Chapter One: The Girl Nobody Chose
Amera knew something was off before Daniel even said a word.
It started with how quiet he was in the car.
Usually, he would complain about traffic or talk about something random he saw online. But today, he barely said anything. His eyes stayed on the road, and whenever Amera tried to start a conversation, his replies were short.
“Are you okay?” she asked after a while.
“I’m fine,” he said.
Just fine.
Amera nodded and looked out the window. She didn’t push. She had learned not to.
When they got to the venue, the place was already full. Cars lined the street, and music floated through the air from inside. People stood outside in groups, laughing, taking pictures, and showing off outfits.
Amera adjusted her dress before stepping out of the car.
It wasn’t anything special. Just a simple wine-colored dress she had worn once before. She had ironed it carefully and even tried a new hairstyle she saw online. For a moment, before leaving her hostel, she had actually felt good about herself.
Now, standing outside the event, she wasn’t so sure.
Daniel came around to her side, but instead of reaching for her hand like he usually did, he just walked ahead.
Amera hesitated for a second, then followed him.
“Daniel,” she called softly.
He slowed down a bit but didn’t stop. “Yeah?”
“You’re walking too fast.”
“Oh.” He glanced back briefly. “Sorry.”
But he didn’t really slow down.
Amera adjusted her pace to match his and stayed close behind him as they walked in.
The place looked even nicer inside. Lights were strung across the ceiling, casting a warm glow over everything. Music played from large speakers, and people were already dancing. The smell of food mixed with perfume and cologne.
Amera took it all in quietly.
Daniel, on the other hand, seemed different.
The moment they stepped in, his posture changed. He straightened up, his face more alert now. His eyes moved across the room like he was searching for someone.
And then he found her.
Amera followed his gaze and saw Vanessa.
Of course.
Vanessa stood near the center of the room, surrounded by a small group of people. She wore a fitted silver dress that hugged her body perfectly. Her hair was styled neatly, and she looked like she belonged exactly where she was.
People always seemed to move around Vanessa, like she was the center of attention without even trying.
Amera looked back at Daniel.
He was still staring.
“Daniel,” she said again.
This time, he blinked and looked at her, like he had forgotten she was there.
“Hmm?”
“Nothing,” Amera said quickly.
She didn’t even know why she called him.
Daniel cleared his throat. “I’ll just… greet some people.”
Before she could respond, he was already walking away.
Amera stood there for a few seconds, unsure of what to do. Then she moved to the side, finding a quieter spot near the wall.
She told herself it was fine.
It always started like this.
She watched as Daniel joined a group of his friends. They greeted him loudly, pulling him into their circle. Someone handed him a drink. He laughed at something one of them said.
Amera stayed where she was.
She could have gone over. She was his girlfriend, after all.
But something held her back.
She knew how it would go.
They would greet her politely, maybe even smile. Then the conversation would shift slightly. Not enough to be obvious, but enough for her to feel like she didn’t quite fit in.
She had felt it too many times to ignore it now.
So she stayed where she was.
A few minutes later, she walked over to the refreshment table and picked up a drink. She didn’t even know what it was. She just needed something to hold.
As she turned back, her eyes went straight to Daniel again.
He was still with his friends.
But now Vanessa was there too.
Amera paused.
Vanessa said something, and the group laughed. Daniel laughed too. Not the small, controlled smile he gave Amera sometimes, but a full laugh. The kind that made his shoulders relax.
The kind Amera hadn’t seen in a while.
Something tightened in her chest.
She looked away quickly.
“It’s nothing,” she muttered to herself.
She took a sip of her drink, even though it tasted strange.
It’s nothing.
But when she looked back again, Daniel and Vanessa were standing closer now.
Too close.
Amera swallowed.
She forced herself to walk over.
Each step felt heavier than it should.
When she got there, no one noticed her at first.
They were all focused on Vanessa.
“…I’m telling you, that lecturer is actually serious,” someone was saying.
Vanessa rolled her eyes playfully. “Please, he just likes to stress people.”
Daniel smiled at her. “Or maybe you just don’t like being stressed.”
Vanessa laughed. “I don’t.”
Amera stood there, holding her cup, waiting.
Finally, one of the guys noticed her.
“Oh, Amera. You’re here.”
She smiled slightly. “Yeah.”
Daniel glanced at her. “Hey.”
Hey.
Not “come here.”
Not “this is my girlfriend.”
Just hey.
Amera nodded. “Hi.”
No one really spoke to her after that. The conversation continued around her, flowing easily, like she wasn’t part of it.
She stood there for a while, listening, smiling when it felt necessary, even though no one was really talking to her.
At some point, Daniel shifted slightly, turning his body more toward Vanessa.
It was a small movement.
But Amera felt it.
That was when she knew.
Not fully. Not completely.
But enough.
She didn’t belong there.
Not in that circle.
Not in that moment.
Maybe… not even with him.
Amera stepped back quietly.
No one noticed.
She turned and walked away, back to the edge of the room.
This time, she didn’t try to go back.
She found a seat and sat down, placing her drink on the table beside her.
Her hands felt cold.
She watched the room from a distance.
People were laughing, dancing, and taking pictures. Everything looked so easy for them.
Like they didn’t have to think about where they stood or who they belonged to.
Amera rested her hands in her lap.
She didn’t cry.
She wouldn’t cry here.
Instead, she just sat there, watching.
After a while, she saw Daniel again.
He was walking toward her.
For a moment, something in her lifted.
Maybe he had noticed.
Maybe he had realized she wasn’t there.
Maybe—
“Amera,” he said when he got close.
“Yeah?”
“I’m stepping out for a bit.”
“Oh.”
She nodded. “Okay.”
He hesitated for a second, then added, “I won’t be long.”
Amera forced a small smile. “That’s fine.”
He nodded and turned to leave.
As he walked away, Amera’s eyes followed him.
She didn’t mean to.
But she did.
And then she saw it.
Vanessa was already heading toward the exit too.
She reached the door just as Daniel did.
They didn’t walk side by side immediately.
But they didn’t walk apart either.
It was that space again.
That almost closeness.
Amera stared.
Something in her chest dropped, slow and heavy.
She didn’t need to hear anything.
She didn’t need confirmation.
For the first time that night, she stopped trying to explain it away.
She stopped telling herself it was nothing.
Because it wasn’t.
Amera looked down at her hands.
Then back at the door they had just walked through.
And in that quiet moment, sitting alone in a room full of people, a thought settled in her mind.
Not loud.
Not dramatic.
Just clear.
Something was already ending.
