alarm finally screamed. The door blew open. "Run," he said to the class. "Now." They ran. They left me there with him. He still held my wrist. His fire was melting my ice. And for the first time in 18 years, I wasn't cold. "I'm Kael," he said. "And your grandmother was supposed to tell you about this before you manifested. She didn't, did she?" My grandmother died when I was five. How did he know her? Outside, the scratching got louder. The windows started to crack. Kael pulled me toward the broken window. "We have to go. Now. Before they find your house next." I should have screamed. I should have called my mother. Instead, I jumped out of the third-floor window with a boy made of fire. And I didn't fall. Ice shot from my feet, making a slide all the way to the ground. We landed together. Behind us, my perfect classroom was a block of ice and steam.
