chapter 2: A Painful Reminder

Maya arrived at the coffee shop early, her nerves fluttering like a hummingbird's wings. She hadn't seen Rachel in over a year, and the thought of confronting their past made her stomach twist into knots.

Rachel arrived shortly after, her eyes apologetic and sincere. They hugged awkwardly, the tension between them palpable.

As they sat down, Maya took a deep breath and began to speak, her words spilling out like a dam breaking. "Rachel, I appreciate your apology, but I need to know why you're really here. What changed your mind?"

Rachel's eyes dropped, her voice barely above a whisper. "I realized I was complicit in Alex's behavior. I ignored the signs, and I'm so sorry. I want to make amends, Maya."

Maya's eyes prickled with tears as she listened, her heart slowly opening up to Rachel's words.

Just as it seemed like they were making progress, a loud crash echoed through the coffee shop, followed by raised voices. Maya's head jerked up, her heart racing as she saw a couple arguing in the corner, their body language aggressive and familiar.

Suddenly, she was transported back to a night she thought she'd left behind, a night when Alex's anger had turned violent, and she'd cowered in fear.

Maya's breath quickened, her mind reeling as the memories came flooding back. She felt like she was reliving the trauma all over again.

Rachel's voice snapped her back to the present, her eyes filled with concern. "Maya, are you okay? You look like you've seen a ghost."

Maya's voice trembled as she spoke, her eyes fixed on the arguing couple. "It's just...it's like I'm reliving it all over again."

Rachel's expression softened, her hand reaching out to touch Maya's arm. "I'm so sorry, Maya. I had no idea. We can leave, if you want."

Maya nodded, her eyes welling up with tears as she let Rachel guide her out of the coffee shop, away from the painful reminder of her past.
