Sara took out her timetable and saw Biology next. She also noticed Salvanius', Notoria's and Lucida's empty seats. Sara smiled to herself. It looked like Salvanius was not back from detention. Just then Sara's Biology teacher, Miss Washington, entered.
In Sara's opinion, she looked like a pixie compared to Miss Pennyfeather, who had a tall, thin structure. Miss Washington had messy brown hair and twinkling, cheerful, blue eyes. Many-a-times her clothes were covered in earth, although, wearing gloves when she worked with plants, her hands were clean. Sara had always liked her classes and her frank manner. However, once Salvanius called her A dog rolled in smelly mud, and that was when Sara had lost it. She taught Salvanius a lesson for her life and fortunately, there was no teacher to witness it. There was also a bruise on Salvanius' head as a reminder of that incident.
"Good morning." Miss Washington called out.
"Good morning ma'am." chorused the class.
"So," Miss Washington began but was interrupted by a knock on the door.
"Come in!" she called.
In came Salvanius, Notoria and Lucida, standing by the door sheepishly.
"Good gracious! What took you so long?" cried Miss Washington, "it's 5 minutes since the class started."
"We - er-were in... circumstances such that- er- that is-"
"They were in detention ma'am" Violet chimed in.
"Thank you, Miss Lair" snapped Miss Washington; it was a common knowledge she did not like being interrupted. Then to the Salvanius, "Very well, you may take your seat."
"Thank you, ma'am." Salvanius gritted through her teeth, then she glanced at Sara and scowled before taking her seat.
"So as I was saying," she continued, like there was no interruption in the first place, "let's try and guess the new chapter we're about to start. But, it requires a follow-up question." Miss Washington had an interesting way of teaching in the way of a story by adding mystery and humour to the chapter. It was one of the reasons she was Sara's favourite teacher. "What do you mean by the word 'photo'?"
"Pictures, duh," remarked Salvanius from her seat. Notoria and Lucida sniggered.
However, Miss Washington did not find it funny. She looked at her sharply and said, "It is bad enough being late for class.", which silenced the three of them.
Sara raised her hand. Miss Washington's eyes darted across her and she smiled, "Ah yes, Miss Wenz?"
" 'Photo' means light," said Sara, "and as for the chapter, we are starting Chapter 4- Life of Plants, which has the process of photosynthesis."
"Very good, very good," said Miss Washington appreciatively, "you may sit down. As Miss Wenz rightly said we'll be starting-"
Another knock on the door made Miss Washinton look exhausted and annoyed. She gave a sweeping look of the class as if checking there were any more students who might have been off for detention and were missing presently. Then she called out for the second time, "Come in!"
A gasp nearly escaped Sara's mouth as the least expected person opened the door- their principal, Miss Pince. Then she actually gasped when Miss Pince called her and beckoned her to come along. From the corner of her eye, Sara could see Salvanius smirking. Her heart paced faster and faster as they approached the office. Her fear turned into confusion, however, when Miss Pince knocked on her own door. "Come in!" a voice called out which, Sara was sure belonged to a boy.
Her deduction turned out to be pretty accurate, as they confronted a boy who, to Sara's utmost surprise, was wearing the same uniform the girl was wearing that morning. But her heart lightened considerably. She was expecting something worse, like a complaint or getting expelled for her unpunctuality that morning. And Golden Wisdom School is definitely not a school where one gets off punishments for breaking the rules (except for a boy in Sara's class, Thomas Johnson, who came late to class late every day and never got punished). Facing a child seemed quite insignificant compared to those possibilities. However, Miss Pince seemed to have read her mind.
"Do not judge him on his size, Miss Wenz." she warned, "he may look like a 16-year-old, but he is pretty darn smart and clever and is capable of taking over a person thrice his age."
"But who is he?" Sara asked quietly, but clearly.
"I," said the boy, "am Ninja 9999."
