Chapter 1: The Eclipse
The day had finally arrived. Valen stood in front of his small village’s shrine, his heart pounding against his chest as the elders gathered around him. He had prepared his whole life for this moment—the warrior trials, the ceremony that would determine his future. His father’s mark, a brilliant blue star etched into his wrist, had shone brightly throughout his life, signaling strength and leadership. Valen had always expected his own mark would be no different. The village square was buzzing with anticipation. Families, neighbors, and friends all gathered around, their Celestial Marks glowing faintly under their cloaks. Each mark was unique, a symbol of the life the stars had assigned to them at birth. Some bore the marks of wealth, others of knowledge, a few of love and heartbreak. It was an unspoken truth that no one could escape their mark, for it was the stars' will. Valen, however, couldn't shake the sense of dread creeping up his spine. The elders motioned for him to step forward. He took a deep breath, trying to still his nerves. It was tradition that every young man and woman receive their adult mark on the night of their warrior trial. His hands clenched into fists as he knelt before the shrine, the stone cold beneath his knees. The head elder approached, holding a small ceremonial knife in hand. “Valen, son of the great warrior Solas, today you shall receive your mark, as written by the stars.” The elder’s voice was calm, but Valen noticed the old man’s eyes flicker briefly to the sky, where the sun had begun its slow descent. Today was no ordinary day. The Eclipse was coming. Valen could feel it in the air, the tension building with each passing minute. The elder cut a small incision into Valen’s forearm, letting a single drop of blood fall onto the stone altar. He held his breath as the others began chanting in the ancient language, their voices rising with the wind. The sky darkened as the sun disappeared behind the moon, casting the village in an eerie twilight. For a moment, everything stood still. Valen’s eyes were fixed on his arm, waiting for the familiar glow of his mark to appear. The other boys before him had received theirs within seconds. But as the chanting continued, his skin remained bare. Panic gripped him. The elder’s chanting faltered, his brows furrowing in confusion. “It should have appeared by now,” he muttered, stepping closer to inspect Valen’s arm. The villagers began to whisper among themselves, eyes wide with fear. The Eclipse continued to darken the sky, plunging the square into near-total darkness. Valen’s heart raced. He could feel the weight of every gaze upon him, the judgment, the fear. What was happening? Why hadn’t his mark appeared? He wasn’t just any boy; he was the son of Solas. His mark should be radiant—bold and powerful, just like his father’s. The chanting ceased entirely, replaced by an uncomfortable silence. The elder straightened, his face pale. “Valen… there is no mark.” Valen blinked, the words barely registering. “What do you mean?” “No mark,” the elder repeated, his voice laced with unease. “The stars have not given you one.” The crowd erupted in gasps and murmurs. Valen stared at his bare arm in disbelief, his stomach churning. This was impossible. Every person in Elysia had a mark. It was the foundation of their existence. To be without one was… unheard of. “Is it because of the Eclipse?” someone in the crowd called out. “The stars are hidden!” “No,” the elder said, shaking his head. “The marks come from the stars, whether they are visible or not.” Valen stumbled back, feeling the weight of the elder’s words crush him. He had no mark. No fate. No future. Without a word, he turned and ran, the whispers and stares of the crowd fading behind him. He didn’t know where he was going, only that he needed to escape. The village, his father’s expectations, the weight of the unknown—it all pressed down on him like a suffocating blanket. The world was still dark, the Eclipse in full force above. The sun’s corona glowed faintly around the edges of the moon, casting a surreal glow on the landscape. Valen ran into the forest, the trees a blur around him. His breath came in ragged gasps as his mind raced. He had no mark. What did that mean? Had the stars forsaken him? Was he now an outcast, someone without a place in the world? As he stumbled deeper into the woods, he collapsed by a small creek, his chest heaving with exhaustion. He stared at his reflection in the water, searching his face for answers. But all he saw was a young man lost in the shadow of an eclipse, with no path ahead of him. Just then, a soft voice broke through the silence. “You aren’t the only one.” Valen spun around, his heart leaping into his throat. Standing a few feet away was a woman, cloaked in deep indigo, her face partially obscured by the shadows. Her eyes, however, gleamed with an intense, knowing light. “What… what do you mean?” Valen stammered, still catching his breath. The woman stepped forward, her cloak rustling softly in the breeze. “There are others like you. Others who bear no mark.” Valen’s eyes widened. “Who are you?” She smiled faintly, her lips curling into a secretive grin. “Someone who understands what it means to defy fate.” Valen’s mind raced, questions swirling in his head. Who was this mysterious woman? And how did she know about his mark—or lack thereof? Before he could ask, the woman extended her hand. “If you wish to know the truth, come with me. Your journey is just beginning.”
