Maya sat in her cozy office, surrounded by the comforting scent of old books and the soft glow of afternoon sunlight. She had just finished a session with a client and was taking a moment to collect her thoughts before her next appointment.
As she gazed out the window, her mind wandered to the past, a habit she had tried to break but couldn't shake entirely. Memories of Alex still lingered, like a ghostly presence she couldn't exorcise.
Just then, her phone buzzed, breaking the spell. Maya hesitated, wondering who it could be. She didn't receive many personal calls, especially not during work hours.
She picked up the phone, and her heart skipped a beat as she saw Rachel's name on the screen. They hadn't spoken in over a year, not since their friendship had imploded in the aftermath of Maya's breakup with Alex.
Maya's mind raced as she debated whether to answer. Curiosity got the better of her, and she took a deep breath before swiping to accept the call.
"Hey, Maya," Rachel said, her voice tentative. "It's been a long time. I know I'm the last person you expected to hear from, but I was thinking about you and wanted to reach out."
Maya's guard went up, but she tried to keep an open mind. "Rachel. It has been a while. What's going on?"
There was a pause, and for a moment, Maya wondered if the call had dropped. But then Rachel spoke up, her voice laced with a mix of emotions.
"I know I hurt you, Maya. I was blind to what was happening, and I'm so sorry. I want to make amends, if you'll let me."
Maya's defenses began to crumble, just a little. She hadn't expected Rachel to acknowledge her role in the pain Maya had endured.
"I appreciate your apology, Rachel," Maya said cautiously. "But I need some time to process. Can we talk more about this in person?"
Rachel agreed, and they made plans to meet at a coffee shop the following week.
As Maya hung up the phone, she felt a mix of emotions swirling inside her. She wasn't sure if she was ready to face Rachel, or the past they shared. But a small part of her was curious, wondering if they could find a way to heal and move forward together.
